defeats canada in a suspenseful overtime shoot-out. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, it was day of protests and pleas. angry students and parents confronted politicians demanding new gun laws. others staged walkouts. they now say they may consider a call for raising the age limit to buy a rifle. in washington, students and others affected made an emotional plea to president trump who held notes with the message "i hear you" written in black marker. hena doba is here in new york. hena, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. exactly one week after the deadly shooting in florida students spent the day demanding action on gun control. a town hall overnight got

especially uncomfortable for at least one prominent senator. from tallahassee to washington, d.c., students who survived last week's high school shooting spent the day putting the heat on politicians to take action on gun control. >> senator rubio, can you tell me right now you will not accept a single donation from the nra? >> senator rubio would not commit to turning down money from the nra where students and parents from marjorie stoneman douglas high school questioned lawmakers. rubio did say he would support legislation to raise the limit on those who can purchase a rifle. >> that's something i'm willing to consider. >> earlier in the day president trump met with students and parents from douglas high school, sandy hook, and columbine. >> how is it that easy to buy that type of weapon.

>> how did we not stop this after columbine and sandy hook. i'm sitting with a mother that lost her son and it's still happening. >> mr. trump spoke of strengt n strengthening background checks and arming teachers. >> if you had a teacher who was adept with firearms -- >> they're calling for changes to gun laws. around 100 survivors of last week's shooting were among them. and a spokesperson for the nra was also at the town hall spoke of flaws in the system. she aso pointed a finger at law enforcement for not doing more to act on red flags raised by the alleged shooter leading up to the attack. anne-marie. the national rifle association rejected the idea of raising the age limit for buying a rifle.

federal law prohibits those under the age of 21 from purchasing a handgun. in a statement the nra said passing the law that makes it illegal for someone at 18 to purchase a rifle deprives them of the right for protection. ahead on "cbs this morning" we'll talk with a women who talked to police. pover a large part of the county from the plains to the northeast. there are flood warnings and advisories from texas to west virginia, an area which could see multiple waves of rain. in northern indiana residents had to evacuate their homes as the water rose. the mayor of elkhart says his city hasn't seen flooding like this in 45 years. in irl south of chicago drivers stranded in standing water had to be rescued. graham is being remembered as the most widely heard

february 22nd, 1980, this exact date back then, we witnessed the miracle on ice. that's when the u.s. men's hockey team ended the soviet union's run of four straight olympic gold medals. today it was the u.s. women's hockey team's turn ending canada's run atop the podium. >> she scored earlier. >> reporter: it all came dune to this. 20-year-old maddie rooney's spectacular shoot-out gave them olympic gold against their archrival canada. just a few seconds earlier, jocelyn lam rew scored the exciting goal. >> it was amazing. it lives up to my expectations, past my expectations. it was amazing. >> team usa jumped up looking for its first hockey medal since 1998. the americans were looking for redemption against a canadian team that had won 24 straight

olympic games over a 20-year span. even before leaving for south korea, hana brandt talked about it. >> i think our motivation is so high. with everybody on the team wanting the same thing so badly, it's going to be hard to stop us. >> reporter: canada took the lead in the second period but america tied it at two apiece with six seconds left in the game. >> there wasn't going to be another frustration this year. these girls are crazy. they know what they're doing. >> reporter: the u.s. victory ends canada's streak of four straight olympic gold medals. and maddie rooney, that goaltender, getting plenty of love on social media right after this game. there was one screen shot someone showing her on wikipedia

to make sure there's a human behind it. u.s. ne"u.s. news & world r says a u.s. advisory panel gave the okay to use a nasal spray flu vaccine again. two years ago the panel pulled "i" recommendation for flu mist after it found it was ineffective against swine flu. the company that makes the mist says the problem has been fixed. it could be an option for the next flu season. the recommendation now goes to the cdc. britain's "guardian" reports on jennifer lawrence wearing a dress sexist. critics said she was being mistreated. lawrence said she was extremely offended and it was her choice not to cover up the dress. and the los angeles teams says an amateur astronomer testing a new camera happened to

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch," reports of new tlubl for toys "r" us, and uber's new cost-saving option. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. january meeting found they believe the outlook for the u.s. and global economy is positive. that raised expectations for more interest rate hikes this year. that ripple sent stocks lower. the dow lost nearly 167 points. the s&p 500 was down 15 points and the nasdaq was down 16 points lower.

the annual report was released yesterday. the group praises the effects of tax overhaul and growth rate. the cea says the economic agenda enacted, the nation's growth rate will increase 3%. more toys are us stores will close. they'll also lay off a significant portion of its corporate staff. they recently announced it was closing about 180 stores affecting about 4,500 workers. the journal also reports the company has pulled back on offering service to all. >> a top executive at ford has been fired following allegations of unspecified behavior. raj nair is leaving ford

immediately. in a company statement nair said he regretted he's not exhibited leadership behavior consistent with company principles. uber is introducing a service to link riders to the same service who want to go to the same place. they'd have to walk a few blocks to a common location to be picked up. they'd be dropped off. it would cost 75% less than a regular uber ride. and "dinosaur" fans, take note universal pictures announced a third installment. our top stories this morning. more rain is expected in the upper midwest where severe flooding is forcing evacuations. some residents in northern indiana had to be rescued from their homes. the storm has been blamed for hundreds of car crashes and several fatalities this week. and angry florida students including survivors of last week's deadly shooting went to the state capitol demanding changes in gun laws. at an emotional town hall meeting florida senator marco rubio would not commit to turning down money from the nra. they talked about strengthening

background checks. facebook and youtube are facing criticism for the spread of one of the most outspoken students. >> david hogg reported what was happening as he and the classmates were hiding. >> the grieving students turned to put an end to this. >> reporter: soon after he became one of the most prominent voices for stricter gun laws, he was labeled a fachlkt one conspiracy used an interview he gave on an unrelated story while visiting california last year as evidence he was a paid actor. the top searches for him ranged from can't remember his lines and exposed. >> i'm not a clinton employee or actor. i am a witness to this. >> reporter: hogg joined his fellow students in tallahassee.
