to day, because of this storm. we are gearing up for a very busy day ahead on cbs-3 so lets start with katie and meisha with traffic and weather. >> good morning, guys, bright and early for good reason. it is not all of the snow just yet it was the icy, very, very slick conditions out there. we are seeing some road that are already salted but you have a lot of speed restrictionness play and so katie, what will happen this morning. >> we still have just snow, i definitely had snow covered road. coming through neighborhood and haven't been treated you will be battling through that. got to take it slow that is all is there to it. hopefully you are waking up with us because you set the alarm earlier if you must get out in this. i'm sure we will see a lot of scrolling districts that don't have school today. here's latest. here's what happened since yesterday, boy did that escalate, quickly we knew this storm would be a monster but that track was so, so, critical as to what would end up happening. it is still barreling through and at this point, it is moved
4:02 am
enough inland that it is allowing for much higher totals then originally anticipated. that is what always throws you the wild card with these coastal systems. it did this time. in the wake of this we will start to clear out but arctic, chill and wind start to settle n here's just a sampling of what you're currently finding when it comes to winter alerts winter weather advisory, winter storm warnings now including philadelphia so it has just, shifted inland and blizzard warnings, down along the shore points. this will go through the majority of the day, for our area. so the snow is coming down obviously right now we are at 25 degrees at the airport. certainly below freezing, every where here and that will support strictly snow, across the region as a whole. we will take a look at future weather here, at lee thankfully see bulk of this get out of here later this afternoon but coming up we will talk about how much snow,
4:03 am
has fallen already and when you can expect this to completely clear out plus how cold it will feel because you cannot discount cold and wind that will come in the wake of this we will have more on that later. >> it is a very busy morning, thanks very much, katie. we are looking outside at garden state parkway live look , garden state parkway we have speed restriction in play , parkway between cape may and toms river 35 miles an hurry distributions right now. i wouldn't be surprise if you had are taking it slower then that, because of how slippery and slick those road are going to be. especially more vehicles we will get out there the exhaust will melt that ice and re freeze right away and it will leave a lot of black ice for us as well. new jersey turnpike also under a speed restriction between delaware memorial bridge and route 168, 45 miles an hour here and in delaware 495 between 95 and claymont 55 miles an hour here. again i would take it even slower than 55 miles an hour. also, we have a tractor trailer fire out there at
4:04 am
carney's .295 southbound closed past route 48, new jersey turnpike or route 130 is your best alternate around this i would certainly use them, also, take a look at how snowy around this area 422 westbound at trooper is where we are seeing some snow, actually accumulate on the road surface and we have a disabled vehicle and flashing lights. we are not seeing a lot of vehicles behind it but if we were you would have to take it so slow around this corner where we will get pile up accident that do happen. then just some snow here as well blue route at ridge pike we will talk about all this snow and where we are seeing it coming up in the next ten minutes, rahel and jan, back to you. new jersey shore is expect to take a direct hit from this winter storm. >> lets get out to eyewitness nice reporter frank do live in atlantic city think morning where a blizzard warning is in effect, what is it like out there. >> well, jan and rahel it is snowing, very light, fine snow
4:05 am
mixed in with some of the snow that has fallen and wind is blowing it all around. i'm on the boardwalk here. you can see, that some significant snowfall, came down here overnight. we have had crews down here at the shore since last night anal sandra hoff was saying it started to, snow around cape may around 9:00 p.m. just from the several hours that i have been down here it has been snowing on and off. you can see here very active, these plows have been going back and forth making sure that this boardwalk stays clear. wave, hi. and then we have actually seen people walking up and down boardwalk. they are not here right now but just before you came to us a couple had a romantic stroll down the boardwalk, even at 4:00 in the morning you just can't stop that. on our way here conditions were not great i'll be honest. there were tons of snowplows up along the way from the ac expressway, there was waiting, for accumulation, and, still,
4:06 am
the road were not great, very slippery. very slick. so if you could just stay home and avoid getting on those road living around the shore area but you can see crews are out here working and it is still calling these very extreme road conditions, but, as i mentioned there are a ton have people surprisingly out in the middle of the night here in atlantic city. i did speak to some of them. we will talk to them about the conditions how they are working out in the cold and how they are driving out in this weather. but for now back to you in the studio. >> pretty decent snow in atlantic city, all right, thank you. also cape may lewis ferry suspended operations, as you can see ferry has been dealing with ice build up in the cape may canal. officials are concerned with the high wind expect with the storm. the storm is having a big impact on air travel we stopped by philadelphia international about an hour ago and all ready more than 120 flights have been cans told day. if you are still planning to head to the airport check with
4:07 am
your airline before you head out the door. a winter storm warning is in effect for new castle county, delaware. >> let's go to chantee lens with the look at the conditions there i can see you are well prepared. what is it looking like out there. >> reporter: i'm ready, i just put these on because at first i was like there is not much wind but as you were talking let me put these down. photo journalist kyle hall shared these were me, so thank you. the condition, the winds are picking up we are in new castle, by wilmington border. i will step to the side. you can see a drift plow truck driver right there kyle can show him that is what we have been seeing. they have been out by highway 13 plowing the road there. if we look down to the ground there is very little accumulation maybe an inch or so but it is expect to be between one and three, that is what i learned after speaking with meteorologist matt peterson.
4:08 am
now we will swing it around to highway 13, if kyle can to show you the road. it is not too bad right new because plow drivers is there another one that just went by has been going around the clock keeping this area clear. i know they will be commuting from delaware to philadelphia, so these road are vital. we were deriving done own i-95 near 495 split, the road and visibility was much letter then what we are seeing right new but this all can change and we are going to continue to machine for the conditions as they continue. that is very latest live from delaware, chantee lens for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> you should know everybody in the studio is very impress ed with your goggles, shout out to kyle hall, reporting. >> reporter: thank you. see you soon. meantime penndot is preparing for the war, with more than 40,000 tons of salt
4:09 am
and 375 pieces of equipment at the ready. road crews are taking no chances. hours ago dozens of trash trucks were converted into snowplows, they took off from the city maintenance yard in holmesberg. salt trucks were dispatched around midnight. city officials are calling this storm challenging but they say they are prepared. >> we do expect freezing conditions and high drifts which will make this a very challenging event but the department, we will mobilize throughout the evening to begin salt operation and also follow-up from the salt operation when the snow accumulation hits significant levels with the plowing operation. >> city officials are urging people to stay off the roads. city of philadelphia is under a snow emergency which means all park cars must be moved off of the snow emergency routes by midnight. "eyewitness news" was on south broad street as police ticketed vehicles overnight, those ticketed vehicles will be relocated by tow trucks. now lets get out to
4:10 am
"eyewitness news" reporter pat gallen live in south philadelphia where those car owners have one choice, move it or lose it, good morning, pat. >> reporter: that is a good way to put it, good morning. we are live along broad street in south philadelphia, and as we know philadelphia public schools are closed to day and archdiocese schools also closed so kid are off. i hope you got milk, eggs, french toast will be needed. i will go around the city of philadelphia looking for that food. if you have in the gone out maybe now you can go get those ingredients because along broad street they are starting to ticket people and that means your car will be towed if you are along that snow emergency route. philadelphia has enforced the snow emergency which means all parked cars must be moved off, for plowing, now when moving your car the city says parkas far from the corner of the street as possible, and vehicles park too close to the corners get in the way of snowplows, obviously trying to turn those corners.
4:11 am
snow emergency information and a map can be found at philadelphia streets.com, i think it is a good idea if you are parked along broad street, good idea to get up, out here dust off car and get it out of the way because plows as snow accumulates will come out very , very soon. growing up in the city of philadelphia we always looked forward to the snow days because of what i just mentioned french toast, hot chocolate, sledding. as that happens as snow accumulates we will be able to break off, the shovel, and tommy g behind the camera he brought sled we will get ready for all of that but for right now we are live along broad street hoping people do not get towed but as you said it is move it or lose it along the snow emergency route. >> when they relocate those cars they go by lemon hill drive but there are a couple locations that is a real headache. >> yes. still ahead, on "eyewitness news" power ball

precipitation to our area this morning began pounding south carolina yesterday. interstate i-95 was reduced to a icy parking lot as drivers struggled to navigate slippery roads and white out conditions traffic on the busy interstate there was backed up for miles, number of wrecks reached into the hundreds. folks as far south as georgia, florida saw a coating of white in southeastern georgia these guys who don't see snow decided to make most of witt a snowball fight. in tall has think guy was exited to see snow for the very first time he and his pal there ran around, in delight. other kid took the opportunity to make snow angels, you don't see snow very much you have to have fun in it. >> even if you do around here i'm sure a lot of kid will be having fun in it. >> pat gallen later this morning. >> you heard him say he has a sled. >> he is ready. >> katie, all depend on perspective. for us, snow day we start
4:16 am
early. for the kid, snow day. >> up until i got out of grade school i was all about the snow, then you have to go out in it and do a job. you have to start adulting at a certain age. looking at a live neighborhood network. here indeed it looks different it was beautiful, clear, crisp , nice outside yesterday. maybe this is nice to you. beautiful blanket of snow up along the boardwalk unmarred by footprints just yet but it is definitely going to be quite harsh. you can see snow blowing through camera in the live neighborhood network one of the many places that the snow is coming down. local zoom shows heavier band coming in cape may county, atlantic county and right along the shore. that is where we expect since you got more moisture to end up with the heaviest amount of snow from this but clearly the snow has moved far enough inland that we have it falling even as far inland as the state capitol of harrisburg.
4:17 am
it is definitely coming down every where. this is still a essentially an all day events. it will start to wrap up in the afternoon but then problems in the aftermath of that for the evening drive. as this continues to rotate away with time today wind picks up, cold takes over and we have a blizzard warning posted down the shore. lets talk about the meaning of that. you don't have to have snow currently falling for it to be qualified as a blizzard. it is either falling and or blowing of snow with gusts as high as 35 plus miles an hour. we will easily have that out there. it reduces your visibility. as day goes on if you do not to have travel near the shore would i advise thaw don't. this has to last for three hours. so that is what we're facing here at the shore, further inland winter storm warning is a story but we have substantial wind speed not in the 30's just yet but i have seen gusts in the 30's already in handful of spots and you
4:18 am
really do have some, yeah, noticeable wind chill that comes with this. this is our expectation up to 10 inches, doubling total this same time yesterday because the track shifted west war. we kept saying, it is tricky, you have to stick with us but this is what we're expecting now that we are in the game up to 10 inches down near shore points. you have some shoveling do folks. looking forward it is looking brutally cold come tomorrow in the teens at best and we may be dealing with record cold that is still the call for saturday at least sun will shine, meisha. >> thank you so much. we are looking at live shots around town. basically what we are seeing is speed restrictionness play, not to mention snow, sleeting road, garden state parkway between cape may and toms river we are down to 35 miles an hurry distribution. if that is dunn to 35 i can guarantee that you should be either taking it maybe slower. new jersey turnpike between delaware memorial bridge and
4:19 am
route 73. you are down to 45 miles an her there and also in delaware you have got some speed restrictionness play too 495 between 95 and claymont we have 55 miles an hour there. i will probably in these conditions take it slower then that. not to mention we have tractor trailer fire at carney's .295 southbound it is closed pennsylvania route 48 you will to have use new jersey turnpike or route 130 as your alternate around there still showing green which is good but if you have to head out and you have to be driving i would absolutely give yourself extra time even if there is nobody else out on the roadway because of, look at this, this is what you will be heading out to, this is a disabled vehicle 422 westbound at trooper but around this area streets are looking like this and we have conditions like this it doesn't matter even if you have all wheel drive or even if you happen to have winter tires which i doubt do you but even if you do this will certainly still pose an
4:20 am
issue for you. if you do not you will have to take it very, very slow in these very slippery conditions blue route at ridge pike another area with lots of snow and ice. more on this coming up in a bit. jan and rahel back to you. the power ball is still anyone's game and now it is even bigger. >> jackpot is 550 after no one hit it last night, here are winning numbers: two, 18, 37, 39, 42 and power ball was 12. nine jackpot prizes total 30 million. next drawing is saturday. mega millions jackpot has grown to 418 million-dollar, that drawing for that lottery is tomorrow night. on the healthwatch now a big increase in the number of flu cases in pennsylvania, in the past week being blamed for six deaths in the commonwealth latest map from the centers for disease control shows the flu widespread across much of the country. in pennsylvania, there are more than 6,000 confirmed case
