. plunging into the deep freeze, it's a bitterly cold night and only colder when windchills will fall to near zero. battling fire and ice, a frigid weather and added challenge for crews fighting a condo fire in delaware county. plus the dramatic rescue of one famil family. >> a baby girl in her mother's arm, days ago, she was mauled by a racoon. tonight, little journey is on the rowed to recovery. we begin with a bitter blast of cold weather. and it's going to be sticking around for awhile. good evening, i'm jessica dean. ukee washington has the night off. >> getting over to lauren casey tracking the cold temperature, plus the windchill that is will make it feel colder. >> all this ramped up on christmas day, the temperatures plunge the winds elevated. santa brought this to us, we don't want it.

we want to return it. temperatures, struggle the 33 degrees, normal 42, degrees below. temperatures sub freezing in philadelphia at 27 degrees. we're going to stay sub freezing for about the next 180 plus hours. 21 right now in allentown, we're at seven in mount pocono. 20's in atlantic city. then, of course, factoring in even a little bit of a breeze, and feels like 17 in philly. feeling like nine in allentown and feeling like three below at this hour in mount pocono. and yes, we will have this continuance stretch of sub freezing high temperatures as we head into the rest of the week, and the upcoming weekend, potentially into next year. and windchills near zero. as we head into tomorrow night. and early thursday morning. including in the city. and immediate suburbs and as we push towards new year's day, it could be the coldest in philadelphia over 40 year, and

i'll have the details on this extended cold coming up in the full eyewitness forecast in just a few those frigid weather conditions are creating extra hazards for crews fighting a fire. alexandria hoff is live in brook haven where firefighters rescued a family off a third floor balcony. >> reporter: the family of three had to be taken down a 35-foot ladder to safety. luckily no one who was inside that building was injured. >> my first thoughts were that goes everything. >> mike was on the phone when someone started banging on the door of his brook haven condo. >> i opened the door. asked what was going on. they said fire. so i got out. >> reporter: only then did he stand back and see the extent of devastation that had been unfolding around 6:00 p.m. crews

were called to the hill top condominium for a report of fire and his family trapped >> they were brought down a ladder 35-foot ground ladder from the third floor balcony. the family was taken, nobody was hurt. >> reporter: out of all 18 units in the building, officials say no people or pets were injured. but the frigid conditions made the situation that much harder to handle for victims and firefighters. >> the ground is freezing, the water is freezing. >> reporter: the fire was under control an hour and a half after it started. a day after christmas, all could seem lost for these residents. but mike marter el sees it differently >> i'm here and that's the good thing, it's still a merry christmas. >> reporter: several witnesses told me they saw a person get taken into custody by police following this fire. law enforcement would not confirm if for he is and the

cause of this fire is still under investigation. reporting live in delaware county. alexandria hoff cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> thank you. while most of us did not see a white christmas, erie, pennsylvania got 50 inches of snow in about 36 hours. that's the highest in pennsylvania two-day history. govern wolf called to assist in the aftermath. much of the country is dealing with winter weather and that's making travel difficult. >> reporter: residents spent the day diggings out from record snowfall. >> it's ridiculous. i keep pecking away at it. we'll get it cleared. >> you can't tell how bad it is. >> reporter: even by lake effects standards the scene was jaw dropping, the city was hit with over 50 inches of snow, which fell in only about 36 hours. >> a lot of snow keep coming.

limited visibility and hazard conditions backed up traffic on a portion of interstate 90. snow and ice led to this deadly accident on a highway in kansas city missouri, four people were killed. records low temperatures sent parts of the midwest into the deep freeze. minneapolis saw a low of negative two. in chicago, temperatures hovered around 0, not cold enough to keep shoppers from hitting the mall. >> we're from around here we're used to this. >> reporter: forecasters say the cold bath of air will slide east over the next few days where it will stick around until after the new year. cbs3 "eyewitness news." a police pursuit end with an officer shooting robbery suspect in west philadelphia. a suspect wanted for two robberies crash i do not another car at 49th and walnut. an officer shot the man in the chest after he allegedly tried to pull what appeared to be a

weapon from his waistband. the officer was not hurt. >> the officer had to protect himself and other people present, a gunpoint robbery and you do have a duty to protect yourself >> the officer involved has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. at last check, that suspect remains in critical condition. shorts are investigating a deadly shooting in philadelphia's germantown neighborhood this afternoon on green street. an 18-year-old male was shot once in the stomach, twice in the neck. that victim was tropical storm nated to temple university hospital, where he was pronounced dead. police have not made any arrests. authorities say the man who killed his mother in bethlehem township last week leading to an eight-hour standoff was not legally permitted to own a gun. this was the scene on friday in the 1500 block of dennis street. authorities say 36-year-old justin kept heart fired more than 100 rounds at police who

initially showed up to investigate a woman body in the front yard. the woman was the suspect's mother. authorities say cap heart shot her 11 times using firearms that likely belonged to his father >> it's another example of an individual not able to legally possess a firearm but he had a number of them killing his mother and police officers and others that were at the scene that day >> authorities say it's a miracle no officers were hurt. it ended when the suspect was found dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound >> we're hearing from the mother of annin the infant attacked by a racoon in north philadelphia. the four month old named journey was released from hospital after being attacked last week inside an apartment on north 22 street. journey was rushed to the hospital where she received 65 stitches and multiple razor blade bee shots. her mother said the attack
