good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. florida legislators expect to consider tougher gun-control laws that could include raising the age to buy any gun to 21. 19-year-old nikolas cruz legally bought the gun police say he used to kill 17 people at his former high school. students at marjory stoneman douglas high school are urging lawmakers to take action. meanwhile, the family that took had cruz is defending their decision to allow him to move in with about half a dozen guns. hena doba is here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that family that was housing cruz say they brought the teen in was because it was the right thing to do, his mother having just died. meanwhile, 100 marjorie stoneman students are bussing hundreds of miles to florida's capital to urge lawmakers to put an end to

a repeat of the massacre that killed 17 students and faculty. as accused high school shooter nikolas cruz appeared in front of a judge yesterday for a second time, the family that had been housing him was speaking out. james and kimberly sneed insist cruz showed no warning signs that he was about to do harm to himself or others. >> he had a positive, positive path going. he was going to school. he had a job. he told us two weeks ago the happiest he's ever been. >> reporter: when cruz moved into their home with around half a dozen guns, their only stipulation -- that he keep them locked in a gun safe. >> i had guns. i respect guns. as long as they're handled properly, which is the right to own a gun. >> reporter: cruz owned the guns legally. a florida judge yesterday authorized the release of his records that indicate he had multiple mental health concerns including severe depression and

adhd. at vigils and protests across the country, many are calling for tighter regulations to prevent those with mental health issues from buying a gun. >> it comes down to children in classrooms who are being shot. >> reporter: at this line outside the white house, dozens of high schoolers from teens for gun reform posed as corpses. students from parkland plan to rally at the state capitol this week. >> we feel like the politicians on both sides, but mostly the gop who are accepting money from the nra, are betting on our lives. and they're betting against us. >> reporter: the white house says president trump will host a listening session tomorrow with both students and teachers. and cruz faces 17 counts of premeditated murder. his lawyers say he will plead guilty if prosecutors agree not to pursue the death penalty. >> hena doba here in new york. thank you very much, hena. some city leaders in dallas want the national rifle

association to move its annual meeting somewhere else. the nra plans to hold its yearly event at the dallas convention center in may. there are leadership meetings, gun exhibits, and sales. council member dwayne carraway called the event inappropriate after last week's school shooting. in a statement, the nra said, "dallas, like every other american city and community, is populated by nra members. no politician anywhere can tell the nra not to come to their city. we are already there." in the wake of the florida school shooting, the white house says president trump supports stronger background checks for gun purchase. the president talked to senator john cornyn about a measure that he introduced that would enhance state and federal records sharing with the fbi. the measure has bipartisan support. its fate remains unclear. mitt romney thanked president trump for his support in the utah race. he's running to replace orrin

hatch. romney and mr. trump have not always seen eye to eye. in 2016, the president said romney choked like a dog when he ran against president obama. romney called president trump a phony who was unfit for office. in his tweeted endorsement, the about the said "romney will make a great senator and worthy successor to orrin hatch, and has my full support and endorsement." we are learning more about russian interference in the u.s. election. according to an indictment released friday, the effort has been traced back to a so-called troll factory in st. petersburg. elizabeth palmer spoke with a former insider. >> reporter: on this street, there was a "for rent" sign in the window. this building says the u.s. indictment was a busy troll factory set up to influence u.s. voters. the russian foreign minister denied the kroemlin was involve. "where is the evidence," he asked. but this woman saw it with her

own eyes. in 2015 she went undercover and got a job at the troll factory writing fake news in russian. this shaky video is the only glimpse she has now of the operation, but she says "we knew there were people working," in english, and their work was absolutely secret. it consisted of posts ridiculing hillary clinton and fanning the flames of divisive issues in the u.s. when ludmilla saw the english posts, she recognized them right away as the work of the trolls. "they use the same techniques that we did," she told us. the troll factory's boss was yevgeny preghozyn. known as putin's chef he originally made his money in high-end restaurants. that's him serving george w. bush at a state dinner. the u.s. indictment doesn't make a direct link between the troll factory and the kremlin. but the ultimate insider has

made millions from russian government contracts. there is no doubt, ludmilla says, that the factory worked for russia. here at the kremlin it's dangerous to put on that kind of power. are you worried about yourself? sprang up after 17 students were gunned down at marjory stoneman douglas high school. cassandra shank says her 14-year-old daughter goes through active shooter drills four times a year. a move her school implemented after sandy hook, the massacre of 20 first graders and 6 staff members sparked similar outrage, but no change in federal gun laws. >> if it didn't happen with sandy hook, why is it going to happen now? >> i don't have an excuse for that. should be ashamed. >> reporter: shanks believes the latest shooting is different since the loudest voices are from students -- the once most affected. >> i don't think they're going to let us get less mad. they're going to force us to stay mad. >> reporter: the kids are? >> the kids are. i think that mean the images have to stay fresh in our minds. it means we have to stay in this place, so be it. >> reporter: and you think there needs to be change in terms of gun laws? >> 100%. i believe this has to be a breaking point. >> reporter: this time, they say, laws will change because they vow never to let those images of pain and loss fade
