approximately how many gidon't know how many injuries, but we know 14 people were transported to area hospitals with varying degrees of wounds. what we'll do is we'll wait for the school to be cleared. we'll go on to the next phase. i know this is critically important. we'll release information to broward county, and we will keep you up to date. but for right now, there is no more information. >> reporter: can you talk about where the shooter was? i know there are a lot of rumors, but at one point... a shooter inside the school. >> he was outside and inside at varying times. he certainly was inside. thank you. >> reporter: in terms of those dead have, the families been notified? >> glor: scott israel, broward county sheriff, giving an update on this shooting at douglas high school in parkland, florida. he did say that, from what he understands, the shooter was found off campus, and that there was no confrontation as far as he was told at the scene of the
5:01 pm
arrest, that is. we did see a shooter, or what police say is the shooter in custody being taken into a patrol car and then -- was put in the patrol car, taken out and put on the stretcher. we watched a few minutes ago what appears to be the suspect then taken from an ambulance on that stretcher into a hospital, as well. the sheriff indicated to us, as others have, that this is a former student who went to the school at what appears to be around the time of dismissal and opened fire. the sheriff said 14 were taken to local hospitals with injuries. he did not elaborate on how many have died at the school, but what we've heard is there have been numerous fatalities. for those of you just joining us
5:02 pm
right now, we are covering this deadly school shooting at a school in south florida. it happened about two and a half hours ago at marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland. that is 20 miles northwest of fort lauderdale about an hour north of miami. the broward county sheriff voterring multiple deaths. 14 people, they say, again, transported to the hospital, the suspect is in custody. the sheriff said it is his understanding that the suspect is a former student and about 18 years old. the sheriff just said he had spoken to president trump. the president tweeted this afternoon, "my prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible florida shooting. no child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an american school ." jeff pegues is with us from washington. he's been watching all of this. jeff, what else do you know? >> to add to what you reported
5:03 pm
there, jeff, i think one of the important points that the sheriff brought up is they're still clearing that building. they think they have all the students outside of the building, but they just want to make sure and that's protocol here. they will go from room to room making sure no one has been left behind, that there are no injured school students or administrators or teachers left behind. that's what they're doing now, so it still is an active scene. it looks like most of the students are out, so that is an important point. then, there are still a lot of questions about what precipitated this, what caused this shooter to do this. investigators will begin, and frankly they've already begun this phase of their investigation, too, trying to figure out what was it that motivated this attack. they will be looking at any computers or cell phones that they can find that were in the custody of this suspect.
5:04 pm
they will look at his social media footprint to see what's there, to see if there are any threats to the school on his social media pages. so that is something that investigators will start to do as well. as you mentioned, jeff, the president has been briefed on this. he's not only reached outo the sheriff there, but he's also reached out to florida governor rick scott. so florida officials have the support of the white house with this, as it continues to unfold. i can't help but think, jeff, having covered many of these situations, i was there at columbine when that unfolded, and right now, as we hear about multiple fatalities, the sheriff didn't get into specifics about that, but there are clearly multiple fatalities here. you have to think about the parents, who aren't being reunited with their kids right
5:05 pm
now, those are parents who, like some of this other parents, may be gathering there at the scene, trying to reunite with their loved ones who were in this school at the time of the shooting, but there will be some parents who will not have those reunions. so there are a lot of people, i'm sure, in florida thinking about those families right now. >> glor: all right, jeff, thank you very much. it is not an easy thought, it never is, to think about what those parents are dealing with tonight, those folks who have not been able to reach their children at this hour. this, from what the broward superintendent said just a short time ago, this appears to have been a shooting that took place around the time of dismissal. we have been told by multiple people that we've talked to on the phone, either who are in the
5:06 pm
school or parents, they've noted that it took place in what they called the freshman building here at douglas high school in parkland, and, as we've both seen from cell phone video from inside the classrooms and from eyewitness descriptions, certainly a good number of rounds fired. ron hoscow with us also in d.c. ron, jeff talked about the number of times we've seen shootings it is perhaps unusual in this case that the suspect has been located alive and that there was, as far as the sheriff said, no confrontation at the scene of that apprehension. >> that has not been the norm.
5:07 pm
very often probably 30% or more, 30, 40% of the time, these active shooter incidents, whether it is a citizen involvement or citizen and then law enforcement confrontation with the subject, there will be a subject suicide or rounds exchanged and the subject ends up dead. so that seems to almost be the norm here where the subject, we don't know yet whether he tried to blend in with fleeing students, which could have certainly been the case, throw down his weapon somewhere, try to look like he is part of the exodus of people fleeing the scene and blend in and make his way home or to some other location. it's going to take some time, but we do tend to see a lot of that subject suicide or subject featly injured by gunfire,
5:08 pm
recall the sutherland springs, texas, church shooting where it was a neighbor that started to pour gunfire at that subject and there was later, i think, a suicide out in a field, as law enforcement started to close in. so that's a little bit unusual and, certainly, law enforcement, this is an opportunity after all this horrific violence, it is an opportunity for law enforcement to have a greater understanding, have a conversation with him, see what he has to say, what motivated him in a way that is uncommon for these incidents. >> glor: ron, you talked earlier about how the police response has changed following previous mass shootings, and that is they become more aggressive, they try to hunt down or find the shooter, whether that shooter is on the scene of a school or has gone somewhere else to try to prevent any further tragedy.
5:09 pm
but how have schools themselves changed their posture when it comes to security in the last ten to 20 years? >> glor: well, i think schools learn from columbine as well. we now see much more commonly more rigorous check-in procedures very often behind double doors, very often behind doors -- there are two sets of doors that are locking so you cannot just walk into an open school and wander through there. we have schools across the country that are looking at and evaluating not only active shooter protocols which include lockdown protocols, but looking at alarms and alert systems that will warn the staff that there is a threat of an active shooter, whether that threat is in the school already or is in a nearby neighborhood because of
5:10 pm
an alert by police, so that we see with increasing frequency where schools are locked down, and i think it is certainly valuable that not only are schools alert to this as a reality across the country, but they're taking steps to defend against it, and that certainly means practice. when i was young, elementary age, i certainly remember the periodic fire alarms -- or fire drills that we had where we would stand up and march out in an orderly fashion, and i'm sure somebody was counting how long it took us to get out there into the playground. this is a different world. so you have the fire alerts, but you also have these sorts of alerts, and if practiced well, it could well be that their prior planning and practice saved lives today. that is certainly the hope, that's the expectation of
5:11 pm
parents is that the school is ready for this sort of eventuality coming to them. >> glor: in this particular case we heard from at least one student that one of these drills or practice session force what they referred to as a code red at this school had just taken place just within the past few weeks. so there were some students, as we've heard, who were saying at the moment that this happened that this may have been just another drill, and, of course, we know by now that that is not the case, unfortunately. ron, as you stay with us here, we have some videotape earlier of some students who just left the school who are talking about what they had seen inside. i don't know if we still have that available.
5:12 pm
>> we thought it was a drill. we actually had a fire drill this morning, so it was very weird to witness that, oh, another one's going off? like, very creepy. like, why is another one going out of? then all of a sudden we hear one of our student government teachers say, run as fast as you can, and we could hear gunshots. >> so there you go, this student saying how there was some sort of drill just this morning followed by, then, what many of these students heard this afternoon, which is that loud gunfire, and then many tried to clear out as quickly as they could. you can only imagine what the situation was like for those students and the teachers as they try to process exactly what to do in those moments, which is why those drills and those rehearsals are so important, so they can try to keep themselves
5:13 pm
safe. we have been watching these images all afternoon for the better par part of now, like, to hours and 40 minutes, and that is paramedics treating the wounded on the scene and the students running as fast as they could to get out of the school. the latest numbers we've heard from broward county sheriff, the 14 have been taken to local hospitals and are injured, and that there are numerous fatalities on the site. jeff pegues also in washington, as we saw what appears to be the suspect taken into a patrol car but taken out and put on a stretcher. >> well, that's right. and, you know, that struck us as unusual in a situation like this. i mean, you know, unfortunately, there have been so many of these that you see these patterns developing, not only leading up to shootings like this, but also in the aftermath of them.
5:14 pm
frankly, in a lot of these cases, the shooters don't survive and, typically, they're found on the school grounds. so what stands out to me is that this suspect was taken into custody, apparently, according to the sheriff th, the next town here e over. as you can see in this video, he was put in a police cruiser, but then shortly taken out and transported to the hospital. >> glor: jeff pegues in our d.c. bureau as we continue following, again, the images you just saw there of the student we talked about being put in the patrol car was from earlier, he was then, as jeff mentioned, taken to the hospital. to recap, the broward county sheriffs tells us there are multiple deaths in marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida. 14 taken to the hospital.
