>> ♪ >> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> tonight on "eyewitness news," dry no more. if you have to head out bring your umbrella. the weekend washout is under way and right now the region is under a.m. flood watch. one look at storm scan3 shows that band of rain moving up and into our region this evening bringing the possibility of some heavy downpours with it. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm alexandria hoff in for natasha brown. the rain hack coming down since early this afternoon and it's going to continue to be a soggyght. meteorologist matt peterson is

in for lauren this evening. much of our region is under a flood watch. how much rain are we talking about. >> multiple inches of rain. it's going to expand as we go through the night. widespread showers. this is what center city looked like early this afternoon. you needed the rain boots because it was a soggy, soggy start to the weekend. those showers came in really into the midafternoon is really when they started to really pick up and storm scan3 from the last three hours shows you that again right about 4 o'clock or so we start to get those showers moving in and then they're going to be here with us all the way through the overnight hours tonight. storm scan3 showing a little bit of a more pocket of heavy rainfall into burlington county down towards toms river new jersey as well. the good news is this isn't a really sustained line of showers and thunderstorm activity. we're getting a little bit of a break. this is over the western suburbs, down towards dover showers as well. as we zoom out you can see this cold front is huge

stretching from maine through pennsylvania back down into the tennessee river valley and back town towards the bayou and louisiana. this is going to slowly propagate to the east bring showers with heavier downpours as we get into the overnight tonight and especially into our sunday as well. so looking for the rest of this evening 10 o'clock tonight temperatures in the 40's. 47 degrees with that rain really picking back up. towards midnight still in the 40's, rain likely and then as we go into tomorrow morning, some patchy dense fog is possible early in the day with temperatures there alex in the mid 40's as well. taking a quick peek into the really the next couple of hours and then into tomorrow we're talking about our flood watch, that heavy rain and then also an active week through the entire work week alex in thank you matt. authorities say a correctional officer shot a just released inmate during an attempted carjacking. it happened in a parking lot near the curran fromhold correctional facility in holmesburg last night. investigators say 26-year-old jamaal bennett had just been freed when he tried to steal a correctional officer's car.

police say there was a struggle and the officer shot the man in the chest. he had just gone off duty and was heading home. >> at this time it appears that this inmate had just been released the same time that the correctional officer reported off duty from the same facility and their paths crossed in the parking lot and that's when the inmate approached the correctional officer. >> bennett is in critical condition. the correctional officer was treated for injuries to his head, face and neck. a murder investigation is under way in east germantown. authorities found a man shot in the head on the 300 block of queen lane this morning. the victim has not been identified but police say he is in his 30's. so far no arrests. in atlantic county authorities have charged a hamilton township man in connection with the death of his four month old son. doctors told police they believe josé rojas severely beat his son.

on january 29th the child was found unresponsive at his family house on the 6000 block of hoofer drive. he died from his injuries last sunday. rojas is charged with an 58ed manslaughter. families are taking action to lower the homicide rate in philadelphia. the erase the rate walk was held today about two dozen people walked from 66th and broad in west oak lane to university city. their goal is to raise awareness about violence in the city. they walked in memory of damond garner. he was not and killed inside of a house last june. >> whoever killed him is still on the street right now. so, we decided to step up and do something in the community and to hopefully start reaching people. >> garner says it's not only time to erase the homicide rate but be known for greatness in this community. the 29th annual philadelphia tattoo convention is under way and the line to get in is long. artists from across the country are gathering at the pennsylvania convention center.

that is where "eyewitness news" reporter alycia nieves is. the demand is high. >> reporter: there's about a couple hundred people just huddled outside the convention center doors. earlier we saw thousands of people out here, some since 11 o'clock this morning trying get into this tattoo convention. we actually have some video of this of that line when it stretched around the block at least three blocks actually around the convention center. that is how popular this event is today. we are told in total about 20000 people are pack the convention center for the 20th annual philadelphia tattoo arts convention. you know it's touted to be at the largest tattoo convention in the world. there are more than 1400 tattoo artists from the states and places as far as japan and germany. they are here all set to at too many of these people attending the convention. we spoke to the founder of

this tattoo event earlier and he told us a bit of the theme this year is people getting eagles or eagles-related tattoos. >> that is definitely at the flavor of the weekend, super bowl tattoos, you know. hey, the eagles won. >> what are you getting. >> i'm getting fly and then llii, you know, the super bowl, 52. >> reporter: an eagles tribute. >> it's a tribute. yeah, man you got to mark it. first time ever in the history of the city. you got to do it. >> reporter: today this tattoo convention will go until about midnight and then it will be back here for one more day. that day is tomorrow. we're actually going to head inside in a little bit and see if we can actually find someone in the process of getting one of those eagles tattoos. for now in center city, alycia nieves cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> thank you alycia. other news tonight president trump is going on the offensive after two white house aides resigned amid spousal abuse allegations. tonight the president tweeted

"people's lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation. there's no recovery for someone falsely accused. ." white house secretary rob porter resigned when two ex-wives accused him of abuse. cbs news has learned porter informed john kelly of these accusations. >> a big scramble to try and cover this up or mitigate the situation because they know it's a mess right now. >> yesterday a second white house aide speech writer dave sorensen resigned after a former wife said he abused her during their marriage. sorensen denies those allegations claiming that he, himself, was the victim of physical abuse. chief of staff john kelly has offered to step down amid the scandals. a banquet is the latest sign that relations between north and south korea are thawing during the winter olympics. the south unification ministry hosted a high level delegation from the north. it included north korean leader kim jong un's sister.

un has invited south korea's president to visit the north. in south korea the winter olympics are under way. the two and a half hour opening ceremony kicked off with much fanfare. >> ♪ hundreds of korean drummers and dazzling visuals wowed the crowd. the so-called peace olympics seems to live up to its name as north and south korea marched together under a unified flag. vice president pence watched team u.s.a. in action today. amid the fanfare olympic organizers investigating a possible cyber on their internet and wifi in south korea. officials in pyeongcheng say it happened about 45 minutes before the opening ceremony. local news reports say servers were shut down to prevent damage to technical systems causing problems with the olympic web site. an olympic spokesperson said the athletes and members of the public were not compromised. coming up on "eyewitness

"eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan caught up with the owners who are enjoying every last bite of redemption. >> ♪ fly eagles fly ♪ >> reporter: for some fans the eagles super bowl run was life changing. in case of the collegeville italian bakery it was name changing. for the time vehicle their sign says eagleville. >> you know what, cleve it did wonders for every single mom and pop business to a bar, sports bar, everything. everybody succeeded everybody won and we're just so thankful that it was our year philadelphia eagles year. >> reporter: the sweet taste of the eagles first super bowl championship is that flavored with redemption as it comes at the hands of the new england patriots and for those who bet against us it's time to pay up. the boston area montilos baking company waged one of their sheet case against a tomato my. if the eagles lost the tomato pie would have included a patriots logo. >> that would have killed us.

participants stripped down to their skivvies for the event. the 1 mile run started and ended with a party at world cafe live and isn't runners wore valentine's day themed costumes. meanwhile crowds of brides to be participated in their own tradition in maple shade, new jersey. the running of the brides at good will that's pennsauken store brought out dozens of people trying to get their hands on a wedding discount. 350 brand new designer dresses were up for grabs along with veils, tiaras jewelry and other wedding accessories. the annual fundraiser funds job training programs. as we deal with rainfall here at home look at what saturated sinkhole revealed near austin texas. this hole exposed a 22-foot deep cavern underneath three homes this week. geologists were able to map the cave and say it stretches for 170 feet. i know we're getting a lot of rain, matt but hopefully not that much. >> i hope we don't have any sinkhole problems but it's pretty wild that was right

underneath these people's houses. >> hope they have insurance for that. >> hope so too. we're getting plenty rain. i don't think it's going to be that bad but we have enough that if you're out and about this evening if you haven't left already take the umbrella with you if you're going to be driving around tonight it's going to be wet. we'll be seeing lots of spray on the roads and this is live right now out on spring garden street everybody's got the headlights on, you got the windshield wipers going as well because again we are seeing some rainfall already and it will be picking up as we go through the overnight hours tonight and because we have all of this heavy rain in the forecast for us tonight and throughout the day on sunday we do have a flood watch that is in effect for basically the entire delaware valley, save for really the far northern stretches of the poconos. this goes until midnight on monday night. we're looking for the potential especially across the i-95 corridor of maybe two to even 3-inches of rain so again, flooding is a concern for really about the next 24 hours or so. so storm scan3, a huge system stretches all the way from maine through new york, philly and then back down into the tennessee river valley all the

way down to the bayou of louisiana as well. this is a cold front. it's going to continue to slide eastward and as it does it will bring rain showers even closer to us. storm scan3 again a bit of a zoomed in view here. we're starting to see a little bit of a break in the action for the time being from fill and some of the western sections of the delaware valley but this is going to be a short lived break. you can see down near dover and back down towards baltimore our next round of rain is starting to come in. still seeing in burlington county back down towards toms river as well browns mills some areas of yellow some oranges out there, too and what that is indicative of is some more moderate to maybe even heavy rainfall again still falling in plenty of areas of burlington county. so we're not out of the woods even here this evening just yet. future weather for us will put it into motion for the next couple hours heading into tomorrow morning, by 7 o'clock, widespread showers. doesn't look like we'll see any thunderstorm activity with this bust for the most part just really moderate to heavy rainfall. you see oranges and reds there back down towards wilmington even at 7 o'clock in the morning along that i-95 corridor throughout the entire

afternoon, plenty of heavy pockets of rain so be prepared for that. check out our amounts for the next 24 hours or so. we're looking two to 3 inches of rain from trenton philly back down towards wilmington lancaster as well and then as you head a little bit further away from the i-95 corridor those amounts go down closer to an inch, inch and a half. still plenty of very heavy rain in the forecast for us until the beginning of work week. tomorrow morning 30's from the poconos and parts of the lehigh valley but very mild from philly back down towards the shore points. mid 40's to even around 50. a look at our seven-day forecast, tomorrow afternoon after we wake up in the 40's. we go to a high of 58 degrees with that rain that could be heavy at times. few showers early in the day monday, 47 with sunshine in the afternoon there elects and then as we get into the middle of the week temperatures seasonable maybe even some 50's there for valentine's day. looks like the best day of the week as everybody heads out and enjoys time with their loved one. >> valentine's day, happy to hear that. thank you. lesley van arsdale joins us now following what's been a busy few weeks for

philadelphia sports team. >> yeah it's not just about the eagles. we have other teams here too. sixers just under way against the clippers and joel embiid is in the lineup. he was questionable with a right ankle problem. last night on that problem ankle he came out on fire outscoring the pelicans 16 to 14 finishing with 24 points in 23 minutes. sixers beat new orleans by 18. the last time they played the clippers jo-jo scored 32 points and grabbed 16 boards in the 109-105 win. to college hoops villanova back in action after wednesday night's loss to saint john's against butler. today the bull dogs, butler with the ball and the lead. martin pulls up the three and the bulldogs up by 10. martin with 30 in the contest but the cats come back off the steal jalen brunson with the floater. that goes in. cats down by six. brunson scoring 26. nba 3-pointer right there gives villanova an eight-point

lead. under two minutes left nova with the four-point lead dante coming through again. he had a career high 30 points as villanova beat butler 86 to 75. temple looking for their fifth straight win on the road against south florida. second half owls with the ball. seven-point lead. josh brown three ball from the top of the circle is good. temple leads by 10. later shizz alston makes the 3-pointer to give temple a 17-point lead. alston with the pass to quentin rose in the corner and he drills the triple right there. he led the owls with 20 points. temple shot 50 percent from the field and beat the bulls 73 to 55. to ivy league action penn looking to remain unbeaten in conference play against hartford. quakers down 12. penn down by nine and the crimson come right back. chris lewis hits the shot in the paint right there. he led harvard with 25 points and they snapped the quakers

>> ♪ >> welcome back. many schools across the country celebrate the relationship between girls and their dads with annual dances but not everyone has someone to dance with. that is why some police officers and firefighters stepped in as dates in south salt lake utah. they spent the night at this daddy daughter dance showing offer their best moves. this sergeant says he knows a father's shoes can be difficult to fill. >> when i came walking in here i saw these little girls and it reminded me when i took my little girl. >> it was so great to see the little kids having a good time dancing. >> the girls also got quite a laugh watching their dads firefighters and officers in a hula hooping contest. we'll be back. >> ♪
