>> breaking news, massive fire in south philadelphia causing evacuations cents now under control. let's get right out to " eyewitness news" reporter, chantee lans, for the very latest from the scene. chantee, good morning. >> good morning, jan. this fire is under control, but crews will be fighting this for hours and the park commissioner says even more for days. now, there have been fire crews on top of the roof there they've kind of been throwing down pieces of the facade on the front of this historic building, just trying to continue to keep this fire under control. there still are flames in there, according to the fire commissioner, but the good news, again, it is under control, no firefighters hurt. no one, civilians, have been hurt, at least 100 people evacuated from this building and a neighboring hotel called independence park hotel. >> this building at the corner of third street and chestnut street. now, there are some businesses cents on the first floor, little lion is what we are seeing here, and it is a restaurant, been around for at

least a decade. i'm told, also a bar also that has taken a bunch of damage. i spoke with the fire commissioner earlier, he explained how dangerous this is for his crews. >> yes, the firefighters you see here just one aspect of the builds being, we have firefighters literally surrounding this building, inside, outside, adjacent buildings, it is cents a very complex, and very dangerous fire fight. so this is an environment that doesn't necessarily exist anywhere else. you know, we love it, lover the old buildings, lover the history at the same time, very dangerous, very complex for our firefighters but do an amazing job. >> and i also spoke with a septa rep. there is a bus down the street further down chestnut street that is holding many evacuees, who needed a place to be safe and warm. that's the very latest, live in old city, chantee lans, cbs-3, "eyewitness news." >> jan? >> chantee, thank you. our other top story this

morning, of course, was that blast of snow saturday and overnight. but by the time the afternoon gets here today, our latest brush with winter will become a distant memory. the lehigh valley got the most snow out of this system, allentown, with more than 8 inches, flakes also blanketed bethlehem. meantime yesterday evening, the snow came down fast in center city philadelphia. but it turned to sleet then to rain that created slush before the evening was over. it was not the pleasant night for drivers out there. but you could get around as long as you took your time. >> let's get a check on today's forecast now. here is meteorologist, chelsey ingram with eyewitness weather good morning. >> good morning, jan, good morning to everybody else. i mean, it was cents a very fast moving system that rolled on through last night. it was in, it was out, and did leave behind some snow in some locations and some slick spot, that is something to be mindful of. specially if you live north and west of philadelphia this morning, but numbers are on the rise, and i'll take a look at those, first let's take a

live look at the city from across the river there. in is our live neighborhood network camera. you can see abundant sunshine, and that's what we will deal with today. that storm is long, long gone. high pressure is moving in to finish out the weekend. 35 degrees right now in philadelphia. but it is at 32 in wilmington, okay, just came through freezing, was below freezing, so there are some locations, lancaster, for instance, that we could be dealing with some patchy black ice, even some slick spots, now, finally, seeing pottstown above freezing, willow grove above freezing but doylestown you guys still at 31 degrees, just be mine full of that. you have to be on the roads early this morning. heading into the afternoon, by noontime, 42 degrees under mostly sunny skies. temperatures are going to be rebounding very nicely, as we head into the 3:00 hour. high temperature of 48 degrees and we have some 70s on the way, i'll have details in your full forecast in just a few minute. jan? >> yes there is snow will be melting quickly, thank you, chelsey n south jersey now,

a quick blast of snow and poor visibility caused a 70 car pile up on busy interstate in central iowa. the crash here happened just outside of des moines yesterday morning, car parts, littered the road, and dozens of wreck vehicles had to be towed from the scene. now, if this sound familiar, it is because this is the second multi car pile up this stretch of interstate has seen in less than two weeks. fortunately, this time, there was no one who was seriously hurt. we had our own messy mix to deal with last night. >> i know. >> and some of the know came down real fast, so visibility got reduced to very, very quickly with some of the snow bands, that developed, but i think thank goodness the storm was cents in here, out of here now, so dealing with some sunshine today. so, here is a live look at center city where it is right around 35 degrees. but, with the winds out of the west at this hour, about 9 miles per hour, feels more like upper 20's out there when you factor in the windchill. tons of sunshine, sunshine and temperatures above freezing.

really help with the melting process, throughout the day today. storm scan3, shows, that that system that brought us snow last night, that's long gone. pushing off the northeast. eventually into the canadian maritime. so we are dried out here in the mid-atlantic as high pressure briefly builds in. but it is going to be high pressure that provides us with the sunshine, throughout the day today, mostly sunny skies, and it is going to be gorgeous sunday afternoon. 35 degrees right now in philadelphia. thirty-two in wilmington. so temperatures still close to freezing there, in new castle county, just be mindful there could be slick spots on the roadway maybe even patchy black ice, sunshine, warmer temperatures, really help to remedy that situation, very quickly, 31 in reading, 30 in lancaster, so even there, really point north and west of the city we are dealing with temperatures that are at or just below freezing, so that's the a cause for the switch in conditions. looking at whitfield elementary school in reading.

our camera there, see off in the distance, that main road, looking just fine, people then driving along that just fine today. but as you can see in the parking lot getting clear off this morning, so some people having to deal with some snow covered back roads, maybe even some driveways. but you can just let mother nature do her job over the next few days. because we are going to see some really warm air headed our way. reading right around 6.4 inches, for you folks, over 8 inches in allentown, the most impressive number i've seen, green lane around 5.5 inches every snow, under two in hokessing, 1.2 inches of snow at the philadelphia international airport. so future weather shows we stay sunny throughout the entire day. mostly clear skies, as we led into the overnight hours tonight. we start out with sunshine, the morning of president's day , then by about lunchtime couple of scattered showers and sprinkles will be possible , steadier rain, will be arriving as we head into monday afternoon, and actually have few more chances for rain during the upcoming week.

palmyra cove nature park in new jersey, simply beautiful day. we are going to get tons of melting going on as temperatures rise well above freezing. however, there are still a couple of spots out there, that con slick, patchy ice, as well, some patchy black ice, because temperatures are below freezing, in some spots. 32 degrees right now in wilmington, that's an area i'm keeping an eye on, 30 degrees in lancaster, other locations cents have made it above freezing, but as i zoom in a little bit closer you can see doylestown not one of those locations yet. and even willow grove, pottstown, west chester, you folks are still very, very close to freezing, so just be mindful of the road situation, some patchy black ice, and on storm scan three high pressure moving into control. that's going to provide us with the sunshine, throughout the day today. we're well above freezing by none time, 42 degrees, as we head into the 3:00 hour, temperatures rebound so nicely , with a high around 48. 70s in the forecast, this

upcoming week, details in just a few minute, jan. >> sound pretty good, thank you, chelsey, 8:31, an update now on on the breaking news we've been following all morning long, four alarm fire in old city philadelphia is now under control. but happening right now, firefighters are still trying to knock out the hot spots. "eyewitness news" reporter chantee lans is live at the scene, chantee, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jan , yes, it is un control, hot spot we can see from our vantage point. see all of the hoses going in the same direction of this building here. this is a business and an apartment building, which also is attached to a hotel in the citizens bank hotel third and chestnut here in old city. crews have been battling this blaze, since about 3:00 a.m. it is now under control. but there is still a long way to go. they say they'll be out here for days, and i spoke with the fire commissioner, who says, this is a difficult fire to

fight because of the type of structure it is. it is considered a historic building. now, so far, 200 crews have been on scene, that's including emergency management , the red cross, i spoke with evacuees, and now, 100 people at least are going to evacuate between the apartment building and the adjacent hotel. i spoke with one guy who was sleeping at the time. here's what he had to say. >> oh, just our fire alarm went off. you know, i ran into the front , my bedroom in the back, so when i ran in the front i could smell smoke, smoke in our unit all all none, but i look downey could see smoke billowing from the ground floor restaurant next-door to us, so of course immediately evacuated. >> and septa also has a bus set up to keep people safe and warm. he had to be evacuated, again, crews will remain for the

remainder of the day even days to come. that's the very latest live in old sit, chantee lans, cbs-3, "eyewitness news," jan, back to you. >> still a lot of work to be done, thank you, chantee. well, house fire in fox chase that killed one person and injured two firefighters is now under investigation this morning. flames shot from the roof thereof a home at verree road and fans street, late last night. crews fought that fire for over an hour, in the driving snow before bringing it under control. we're told that the firefighters injured are being treated for minor injuries. >> four philadelphia firefighters killed battling the great fire of 1899 were remembered in center city. the annual firefighters memorial mass was held at saint john the evangelist church near 13th and market yesterday. firefighters duffy, chance, steinly and shea were all remembered. they gave their lives battling

flames at bern saint john's and several other buildings, flowers were placed on their memorial plaques. outrage and anger continues today over the valentine day shooting spree at a high school in florida. fourteen student and three faculty members were killed at a large rally yesterday, several student from the school made sure their voices cents were heard. cbs news correspondent jericka duncan was there. >> we going to be the last mass shooting. >> emma gonzalez joined the chorus of people at this anti- gun rally in fort lauderdale. >> we are going to change the law. and it is all going to be due to the tireless effort of the school boards, faculty members , family members, most importantly the student. the student their they're demanding change to our nation 's gun laws, to stop people like the alleged shooter, 19 year old nicholas cruz. >> you think it will happen again? >> the fact that we are speaking out this time, i just really hope it makes a difference. >> on friday, the fbi admitted

to receiving a tip last month from someone close to cruz who claimed cruz had spoken about commit ago school shooting. >> the potential of the fbi to miss something is always there we do our best. we have consumer protocols for these things, we will be looking into where and how if the protocol broke down. >> cruz no stranger to law enforce: broward county sheriff records revealed 20 calls for service during the past few years over disturbances involving cruz and his younger brother. the report obtained by cbs news shows that on september 28th, 2016, police were on the scene with the department of children and families, to check on the health and well-being of nicholas cruz, the report said he suffers from mental illness , he has been cutting his arm, his mother said, to get attention. it goes on to say: he has mentioned in the past that he would like to purchase a firearm. classmates say they were well aware that cruz was a danger.
