>> ♪ >> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> tonight at 6 o'clock the springfield mall evacuated as shoppers search for their last minute items on super saturday. what caused the disruption in the middle of the rush. first though storm scan3 shows where the rain is keeping things damp all over the region but what about christmas eve? could we see a white christmas? that's the question. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thank up so much for join, us. it's been a wet saturday across our area today. keeping things cold and a bit dreary but there may be something else headed our way just in time for santa. let's get right over to

meteorologist lauren casey tracking the system that might bring snowflakes, right, lauren. >> that is true. yeah, we could see a couple flakes on christmas. it's going to be a tougher bet to get a white christmas. that means we would have to have an inch of snowfall on the ground. check out some of these temperatures. felt damp today but these temperatures are unseasonably mild. we're at 60 degrees in philadelphia, upper 50's in atlantic city, 61 in wilmington, 62 in dover but just up wind a cold front is dropping through the delaware valley, chillier temperatures to the north and west, upper 40's in allentown and that cold front is providing the lift for this shower activity. another round after all that rain this morning of some fast moving showers moving across the area very quickly from west to east so tough ride right now on the schuylkill expressway heading out of center city. all the way stretching back into chester county and be montgomery county seeing moderate to even heavy rainfall right now. and don't be surprised if you hear a few rumble of thunder. fast moving showers over the next several hours.

temperatures in the middle 50's. still a bit breezy and temperatures tumble as we head into the overnight period but looking good for your travel plans for tomorrow. cooler and quiet, clouds but things get a little diceyer with that rain wintry mix and snow chance for sunday night and where we could see some accumulation and a couple flakes possible for christmas morning and turning to sunshine and wind and we're getting cold and we are going to stay cold into next week. i'll let you know when to expect high temperatures in the 20's coming up. >> oh, boy, thank you so much lauren. appreciate that. an investigation meantime is under way at the springfield mall in delaware county was evacuated this afternoon. we're told it was sparked by an incident in the food court area. "eyewitness news" reporter alycia knee nieves is live at te food court. >> reporter: we're told this was not a major incident by any means and no one was hurt but there was an evacuation at this mall at the height of the shopping experience here and on the second busiest shopping day of the year. now, here's what we're told

happened here at the busy as you can tell springfield mall. around 3:30 in the afternoon the mall was evacuated as i mentioned and that was prompted by dark black smoke that was seen in a section of the mall as you mentioned in the food court section of the mall. firefighters say the smoke was in fact coming from the sbarro pizza shop caused by a grease incident in the kitchen. according to firefighters there were not any actual flames in the sbarro when they arrived but just a lot of smoke from the grease so as a precautionary measure the mall was evacuated and it was so for a brief period of time we're told for about an hour and then people were let back in to continue with their last minute christmas shopping. again, no one was hurt in this incident earlier today that prompted an evacuation. likely the most stressful part of this whole thing for the last minute shoppers was the worry they would not be able to get back into the mall but as you can tell they have been let back in and shopping is going strong here at the springfield mall. reporting live in delaware

"eyewitness news" reporter anita oh spoke with shoppers who say super saturday really is the way to go. >> there was no traffic. yesterday was mobbed. >> reporter: shoppers in camden county got an early start. >> 5 o'clock. >> reporter: trying to beat the last minute holiday rush on super saturday. >> i got a pandora for my mom, you know, 'cause she deserve it. >> reporter: lisa perkins got to the cherry hill mall by opening time, 7:00 a.m. as part of a special holiday hours. >> just to beat the rush, you know, just to pick up the last minute stuff. >> reporter: and yes, they admit. >> last minute. >> reporter: but tyler driver originally from haddon heights says he has a good reason. >> i live in chicago so it's tax there, 10 and a half percent. >> reporter: yeah. >> saving money. >> reporter: okay. >> cherry hill. >> reporter: and they're not alone. more than half of all consumers plan to finish their

shopping today on super saturday according to the national retail federation. for joanne weber vice president of human resources at a company in philadelphia this is was the last stop to buy gifts for 12 people. >> i needed to get some things for the great people that work for me. they were last on my list but first in my heartsism cherry hill, anita oh, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> well, courses of travelers are avoiding the roads this weekend altogether. "eyewitness news" was at philadelphia international airport earlier today. things were just starting to pick up at the security check in. meanwhile eager family members shared hugging in the arrivals section. one traveler who was flying home to california told us the airport was surprisingly quiet today. >> well, it's my first time going back to my girlfriend so it will be really great. we were surprised and we thought the airport would be crazy and it's been pleasantly surprising. i mean looking over at security it looks like there's not going to be a big deal. >> well, air travel is up in our area.

some 80,000 people will be flying out of our region at the end of this holiday season. the philadelphia water department is working tonight very hard to try to fix a water main break in northern liberties. a 12-inch main broke about 10:30 this morning on the 100 block of west girard avenue. the intersection was shut down while crews worked to remove excess water. officials say several properties lost water while others took water in their basements. >> 10 properties without water. i believe there's approximately eight with water in the cellar. our crews are pumping that water out to get an assessment of what's going on in their basements. >> some of those properties which are businesses should be back opened sometime tonight. the fire department was assist wind gust two dogs who were displaced by this water main break. still ahead on "eyewitness news" tonight, more fallout now for the miss america leadership who resigned today following the discovery of offensive e-mails criticizing contestants and leaked to the media earlier

>> ♪ >> welcome back everyone. the top leaders of the atlantic city based miss america organization have resigned now after e-mails they exchanged criticizing past pageant winners were leaked to the media. ceo sam haskell seen here resigned today along with president josh randle and chairman lynn weidner. the outgoing president also apologized today to the 2013 miss america winner whose weight he ridiculed in an e-mail exchange with pageant officials. a slew of disparaging e-mails were linked to the huffington post which first reported this on thursday. all right. lc. >> all right.

>> want to check in here with you about christmas. what's happening? >> things are going to change. a mild and soggy day today. we're going get cold, and stay cold as we head into 2018 but right now some temperatures near 60 degrees. >> okay, we'll savor the moment. >> we'll have it for like another hour or two. so soak it all in. >> that's it? >> our high temperature today in philadelphia 60 degrees. well beyond our normal high temperature at 43 and we're still hanging onto 60 right now in philadelphia. 61 in wilmington. but colder air off to the north and west with a cold front that's making its way through the delaware valley as we speak. some colder air on the backside and then bitter air as we look up towards the upper midwest. it will be knocking on our door as we head into next week. but overnight tonight showers coming to an end early. less wind. 38 degrees. so we get much colder throughout the overnight period on the backside of that cold front. cooler tomorrow but right around average for us. partly sunny conditions, 44 degrees so really great for all the holiday chores you

need to get wrapped up on your christmas eve. getting a live look at center city philadelphia though some drops on the camera lens, 60 degrees, breezy as well with winds out of the southwest and it was a soggy day especially in the lehigh valley picking up .8 of a inch of rainfall in allentown, doylestown over a half inch, wilmington about a quarter and right now in philadelphia we're up to about a quarter of an inch but we haven't factored in this last round of rain. certainly a soggy day across the delaware valley. earlier that are kutztown fog lingering low clouds rain falling and we had the breezy conditions as well and now we are dealing with this secondary round of rainfall. this morning the warm front generated all that steady rain. now we are seeing this fast moving showers and in parts of delaware you could be running into a few thunderstorms that line developing out of d.c. if it continues to move eastbound could be hearing a few rumbles as we head into the second half of the evening but right now this rain spreading hack across the i-95 corridor into parts of south jersey burlington county right now getting a pretty good soaking. future weather will show us we'll contend with these

showers moving through for the next couple hours and then coming to an end by 10, 11 o'clock tonight. quiet day tomorrow, just some clouds around, some breaks of sunshine but then tomorrow night we're going to start to see some moisture building on in. looks like a mainly rain event for the shore, i-95 corridor will see a light rain transition over to a wintry mix and then we'll see snow to the far north and west so far northwestern suburbs, berks county, lehigh valley, mount pocono, and we'll see a few lingering scattered snow showers especially to the north of the city as we wake up on christmas morning that will be nice but that quickly clears out and we turn over to sunshine on our holiday. future snowfall amounts showing us really not going to pick up much. maybe a dusting in the city and west owe -- western suburbs. we have a shot at a white christmas towards the lehigh valley northampton county and the poconos where we could pick up about one to 2 inches potentially up to 4-inches in the poconos but for our monday for most of us just a passing morning snow shower, sunshine becoming very windy,

37 degrees which is going to feel colder than that. it's going to be a little chilly for santa and a little chilly for folks heading out to the birds game on christmas night. you'll have to bundle up. those wind chills will be down into the teens as we head into next week, temperatures slowly decline all the way back into the upper 20's by thursday. check out that will fun overnight low as we head out thursday morning. 12 degrees. that's going to feel awesome. >> boy, that sounds like fun. the game for you on chevy sunday kickoff that's sunday morning at 11:30 right here on cbs3. well, it is a very special christmas for a south jersey teenager. his hoop dreams are coming true t winslow township detectives on patrol say the 16-year-old elijah was playing on a weathered basketball rim and backboard. they felt it was time for a upgrade. they bought him a portable basketball hoop set as as a christmas gift. the backboard is shatter proof. elijah can just dunks the -- dunk the ball as hard as he wants. pretty cool. nice stuff there. >> thanks lesley. we appreciate that. hurricane harvey meantime devastated homes all across texas months ago and for many families the rebuilding process has been a bit slow so one little girl asked santa to get involved. she wrote to the jolly elf while at her friend's house. her family is still dealing with a hole in their roof and their father's health is failing. in her annual letter she didn't ask for toys. she asked for help.
