headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. millions of people up and down the east coast are waking up to dangerously cold temperatures after a powerful winter storm pummeled the region with snow, ice, and wind. more than a foot of snow fell in many places across the northeast yesterday. in new england, coastal flooding reached historic levels. there have been at least 18 weather-related deaths. hena doba is here in new york with the very latest. hena, good morning r good morning, anne-marie. after the winter weather dropped several inches of snow here in columbus, they're bracing for a deep freeze. many will be waking up to temperatures in the teens or single digits. a woman in massachusetts being rescued by a front loader. the first floor flooded aft edf the snow and wind weren't

enough. others nearby also experienced historic flooding. >> it was pounding. >> reporter: nearly 500 national guard members were called in for flood merges in several states. most are still digging out from the snow. plymouth, connecticut, got caught off guard by almost a foot and a half. the accumulation in maryland was so bad in parted even these two snow plows got stuck and in new york city, the iconic lights and signs were barely visible at the height of the storm. this tractor trailer was left blocking an intersection. as extreme cold is expected to freeze anything that hasn't been shoveled away. officials all day on the coast are asking people to stay off the roads. police officers in particularly warm weather states like here in south carolina are particularly

worried about drivers who have never had to deal with icy conditions. >> unless you're driving a zambo zamboni, you're not going to be able to control the vehicle, especially at higher speeds. >> reporter: many states will be in for another round early next week as a system developing in the northwest makes its way east. forecasters are predicting with the bitter cold and high winds, some areas will feel as low as minus 15 degrees. anne-marie. >> oh, that sounds absolutely awful. hena doba here in new york city. thank you so much. well, more than a thousand flights are already canceled today as airports up and down the east coast try to dig out from the snow and ice. nearly 5,000 flights were canceled yesterday. jfk international airport was forced to close, and operations were shut down at boston's logan int international airport. planes circled in the air looking for an open airport to

lachbltd one british airways flight had to turn around and go back to london. chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has the latest. >> after our major storm that brought accumulating snow from florida all the way up to maine, it's all about the cold now. a big bitter blast of cold air is coming down and setting up shot across parts of the great lakes, the northeast, and the coast. we have widespread windchill advisories and freeze warnings all the way down to west florida. so that care air extends all the way down to the coldest and sunniest spots. they'll be quite chilly by florida standards as we look at friday. here are your windchills. throughout friday, a lot of winds still being generated by that storm system and the windchill values will stay very low at the start of the weekend. as for our high temperatures, not very high.

many will be record-setting friday into saturday, anywhere from cleveland to boston where highs will stay in the single digits to start the weekend. do we want some good news. a chance for some milder air to begin fighting bachlkt good old-fashioned january thaw a week after that. changes are coming. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. on to politics now. president trump reportedly pushed jeffrey sessions. "the new york times" first reported the president told white house counsel to urge sessions not to step aside. sessions recused himself in march. the "times" said when mcgahn was not successful the president got angry. the white house did not respond to a request for comments. the explosive new book "fire

immigration deal. lawmakers are trying to come up with a plan that extends the legal status of hundreds of thousands of d.r.e.a.m.ers who were brought to the u.s. as children. and there's new uncertainty in the movement to legalize marijuana. attorney general jeff sessions rescinded a policy that eased enforcement of federal marijuana laws in states where the drug is legal. in a memo he said federal prosecutors can decide on their own how aggressively they enforce marijuana laws based on the demands of their district. the drug remains illegal federally even though some states have legalized it. in colorado his office will not change its approach in how it prosecutes marijuana crimes. north korea and south korea have agreed to their first talks. it will be the first talk in two years. a seoul official said north korea accepted an offer to meet

39 sears storeses will close between march and april. that's in addition to 250 announced last year. macy's will shed some cutting about 5,000 jobs. it's about an overall plan to close some 150 places. cdc warns may be linked to e. coli. five were hospitalized and two died. the cdc says the outbreak started in mid-november. and tax season will begin monday, january 29th, mark your calendars. the irs said it will start accepting paper and electronic filings that day. the deadline is april 17th.
