i'm ukee washington. >> i'm jessica dean. there were so many people affected by this fire and right now they're trying to figure out their next step. >> eyewitness news reporter david spunt is at the scene right now where investigators are still working to find the cause of the fire. david? >> reporter: hi, ukee. it's been almost 48 hours still an active scene because there is concern about the collapse of 239 chestnut street. i'm going to back out of the way right now. i did have a chance to speak with a man who has lived in this building for more than 40 years. he has lost everything to this devastating fire. >> it's been awful and it's been very hard to think about it, deal with it, think it through. >> reporter: al is living a nightmare. his live at 239 chestnut gone. he moved in 40 years ago. 40 hours after flamed ripped through his apartment building, firefighters were on scene putting out hot spots with water. the inferno began sunday

morning. the fifth floor collapsed. a professor lost his pet cats and art studio. >> i had my own five cats and for at least 12 years worked for the philadelphia animal welfare society as a foster parent. >> reporter: the restaurant next door is closed until further notice. a block away employees at city tavern are getting ready to welcome those displaced. the manager at city tavern says when he heard about the destruction down the street, he knew opening his doors was the right thing to do. city tavern once closed because of a fire. >> help people get back to work whether it's temporary or permanent, we would like to help out. >> reporter: the first floor of 239 chestnut was most recently a restaurant called revolution

diner. neighbors tell eyewitness news the owner was evicted a few months ago. >> i'm so grateful and so touched by all of this. people that i don't even know have been approaching me or sending things. >> reporter: a friend created a go fund me page, almost $50,000 we have a link on cbsphilly.com. the atf investigating right now. city officials recommend tearing down 239 chestnut but they hope to preserve the facade. the build suggest from the early 1950s. david spunt, cbs3 eyewitness news. >> the cause remains under investigation for this fire which ripped through a south jersey ambulance company. firefighters responded around 4:00 this morning. crews reported hearing four explosions as oxygen tanks in those ambulances exploded. six ambulances were destroyed.

that's all but one of the association's entire fleet. >> we're going to take a little time to recover. it's very hard emotionally. but with the support of everybody, we're going to go on. >> the ambulance association's president has been getting calls from other associations offering their truck toss serve the community. >> we could be nearing record temperature territory over the next couple of days. we're talking 70s in february. meteorologist kate bilo is here to talk about the warm-up and the concern of fog in the morning hours. >> fog even starting now but intensifying through the morning hours. it's part and parcel of the warm-up we're talking about. we've got a warm front that has just lifted north of our region. that's what brought us the showers today.

we're now in the warmth sector of the storm here. in the southeastern grad rant of the storm. that's what's creating the fog especially the areas that have a snow pack on the ground, the ground is cold, fog forms and we are seeing fog form extensively tonight as that warm air lifts in. it's a taste of may tomorrow into wednesday we're talking temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above average. right now you can see temps are slowly rising across especially the southern parts of the region. 47 degrees here in philadelphia and 38 in allentown and reading. temps on their way up but again the fog is forming especially from the city north and west. we've got visibilities in under a mile. i'll tell you how bad it will be when you wake up and we'll talk about the records that will fall as well. >> the pennsylvania supreme court imposes a new

congressional district map for the common wealth 2018 elections. the majority democrat state supreme court demanded changes to the map. it ruled that the congressional districts boundaries were unconstitutional because they favored gop candidates. the new map will take effect in time for the may 15th primary. the new backgroundries could improve democrats' chances of winning seats. we talked with the chair of the pennsylvania republican party tonight who says a legal challenge to this new map is in the works. >> this wasn't really about drawing compact and contiguous lines in accordance with the supreme court's discussion. this was about drawing more democrat seats which is what they've done. gerrymander is is what people are complaining about and now the supreme court is engaging in that very type of activity. >> the democratic party had this to say. for too long republicans have taken advantage of a notoriously

gerrymandered map that they rigged in their favor. we applaud the fairness map. >> investigators in florida are learning more about the 19-year-old they believe killed 17 people at a school in parkland, florida last week. this as students pressed for tighter gun control measures from lawmakers in washington and president trump himself. >> reporter: nikolas cruz made his second appearance in a broward county court monday. >> it doesn't matter which stage, which country. no one should have to go through this devastation. >> reporter: newly released documents reveal in september 2016 an investigator with the state's department of children and families visited the cruz household. the investigators noted cruz has depression, adhd and autism. that he cut his arms in a snapchat post and that he plans

to go out and buy a gun. >> this wasn't the person that we knew. >> reporter: the couple who took the 19-year-old in after his mother's death in november sat down with abc news earlier in the day. >> before he moved in one of the stipulations was he had to get a gun safe and we got a gun safe on the way back from moving his stuff to our house. >> reporter: angry over what they view as inaction in washington, dozens of teenaged students staged a die-in on the payment in front of the white house calling for gun reform. >> we don't believe this comes down to politics. it comes down to children in classrooms. >> reporter: the white house says president trump is open to the possibility of supporting bipartisan legislation to strengthen the background check system. he plans to hold a listening session with high school students and teachers at the white house wednesday. we have also learned the florida legislature is preparing a sweeping package of legislation. it includes new age restrictions on gun purchases, a ban on bump stocks and gun risk protection

orders allowing police to take guns away from people believed to be threats. also tonight we are hearing from a marjory stoneman douglas high school student who has ties to our area. a junior at the school took shelter in a classroom with others, lights off laying on the ground to make it look like the classroom was empty. her aunt is from delaware and put us in touch via face time. at times recounting that day was too much to bear. her close friend almost died. >> she got hit i think more than three times. her right lung collapsed and she had five broken ribs. >> lila also lost two people she was close to in that shooting. >> philadelphia police are looking for a young suspect

trying to enter a school. the suspect was captured on video last thursday. at the time the doors of the school were locked. police believe the suspect is between 13 and 16 years of age. police hope someone can help them track down the suspect seen in this video. they say he attacked a pregnant woman in chinatown. it happened saturday morning. according to authorities the suspect kicked the woman who was five months pregnant in the stomach. they say he asked her for $2 then attacked her when she said she didn't have any money. >> philadelphia police have released new video of super bowl parade celebrations that resulted in destruction. the surveillance footage shows several people causing a bus shelter to collapse. on the corner of 15th and jfk boulevard. fergie is speaking out about her performance.

a taco bell restaurant in philadelphia is in hot water tonight after a cashier allegedly used a racial slur on a customer's receipt. when he got his receipt it allegedly included a slur where his name should have been. lee says the cashier apologized after he confronted him. but later lee says he heard other employees laughing about

it and using the slur. >> that's when i got really upset and i stopped eating, put my food down and decided to go to the counter. basically cussed them out. >> reporter: lee says the manager did approach him but also told him waes disrespectful when he ripped the food out of the cashier's hands. to being obell released a statement regarding the incident. we do not tolerate this behavior. the franchisee is looking into this matter and will take swift and appropriate action. kfc has run out of chicken in britain forcing the chain to close hundreds of restaurants there. it turns out the chain switched delivery companies to dhl and things didn't go so well. dhl blames operational issues. ♪ o say can you see by the dawn's early light ♪

>> kate's here now with record warmth on its way. it's going to feel like baseball season it's going to feel like may or june than february. we've got temperatures headed into the 70s tomorrow and they'll stay there through wednesday, a couple of records may fall. one of the things we were talking about at the top of the show is the fog. that's kind of an unintended problem with the warmth. you've got the fog forming and it's going to be with us for the next couple of nights. mainly overnight as the ground cools and the warm air flows over top of it, it is getting foggy as you can see right now. the tops of the buildings completely shrouded in fog and if you're heading out tonight or early tomorrow morning in your commute, take it slow. the taillights of the car in front of you can very much come up on you quickly in conditions like this. we'll take you up to the poconos and see the fog is in place.

it's currently 36 degrees. the pattern shows the warmth front to the north, cold front to the west. we're talking about temperatures 20-30 degrees above average for the next couple of days here looking at clear skies for now. we've got the showers moving away. skies clear but you're not able to really see the skies clear because the fog keeps you from seeing much of anything at all. temperatures holding steady or slightly rising overnight. it's 48 in the city, 50 in millville, 55 in dover and winds are coming in out of the southwest. you can see a big bubble of warmth. you can see where the cold front is as well. that distinct lines across the plains and the midwest. right now we're seeing 60s columbus, nashville, st. louis and that's the rain headed our way tomorrow and into wednesday. overnight we're going see visibility near zero. dense fog socked in all night long even into the first part of your commute tomorrow morning. 7:00 a.m. look at that fog.

it is going to be dangerous out there for travelers tomorrow morning. take it slow you need to leave extra time. i know you don't want to wake up earlier than you have to but you may want to leave a little earlier tomorrow the fog will slow you down. it clears up by midday, the sun comes out and temperatures are off to the races. tomorrow 71, the record is 70 from 1939. 75 is the forecast high on wednesday. the record is 72. tomorrow's dry morning fog then afternoon sun the front does approach wednesday. rain chances increase as colder air returns late in the week thursday and friday. so tonight we drop down to a low temperature pretty much where we are right now, 49 degrees. temps rising overnight and tomorrow is a warm day. 71 degrees. warmest since early november. wednesday 75 breaking that next record. it's cooler thursday and friday with the chance for rain. the weekend is not all that cold but it's also not all that nice. we'll have rain chances both
