12:00 pm
busted tail. and impressed the boss. maybe it's time to be your own? transform your career with strayer university's mba program today. let's get it. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news." >> for the first time in 13 years the eagles are headed to the superbowl at a rematch with the new england patriots in superbowl 52. >> merrill reese with the call the eagles are going to the superbowl after 13 long years, it is time for a rematch with the new england patriots. >> and after the win thousands of fans poured into the sit streets to celebrate and who can blame them? this is our first superbowl since 2005. >> and this is where it all happened. lincoln financial field was rocking last night, and today
12:01 pm
you can see the mess that was left behind. some very excited and probably tired fans. >> but tired or not, it will be a great day to be an eagles fan, good afternoon, i'm jim donovan. >> i'm rahel solomon. the birds are flying to the superbowl, now less than two weeks, a great playoff game yesterday. the eagles survived early viking touchdown, then turned it on. quarterback nick foles through three touchdown passes, and the running game scored another, and the defense even scored on an interception return. at the end the eagles raised the nfl trophy, and odds now on even greater prize. >> and that greater prize is a superbowl win on february 4th, in minneapolis. >> eagles coach doug pederson meeting the coach right now. >> we did help him from time to time. but there were also times when he had to be on an island. >> block defensive end who had heck of a year. and, had a lot of confidence, and these are obviously the things we've seen of him, his
12:02 pm
maturity, his growth as a left tackle. and played extremely well last night. >> doug, how much this weekend , so many distractions? >> yes, i think it is important you keep this week normal again a lot of preparation for the game. we can get a lot of good work. >> this week without the minimal distractions. and then next week get up there and continue to implement the plan, continue to review and work and yes we can get a lot done this week. >> last night? >> you know what, i just went home. i just went home. some family in town, my mom was here, my boys, from school were in town, had some friends from louisianna, we just enjoyed the moment. >> i did sleep. about 2:00 a.m., finally slept >> everybody talked about emotionally -- tired -- (
12:03 pm
question from reporter) -- thought it was huge. you degrees were able to do this. i don't know, emotional? >> well, obviously, i don't only know what i know. and i feel like i need to put our team in the best possible situations during the week, during the season, during the year. for me it all starts back in o ta's. and if i'm not talking about situation at. al foot back back then, we won't have the biggest game of our carreers and our lives like we did last night. if i don't talk about red zone back then, then we can't perform in the red zone like we've done all season.
12:04 pm
you know, if i don't talk about third down, and implement third down offensively and defensively, then we can't be one of the top third down offenses and defenses in the national football league. i think that's just preparing our guys, and then having great coordinators, you know, jim sword, dave, having three great coordinators that i lean onto help put great game plans together and not only, not only the schemes, but being able to communicate, and teach the game plan during the week, and during the season, and having our team ready to go. you know, i felt that, you know, all season our players were; you know, well prepared during the week, i felt like they were, you know, energetic , ready to go every sunday. these last two post-season games, and i think even from,
12:05 pm
you know, from my stand point as a play caller, staying, staying aggressive, staying maybe a little unorthodox, you know, the fourth down's, you know, two-point conversions, all of that is a part of it, but i just think if i don't prepare the team, that way, and being smart, and being that sort of staying ahead of the game, so to speak, then you're playing catch up. you're not winning these games >> how is you're meisha until connection -- . >> well i think having the connection, having been in the lockerroom, i think, understanding the dynamic of what a team, what a team needs , what a team should feel , how we should practice, how we should play, when to take the pads off, when to put the pads back on, i think all of that is part of, you know, that emotional intelligence
12:06 pm
that we all -- and i tried to strive for and to have with the guys. and i think that relationship has gone a long way there season. >> doug, superbowl week, distractions how much if anything -- away from the facility, guys in a hotel, how much? >> yes, we talked back then, that this was a sort after precursor for hopefully this opportunity. and casino every going through it, a little bit with, you know, the team hotel, the meetings, the travel to a practice site, you know, the media obligations and things like that, and now, now having been through it, it makes it a little bit easier, you know, going up to minneapolis. but, you know, it is just on a grand err, bigger stage, obviously, so the attention will be a lot more, there will be a lot more distractions, a
12:07 pm
lot more pulling on, you know, coaches, players, personnel, and you know, having gone through it, you know, in l.a., really has given us a leg up now, going up there. >> you guys had two weeks that year. >> we did. >> that was a long time ago. is that helpful to you now? >> yes, it is very helpful. again it goes back to getting a lot of work done this week, you know, preparing the guys, getting film study in. and then when you get up there , it is just a matter of just continuing to row view, implementing the plan during the week, and, you know, just building toward the game. but, you know, that's the way we did it then. and really not much has changed since. >> (question from the press). >> we didn't do anything before the game. nothing before the game. everything now is from today going forward. >> keep everything normal, but obviously now it will be
12:08 pm
normal for the superbowl. how do you manage that with your players? >> well, it is cents just i got to just communicate, you know, i keep things on a rigid type schedule, you know, make sure the guys are focused, you know, on the job at hands. they even said it after the game, last night in the lockerroom, that there is a lot of unfinished business still to do. we still, you know, there is cents one game left. one game left in this season. and, you know, we've come this far, want to headache sure we stay focused and great lockerroom as you guys know, trust my leaders of the team to get the job done. >> do you have a sense what this means? >> you know, i think until i'm out there, you know, in the community, and listening, what i've seen on tv and what i experienced last night with our fans, and just even today,
12:09 pm
and the text messages, and the emails, and everything that you get, i mean, it is pretty incredible. pretty incredible. to have played here a long time ago, and to kind of experience the passion then, to what they're feeling today, i'm excited for them, for our fans, and, you know, they're a lot like us. i mean, we've been underdogs for the last couple of weeks. and, you know, our fans feel that. and they understand that. and you know we're excited to have won these last two games obviously. and we hope to have the entire eagles nation up in minneapolis for a game in two weeks. >> (question f press). >> how important was that foundation -- >> i think it is important. he reminded me, again last night, after the game, that i was the only player or the only coach to go out and work him out as a player, and
12:10 pm
leading up to that draft. you know, it goes a long way. it goes a long way in his confidence, my confidence in him, and understanding that dynamic, even though we separated and went a couple of different ways. but to be able to come back together now and do the things that we have been able to do, he has been able to do, is not only a credit to him but i think just the overall study that we did back in 2012. >> overcoming injuries this year, now foles -- >> i said everything, it says, too, you know, that it is just a mix mentality. it also means that you have some veteran players that keep things together. and good coaching staff. and it is just i think a tribute to the players, and everyone involved that they
12:11 pm
can keep, keep things going, even through that adversity. >> (question from the press) >> well, one, it is extremely hard to win any game, you know , each week, it is extremely hard to win. and really there is not, i mean, you just look at last year's team, last year's season. we had a chance to win some of those games, you know, those close games that we lost. we had a chance to win a few more of those. and we didn't. but we were able to do that this year. and you continue to learn from , you know, previous experiences, and, you know, to take carson in a second year, and to do the things we were able to do with him. a lot of it is on the player, too, on carson to study and prepare and to work out in the
12:12 pm
off-season, to throw and to get all of his receivers together in north dakota, do the things that they did. you know, prepares you for the season. some of the success that you have. and you know it is just whether that's a blueprint, a model, whatever, i think every team is different. but i do think that when you look at guys, whether they're free agents, or in the draft, you want to make sure that they're character fits with what i'm preaching, you know, what i'm saying to the team, so that whether we bring them in, they can just roll up their sleeves and go to work like everybody else. >> previous -- (question from the press) -- >> i don't know. you know, i can -- the fact
12:13 pm
that he's had a chance to work with our guys now for the past month, you know, there is a lot more confidence there. they're on the same page. you know, the run game obviously helps some of the play action stuff we've done helps him. you know, and, listen, he's -- that's who nick is. you know, and just having time now with the offense, has been able to open up some of those opportunities down the field. >> last night's game, offensive line have to re watch it again, have they played any better in the season? >> probably not. probably not. i think this is the best they've played as a unit. you know, all the way across the board, from lane to big v, these guys, you know, we haven't talked a whole lot about them this year. but this is a group that, you know, coach just does tremendous job preparing these guys each week, has great running plan together, our
12:14 pm
protection schemes, they just go to work. you know, they just come to work on tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, and get the job done. and sometimes it is not always pretty but it doesn't have to be. at the end of the day we find a way, they find a way. and they were able to do it last night and put a really good performance together. >> doug, we've all seen teams crumble under the lights if they're not prepared. what quality do you see in this team that gives you confidence that they can handle the stage? >> well, you know, of course it has been a while since, you know, not only the eagles have been there but we do have couple of players that have been there just as early as last season. and, you know, we can lean on those guys obviously, and some of the experiences cents that some of our other players have been in the superbowl and all of that. but, you know, listen, i trust my leaders and the team. i trust that they will, you
12:15 pm
know, keep this group focused and grounded. and it is, you know, an all hands-on deck mentality. they'll come to work, you know , this week, ready to go, eager to go. and they've been able to do it all season. you know? and even the la trip. you know, is a great kind of sort of a spotlight the way they handle their business in l.a. to get that win, you know, gives you a lot of confidence going into this week. >> the guys -- lean on those kind of pick up, prepare already -- >> yes, i mean, not a whole lot. you know, i mean they're different, we're different. you know we will prepare the same way, you know, that we always have, you know, sure they'll have some comments maybe later in the week. you know, just matter of us
12:16 pm
just getting ourselves ready to go and preparing for this. >> is it something to see the patriots -- >> you know, listen, i think everybody in the league sort of envies the success to some extent. and rightfully so. they, you know, they've been there, done that, many times. and that's something that every other team, you know, would love to have. you know, it is impressive obviously, and it is well respected, and well documented you know, at the same time, we're just going to prepare the same. and try to block out all of the noise. there is going to be a lot. lot written, both extremes. but again, our guys have been resilient. they've been able to block that noise out. and, you know, once the ball is teed up, kick off, you know , just trust our players, trust our schemes, and play football.
12:17 pm
>> (question from the press). >> from the outside, why is that? >> why was i less concerned or not as concerned? >> what were you seeing behind the scenes? >> they just new that, well, you know, after the giant game , obviously it was cents a great game, we still needed a game or two thereto clinch home field and all of that kind of stuff, and, you know, just needed time. just needed time. and, you know, we didn't have whole lot of time but at the same, you know, we just needed that, we needed time to work. we needed time to get nick kinds of caught up. again going back to training camp, he mission add lot of training camp, reps with those guys during the regular season , carson taking all of the snaps. you know, just the way it is. so it is just a matter of him getting comfortable again, playing the quarterback position, and being on the same page with our guys.
12:18 pm
and so you kind of slowly seeing the progression of the success that he's had since that time. and for us internally that's what it was about. just getting time and being able to work together. >> lags week, wrong feeling pretty confident? >> you never know until obviously you play the game if your scheme and all of that, you know, works, but, listen, at the end of the day, there is cents no magical offense or defensive play or special teams play. it comes down to players and players making plays. and, you know, our guys did that last night. you know, yes, you do feel i'm sure, you know, the vikings felt the same way in their plan, too. a lot of times just comes down to it always comes down to the players. i mean, that's just the end,
12:19 pm
you know, bottom women line, comes down to players making plays. >> (question from the press). >> is that coming from -- are you certain personalities -- >> you know, it is probably the -- probably one of the calm i've seen our guys, most relaxed i've seen our guys, all season. you know, dow want them to feel relaxed. you know, if i'm tight, uptight, then they'll feel it. they'll probably react the same way. and so i want them to, you know, let their personalities show. let them have fun, enjoy the moment, this is why we coach and play, as for these opportunities and these moments right here. and, yes, i felt like our guys were not only well prepared, but relaxed going into that game.
12:20 pm
>> he just keeps talking to him, mentoring him, teaching him, you know, how to be -- how to be a professional, how to play the defensive ends spot. and, you know, chris is -- he's just a great mentor to derrick, and some of the young players on our team. and, you know, derrick continues to grow, and seems to be, you know, making some big plays in these games here down the stretch. and i do feel like, you know, chris and his leadership ability has helped him, helped him do that. >> all right. >> thank you. >> when will you be back in your office? >> in a little while. maybe half hour. >> that's eagles coach doug pederson talking with reporters live from the nova care complex. >> we'll have much more from coach pederson later today on "eyewitness news" beginning at 5:00. >> meantime thousands of excited eagles fans here in philadelphia poured into the
12:21 pm
street last night to celebrate the new nfc champs. >> our joe holden was in the middle of all of the action in mayfair, he's back at frankford and cottman with how police say it all turned out. hi, joe. >> reporter: hi, rahel, jim. it is peaceful out here, back to normal to say the least. the only reminds their there was a party for 12,000 out here, last night, is the grease, lesson the polls, there was some damage to this trash can right here behind me , the city worker busy fixing things here, guess what , they even criscoed the parking meters. slathered in spatula work of crisco there. now, take a look at the scene, as things got rocking and rolling out here, the jubilant eagles fans flooding the intersection of cottman and frankford avenues. this was ground zero as the birds took the nfc championship by storm. and punched their tickets for a date at the superbowl. police staff shows city-wide there were six arrest total for all of the revolry that we saw. two were for disorderly
12:22 pm
conduct, one for the assault of state police trooper and three for counterfeit ticket sales. there were no incidents at this location according to police officials, the party lasted for about 90 minutes and police then made decision to call it a night. >> we made the choice to wrap it up. we had some crowds in the middle that were completely inebriated. and they were just having fun themselves, but again start to gel little operate of hand. we gave the crowd a good hour and a half to two hours almost to celebrate. and they were having a great time. all the officers were having great time, it was a great atmosphere, and we decided at that point just to -- it was enough. >> and police tell me they drew a lot from the 2008 phillies world series on how to deal with a magnitude crowd of this size. again, 12,000 people, the crowd was diminished in less
12:23 pm
than ten minute, because of how they work, diminishing the crowd and getting people out of this intersection. guess what of course as you might imagine they plan on doing this in less than two weeks. more on that, and how they handle that size after crowd coming up on "eyewitness news" starting at 5:00. reporting live at cottman and frankford in mayfair, joe holden, cbs-3 "eyewitness news,? >> thanks so much, joe. appreciate it. >> we'll have more news when cbs eye on the community... presented by target. there's nothing more rewarding than achieving a hard earned goal. that's why target supports students run philly style. we work with kids to teach them the skills they need to achieve and set goals through marathon training. giving back has been part of our dna, so, the more we stay involved, the more we're being true to ourselves as a corporate partner. cbs eye on the community is sponsored by target.
