>> yeah, i don't like it. >> reporter: lynn miller of norristown seems to feel the same about the cold weather today. not a fan of it. >> not at all. >> reporter: dip in the temperature having to bundle up and feel cold is dam evening the day for some in the reason it did some damage. early this morning the freezing temperatures led to two water main breaks, one in montgomery count a long germantown pike and another in northeast philadelphia, along willits road. both breaks causing an icy mess, and had crews out all day in the cold for repair. >> we have seen an up tic in water main breaks in the winter, early december, water temperatures drop and get through our systems. >> reporter: in the past two weeks there has been a half dozen main breaks in philadelphia including two in rittenhouse square and cities water department says that this month there have actually been more than 80 water main breaks because of the colder temperatures. >> we do know that we will see more, certainly from december to about march.

>> reporter: you heard cities water department spokesperson there saying that if this bitter blast of cold sticks around we could expect more of these water main breaks. reporting live from northeast philadelphia, leash a nieves for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". peco customers are still feeling the effects of yesterday's wicked wind, right now the company is trying to fix 21 outages that impacted 84 customers. at its peak yesterday, more than 7,000 people were without power, and peco is hoping to have most of the outages fixed by later tonight or early tomorrow morning. bundle up holiday travelers are making their way to and from 30th street station in philadelphia. this afternoon lines there pretty long as people wait todd depart the city, others wheeled those suitcases to the station eager ton home after a busy holiday weekend. meantime jet blue airways flight slid off an icy taxiway at boston's logan airport today. the plane had just arrived from savanna when it hit that

patch and started to skid. plane came to the stop in the snow between two taxiways, no one was seriously hurt. erie, pennsylvania received 53 inches of snow in 30 hours shattering record. that is a snow that began 8:00 d continued throughout christmas day. the snowfall is the largest ever two day snow total in pennsylvania. residents of erie who are snow stranger to big snow falls say the digging process is going to take sometime. there are some snow chance s in our future that could impact any travel plans you may have, during this holiday week. lauren will have her travel forecast in just about 10 minutes. a police pursuit end was an officer shooting a robbery suspect in west philadelphia this morning. police say suspect who was wanted for two robberies crashed into another car at forty-ninth and walnut. an officer shot the man in the chest after he allegedly tried to pull what appeared to be a weapon from his waist band, the officer was not injured.

>> also had to protect himself and other people present and armed with knowledge of being a gunpoint robbery and person refuses commands you do have a duty to protect yourself. >> officer involved had been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. the suspect remains in critical condition. baby girl attacked by a racoon in north philadelphia is now out of the hospital. four month-old journey black was attacked by the racoon last week in the apartment where she lives with her mother in the 2100 block of north 22nd street. journey's mother said she spot that had racoon earlier in the day before the attack and called the landlord to have it removed. our david spunt, talked with the little girl's mother and he will have more on "eyewitness news" at 6:00. chopper three is over a house fire in abington, montgomery county. this is at 401 susquehanna road this particular fire reached two alarms, but there are in reports of any injuries , and the cause remains under investigation.

fire fighters in south jersey are working to place a barn fire under control, chopper three over 100 block of bordentown owe i-georgetown road in chesterfield township burlington county. we are told that fire has been burned for about an hour no injuries have been reported. high winds fanned blames that destroyed two homes and damaged three others on christmas night in slaughter beach, delaware. fire fighters were called to the 300 block of bay avenue just after 7:00 last night, officials say a propane tank may have caused this fire. at lee one elderly resident was hurt when she tried to run back into the home and then fell, the cause remains under investigation. well, the road to the super bowl runs right here through philadelphia after the eagles clinched home field advantage last night and sports director don bellies here with the bird plans for the season final think sunday. >> it will be interesting to go see how they play it.

a lot of different ways they can go. eagles don't have much to play for this sunday against dallas and nfc east, champs. home field advantage, check. they have accomplished all of their regular sees than goals but there is still a lot of work left to do. last night they beat raiders but nick foles struggled filling in for carson wentz. he threw a touchdown, interception and only finished with 163-yard passing. so when the teams playoff fate already set will doug pederson give foles the customary rest on sunday. >> i got to get him as many re ps as we can and be smart bit. obviously we have a lot of football left, our season is really just, beginning, quite honestly, but you know, we will be smart. we will make good decisions there as a coaching staff, talk to the coordinators about , you know, play time and all that and we will have a good plan later in the week. >> pederson added he would like to get backup quarterback nate sudfield playing time as

year for gift returns. our chante lens is live in cherry hill mall in chester count which are the crowd are picking up. >> reporter: crowded started off slow as many people here are hoping to cash in on those gift card while others are looking to return and change those holiday gifts. it was day after christmas shoppers filled the halls at cherry hill mall. >> 75 percent off. >> reporter: nice. >> yeah, better deal then black friday. >> reporter: many are looking for deep discounted deals, but for others, likely toia king- scott it is all about the gift returns. >> we will be here for christmas. you know, one size bigger for me and see if they can exchange it out. >> reporter: potential problem is that le toy bought her husband's gift than line at macy's.com. his jacket was shipped to their home. they went into macy's to try

to save time and money from gift return mailing and shipping cost. >> we came to the store. they were very friendly, nice. they asked me the correct size for my husband. he tried it on. the exchange was easy. >> reporter: that wasn't the case after she said she ordered a dress on line for herself which wasn't a considered a gift purchase with another department store two months ago. >> difficult go to jc penny and got a nice white dress. i tried to exchange the dress same we did for a different size and it was more so find your own dress, you have to pay for the dress again, and then we will reimburse you or ship the dress back out to us and do it that way. i need that had dress that night. >> reporter: that is a tough situation. there is still plenty of time to shop at cherry hill mall. doors stay opened tonight half an hour later until 10:00 p.m. live from cherry hill, chantee lens for cbs-3 "eyewitness news".

of the year. >> absolutely dealing with a typical cold that is going to be lasting. we need to hunker down and prepare, temperatures are so cold, outside, we know that 31 k at center city philadelphia beautiful includedless sky ongoing right now, westerly wind at 12 miles an hour, blustery again today so that feels like temperature down to 22 and the night has just begun, our high temperature today only 33 degrees, we start off in the 20's. our normal high 42 degrees so 10 degrees shy of that. we're at 14 in mount pocono. twenty-nine in wilmington. thirty-one in allentown. as we pan out is there any relief anywhere? nep. eighteen in state college. eight above in buffalo. thirty-six in washington. arctic air has over taken the entire region, and near hour by hour forecast, we are dropping back down in the middle 20's by midnight. we will see increasing included that will slow the cooling a little bit but we

will be at 23 degrees by 2:00 he clock hour and down to 20 by early tomorrow morning. as we head into january, climate wise we are not looking much better on average , our coldest month of the year with a average high in philadelphia at 40 degrees. typically our second most snowy with 6.6 half inches of snow. february is our most snow moy. the coldest days of the year on average january 15th through the january 20th, so we have more cold in store. storm scan three showing us quiet conditions. lake effect snow machines turning off in and around erie , pennsylvania area giving those folks a break but as we head into your travel conditions we will be dealing with the cold, conditions as we head into tomorrow, so looking good, hitting the road or taking to the sky thursday as good as well but bitter sunshine and watching for a chance of snow as we head into friday. we have several snow chances but models in disagreement as we head into new years. scattered snow showers on friday with some light

accumulation, dusting to an inch is what it looks like right now, possibly some snow as indicated by european model but not gfs model however, gfs model is indicating we could see measurable snow as we head into new years day. hopefully we will see more alignment heading in the next couple days so stay tune to that evolving forecast. overnight tonight mostly cloudy and frigid, down to 19 degrees. for our wednesday cloudy conditions in the morning turning sunny but that will not help us on the in the temperature department. high of only 28 degrees, in the quite as breezy but still breezy at times so that wind chill temperature again tomorrow is going to be on the brutal side and this will be a long hall with arctic air, in command. you can see cold air, polar air entrenched across northeast, reenforcing shot as we head into friday for upcoming weekend high temperatures likely still in the 20's, and as we head into new years day on monday, 25 degrees, would make for the

they were dealing with below normal temperatures. rocky mountain to maine, temperatures are 10 to 20 degrees, below normal right now and traveling is proving treacherous in many places. demarco morgan has more from newark license liberty international airport in new jersey. >> i was than the wishing for it but we got it. >> reporter: whether they wanted it or not people from washington to maine woke up to a white christmas. >> i was, you know, happy with no snow, no shoveling. >> reporter: in new england snow fell in some areas at a rate up to 5 inches per hour

heavy snow with strong wind, led to 20,000 outages in massachusetts. wrapped snowfall caused dangerous conditions on the road. >> pretty much white out conditions. >> reporter: and in the sky. boston's logan airport one flight skidded off runway whale landing monday night, and earlier in the day blizzard conditions briefly shut down airport and caused 240 delays. bitter cold envelopes midwest, minnesota had wind gusts as much as 35 below 0n washington , washington and oregon saw one to 2 inches of snow. slick road led to dozens of crashes and delays. >> i don't want to drive anymore but i know i'm stuck in the middle, so i cannot go anywhere. >> reporter: parts of the new york and michigan could get 5 inches of snow before the week is out and then that weather system is attempting to head south east bringing

sleet, snow, ice and rain. demarco morgan for cbs news, newark, new jersey. and expect bitter cold down the shore this week and all across the region. if you have travel plans over the holidays meteorologist lauren casey has her travel forecast in just about 15 minutes, she will tell you also about some chances, plural, for some snow. atlantic city is new attraction, 227-foot tall wheel opened up for the first time on steel pier. chopper three caught this glimpse have the ride earlier today. wheel offers 40 temperature controlled gondolas that holds six passenger each and they ride less than 15 minutes. at night 13 you this lights will shine brightly over the ocean. it is now opened for holiday week until december 31st, starting at noon, but that is only if temperatures stay above 40 degrees. with so many children playing video games this week parents should ab wear of is what called gaming disorder. the disorder is being added to the official list of the

>> we have an active shooter. >> reporter: deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history happened october 1st in las vegas. stephen paddock opened fire on a music festival from his suite at mandalay bay hotel, 58 people were killed before paddock took his own life. twenty-six adults and children were killed inside of the first baptist church in sutherland springs, texas. police believe devin kelly was tarring his in-laws. suspect serial killer howell donaldson was arrested in tampa, florida. he was charged were four counts of the first degree murder ending a weeks long manhunt n charlottesville, a group of white national list clashed with counter demonstrators during a rally. witnesses say james field junior a suspect white national list drove his car in a crowd killing heather hire. that sparked calls to remove all confederate monuments. some of the 1500 confederate statue is a cross the country were taken down while others

mummers are moving into the pennsylvania convention center for some traditional theater shows on new years day kyw news radio reporter john mcdevitt shows us the setup. >> reporter: well, fancy brigade clubs are truck nothing large sets and props and other equipment for 21st fancy brigade finally. they have each club performing four and a half minute style broadway style production january 1st. bill berk is vice-president of the philadelphia association. >> it is all about the trophy and bragging rights. we are mummers. we are world famous mummers.

back/"eyewitness news" with what some are calling a christmas miracle. two men in ohio best friends for 60 years just found out they are actually brothers. walter mcfarland never knew his father, anal even robinson was adopted. curiosity about their family, lynn age led them to ancestry .com and it turns out that the life long friends shared the same birth mother. the two revealed discovery to friends and family on christmas eve. minnesota couple got an un expect christmas gift this
