live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". temperatures tumbling people out and about today made sure they were bundled up as they fought the fried jet conditions. >> apparently we need to get used this cold. good afternoon rahel solomon. >> i'm joe holden. jim donovan is off this afternoon. let's get to meteorologist katie fehlinger tracking this bitter blast. katie. >> little illiteration to go along with the chill. really chilly couple of days here, and this as i mentioned just before we came to air here the fact this is actually the warmest day of the next seven and our daytime highs only expected to hit the mid 30s. made to feel that much worse just by that leftover wind.

it's not as harsh as yesterday but noticeable that's the key. let's start things off taking you outside show you view live neighborhood network and if you look closely you'll notice that there's definitely some wave action on the delaware river. palmyra cove nature park overlooking a very crystal clear skyline well off in the distance about 9 miles away the crow flies in this shot. but it's pretty clear sixty five you had a couple of clouds early this morning those have thinned out generally going see just sunshine for the rest of the day. but it does nothing to help warm you up. look how cold it colonelly feels. feels like values. these are values i want you to go back hitting the road you absolutely to be bundling adequately this is how it will feel to you regardless of the thermometer reading technically we're right around freezing currently i think we've got maybe another two or 3 degrees for daytime highs here at best. so the brisk wind is still out there. it is turning little bit more westerly with time. tonight it should ease up pretty well for us and with some

also developing now at noon philadelphia police officer opens fire on a robbery suspect striking the man in the chest. david spunt is live at the scene of the shooting in west philadelphia with the details now. david, good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, rahel. no officers injured here but we do know that a suspect in crit critical condition shot in the chest behind me is 49th and walnut. now this happened a little bit after 10:00 o'clock this morni morning. we were told a few blocks away from here at 52nd and irving somebody robbed a deli or tried to rob a deli. authorities say that that suspect got away in a black suv. authorities eventually found that suv hanging a round in the area. tried to approach the suspect. they say the suspect then took off in that suv. ended up crashing into another car behind me. that is the scene behind me. they say at that point the suspect tried to pull out what appeared to be weapon out of his waistband. that's when the officers took out a gun and fired a single

shot into the suspect's chest. take a listen to what police say about this shooting. >> this investigation is very early on. in terms of the conclusion of it in terms of whether the shoot log end up being justified or not or what have you, i will say this the officer has to protect himself and other people presenter when you're armed of knowledge of it being a gun point rob breen the person refuses command you have the duty to protect yourself and other people present. >> reporter: authorities also found out that that black suv was involved in a another robbery nearby authorities looking knee details with that part of the story but this is a residential neighborhood. jim and rahel, a lot of kids walking about a lot of people outside today. when the police officer fired a gunshot so that officer is a four year veteran place placed n administrative leave that is standard procedure. that is what we know at this point. the suspect is in critical condition. reporting live in west philadelphia, david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news". all right, david, thank you. also this afternoon let the

season of hold dave gift returns. chopper three over the cherry hill mall this morning. parking lots were beginning to fill up with cars as shoppers return unwanted gifts. the national retail federation estimates almost two-thirds of people made at least one return last christmas season and most popular day for in store returns probably guessed it but, yes, today. to avoid that before you get there make sure to couple check company return policies take your receipts and identificati identification. >> crews are working to fix broken water main that flooded the parking lot for several businesses in northeast philadelphia this morning. the rushing water there broke through sidewalk and spilled into the street on willets road between holme avenue and exeter road. it's unclear in any homes or businesses are affected. and another water main break causing traffic troubles this noon in east norriton montgomery county. the westbound lanes of the germantown pike between hill crest avenue and stanford street are closed while crews make repairs. 8-inch main broke around 4:30 this morning and is currently affecting at least two busines

businesses. crews hope to have service restored by late afternoon. high winds fanned flames that destroyed two homes and damaged three others on christmas night in slaughter beach, delaware. firefighters were called to the 300 block of bay of a just aft 7:00 o'clock last night. officials believe a propane tank may have caused the fire. at least one elderly resident was hurt when she tried to run back into a home and fell. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. suspect is in police custody for an overnight fire in north philadelphia. this happened around 2:30 this morning in the 2200 block of north eighth street. firefighters were able to get it under control in about half hour. investigators say the fire was intentionally set after a domestic dispute. nobody was hurt. president donald trump remains in florida at his mar-a-lago resort. he says it's a working holiday and he's already looking at issues he wants to tackle in the

new year. president trump sent out a christmas night tweet saying it would be back to work today to make america great again. first item on the agenda of round of golf in his florida club. white house says the president will be focusing on his 2018 agenda during his time at mirror largo. this was the president last friday before leaving for florida. >> i'll be working very hard during that christmas because we have many things we're talking about able concluding north core including a lot of things happening in the middle east. >> reporter: in addition to national security the president's 20 within eight agenda includes a trillion dollar infrastructure bill to row pair america's roads and bridges. and revisit of health care. president trump pushed congress to include repeal of the individual mandate as part of the tax reform bill. >> this is requirement that people buy insurance that they don't want and don't node. and that was one of the pillars of obamacare and we've gotten rid of that. >> reporter: the president tweeted this morning that because of the individual mandate repeal, he says democrats and republicans will

welcome back. millions of travelers heading home for the holidays dealing with flight delays and difficult road conditions. >> yup. as correspondent demarco morgan explains the travel troubles are all because of winter weather that is still affecting many parts of the country. >> i really wasn't wishing for it but we got it. [ laughter ] >> when he they wanted it or not people from washington to maine woke up to white christmas. >> i was, you know, happy with no snow and no shoveling. >> new england, snow fell in some areas at a rate of up to 5-inches per hour. heavy snow combined with strong wind gusts led to about 20,000 power outages in massachusetts.

the rapid snowfall caused dangerous conditions on the road. >> pretty much whiteout conditions. >> reporter: and in the sky. at boston logan airport one flight skidded off the runway while landing monday night. and earlier in the day blizzard conditions briefly shut down the airport and caused 240 delays. bitter cold enveloped much of the midwest. minnesota had wind chills as cold as 35 degrees below zero. out west, washington and oregon saw one to 2-inches of snow. slick roads led to dozens of crashes and delays. >> i don't want to drive any more, but i'm stuck in the middle. so i can go anywhere. >> reporter: that weather system is expected to head southeast bringing with it a mix of sleet, snow, ice and rain. demarco morgan, cbs news, newark, new jersey.

working to customers back online aft high winds that power outages on christmas day. >> at this hour they working to fix 36 outages affecting 386 customers. this was the scene in our region yesterday. toppled trees cradled by power lines. most significant wind damage was in bucks, montgomery and chest counties much at the height power estimated that peco -- peco estimated 7,000 people were without power. well historic white house tree that dates back to the 1800s on the chopping block. >> according to cn new jersey the jackson magnolia plant the during andrew jackson's presidency is scheduled to be cut down later this week. the iconic tree has been ailing for decade right now it is being supported by an extensive cable link system. the white house plans to use a sprout from the jackson magnolia to plant another tree in its place. well tonight mark the first night of kwanzaa and philadelphia will be celebrating at boat house row. >> mayor kim kenney will join city officials to light up the homes at 6:00 o'clock. tune into "eyewitness news" at

katie fehlinger with gwen stefani reference. >> commercial break. take us away. >> the last ten seconds right before we came back from the break let me blow your mine with this upcoming statistic. i'm going to show you. >> ready to go. >> wait until i show you it was just a crazy amount of snow. we just saw the package earlier from all the snow that fell during christmas holiday. erie pennsylvania out did itself in the lake effect snow area. they're used to seeing a lot of snow. but they really over achieved over the span of christmas and over the span of these last two days. let me show you the statistic. >> drum roll, please. >> little drummer boy giving us a drum roll for statewide two-day record this is across the entire state of pennsylvania. 53-inches of snow fell. that was actually granted it was too two-stretch technically but really fell over a span of just

30 hours. so airports totally shut down. just looking at the flight statuses of across portions of the entire us to give you a sense we'll get to that in a second they've shut down completely so any flights that were going to erie from philadelphia international you're not going anywhere any time soon. take look at storm scan though. that's empty here it's going stay that way for the time bei being. very tranquil conditions safe for that wind it's not as harsh as yesterday but still noticeable. still add to go that wind chill no less. but for now, we're sitting pretty sitting quietly until the next storm comes along. the next one that comes along isn't actually visible on the map yet. we have little bit of light snow breaking out through missouri and parts of kansas and some rain currently down through parts of the bayou southeastern texas but that's really it's no major storm system getting its act together just yet. we're currently at 32 degrees at the airport again i think we'll top off around 34 this afterno afternoon. but you do need to take about 1t in. for how you want to be dressing for the day.

it's currently four below zero in minneapolis i did just do quick check it actually feels like it's 19 below zero in minneapolis right now. i'm not sure. i think meisha went back home to minnesota for the holiday. that poor girl must be freezing cold right now. sending warm thoughts your way my dear. let's take look at the nationwide watches and warnings. if you are going to be traveling especially by air. these are wind chill advisories and warnings posted across a good portion of the northern high plains and i show you those values you can understand why. it's just bitterly cold to the point that it's frankly dangerous to be out there. these delays here at our airport are more for departures than they are for anything else. trying to get to other locations because of problems they're having at those hubs it's not due to weather here. i did see newark international also having some issues due to the wind in fact. there it is right there. having minor delays. no other major problems interesting san francisco is having issues because of staffing not because of weather.

but there are some delays if you're trying to head back west. meanwhile if you're headin headt on the roads today you're good. tomorrow and thursday. you need to bundle up and warm up the car before you can hit the road especially on thursday. that will end up being the coldest day of this forecast and i'll show it in the seven day. for now just expect a chill in the air but nothing compared to what's about to hit us. 34 the expected afternoon high we still have few more degrees up our sleeve. later on tonight drop down to 19. and then here it comes. another drum roll, please we take look 30 degrees tomorrow. we start this subfreezing trend as of tomorrow, through the entire seven day. so new year's eve you're going out maybe for those fireworks, you will have to bundle up substantially and adequately to be at all comfortable in this but thursday is the defendant. shot snore snow showers light snow pretty good chance on friday but light snow chance on friday. saturday a bit of question mark. stick with us. >> 14 looks real pleasant on

minnesota couple got unexpected christmas gift this year and quite the story to go with it. >> they weren't expecting their third child for another 27 days but the baby apparently had other plans. >> hannah and her husband taylor enjoying christmas with family yesterday when hannah began having contractions. they got in the car and tried to get to the hospital but the baby intervened again. they stop on the side of the road and taylor helped deliver their baby girl. >> it didn't really occur to me until i was calling 911 that this might actually not take place where it's supposed to take place. you're not doing whole love thinking just following directions and doing what you needs to be done. >> the delivery we are told went well and baby poppy and mother are both happy and healthy.
