♪ >> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". we begin this noon with shots fired at a van carrying women and children. the driver was killed and she may have been an innocent vict victim. five others including three young children survived a frightening ordeal that ended with a violent crash. good afternoon i'm jim donovan. >> i'm rahel solomon. "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos is live now at police headquarters and greg, what are police saying right now about this case? >> reporter: rahel, they're saying that this happened around 8:30 last night in the fern rock section of philadelphia. this afternoon detectives are working the scene there in the

fern rock second they're looking for two men they say fired those five shots. a bizarre shooting in the fern rock section of philadelphia. around 8:30 last night, here at the 5800 block of old york road, five shots rang out. striking this white conversion van. inside the driver, a 23-year-old woman, two other women in their 20s and three kids. >> three children under the age of four. >> reporter: the driver shot in the head. medics pronouncing her dead at the scene. thursday detectives searching for the killers. >> right now at this minute we just have descriptions of two males wearing gray hoodies two black males wear gray hoodies that fled from the location. the men fled on foot. he says this does not appear to be a case of road rage and the suspects may have simply been innocent victims. >> again, early stages a lot to be developed, um, we don't believe the occupants had anything to do with anything. we don't believe they were a tar g we don't believe it was road

rage. >> reporter: now as for the other five folks in that van, those two other women and the three children, they were injured in the crash. fortunately they were not struck by any of those bullets. we're told they are going to be okay. right now investigators searching for surveillance video of this crime we'll have the latest tonight cbs3 "eyewitness news" at 5:00. i'm live here at police headquarters, greg argos, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> all right, greg, thank you. chopper three over water rescue in claymont new castle county a person some type of construction equipment fell into the delaware river at around 10:00 this morning. this happened near an industrial site on the 6200 block of philadelphia pike. officials are calling this an active recovery effort. crews investigate two manhole explosions on the 300 block of mark street. the explosions happened just after 9:00 a.m. now, workers from philadelphia gas works and peco energy are on the scene between second and fourth streets. parts of market street are closed while they work to determine what happened. no injuries were reported.

crews are battling a three alarm commercial fire in southwest philadelphia. chopper three over pasco metal recycling on island and pasco avenues. you can see the smoke and flames. this broke out around 9:40 this morning. right now no word on any injuries or a cause. well a week after deadly high school shooting in florida president trump continues the conversation about school safe safety. today the president is meeting with local lawmakers and officials after discussion with students, parents tenches on gun control yesterday. here's more on the president's proposals. >> reporter: president trump continues his listening sessions with people from cities impacted by gun violence. today he's talking with state and local officials including the mayor of parkland, florida, site of last week's school shooting. >> we lost 17 lives. but the ripple effects throughout the community are devastating. report roar wednesday, he sat down with students, parents and teachers who have experienced school shootings. >> i'm pissed because my

daughter i'm not going to see again. i lost the best friend. >> people are dying and we have to stop this. i'm just begging for a change. >> while the president mostly listened did he say he wants to focus on several solutions including strengthening background checks, increasing mental health service and arming school staffers who have begun training. >> if you had a teacher with, hooks was a dept at firearms they can very well end the attack very quickly. >> reporter: president trump's suggestion of arming certain teachers was met with resistance both in the room and on the social media. mark's son danielle was killed inside sandy hook elementary schools. >> school teachers have more than enough responsibilities right now than to have to have the awesome responsibility of lethal force to take live. >> reporter: president trump defended his call forearming trained teachers tweeting, a gun free school is a magnet for bad people. attacks would end. >> cbs3 "eyewitness news".

meanwhile students are taking a stand against gun violence from coast to coast. today they're gathering even right here in west philadelphia to demonstrate the toll that guns take on our communities. cleve bryan is live on the campus of university of pennsylvania. cleve? >> reporter: rahel, we have easily over a hundred students here now lining the locust walkway on the campus here at penn. they started organizing earlier this week online talked about want to go get together to do something to show solidarity with all those young people across the country that have been speaking up against gun violence since the massacre in park land, florida. now, they're holding these white signs and each of those signs is an event, mass shooting event from january of last year until present day. and so they're lining the walkway here reminding all the other students and bringing awareness to the fact that it's not just one of them. these are events that keep happening over and over again. in fact, little bit they're

going to have a moment of silence for each victim that has died since january of last year in mass shooting events. they'll hold 497 seconds of silence more than eight minutes and i talked to some of the student leader as little while ago about why they're so passionate at this time about making a stand. >> i think for young people it can be really frustrating, it can be hard because you're up against a lot of power, a lot of money, and especially for kids under the age of 18 you don't really have any power in politics, um, but i think the -- the survivors the teenagers in florida showing us that by going to tal mass has see and demanding answers from their elected figures just because they're young people, thecal still have to be listened to regardless. >> reporter: one of thingso me i was talking to some of the student leaders they said, all throughout high school and even younger, they grew up in this

culture of being prepared for active shooters. they had to do active shooter drills all the time growing up through school and i can remember my own growing up during the time of columbine being in high school that being such a new thing but this is the norm for a lot of these people that are now in college and younger. so they want to speak up. they want to make sure that legislators state level and at the federal level know where they stand and that's for change and so we'll be here for little bit. this protest will continue for the next half hour or so. we're live at the campus at pe penn. cleve bryan cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> definitely interesting perspective there, cleve. thank you. want the us supreme court to block the state new congressional district map that presiding officers the state house and senate filed request with justice samuel alito they argue the state supreme courte courtesies legislative authority when it issue the map. state supreme court rule the previous map was and constitutional because it was gerrymandered to benefit republicans. new map is seen as potentially beneficial to democrats. funeral plans have been

ounced for the man known as america's pastor the reverend billy graham. public may spay pay their respects at the billy graham library in charlotte north carolina on monday and tuesday. next friday he'll be laid to rest beside this wife on the property. he died yesterday at the age of 99 he passed away peacefully in his sleep at home. a local doctor is being recognized for his service to vulnerable communities in philadelphia and abroad. the pennsylvania medical society presented doctor wayne lau with every day hero award in center city today. the doctor is an emergency medicine physician with jefferson hospital. a colleague nominated him for selflessly serving his patients. dr. lau volunteered his services at a clinic in chinatown over the past decade and he also volunteers on international trips to china. congratulations. on the reading terminal mark is the place to be today as the venue and its vendors celebrate the markets 125th birthday. throughout the day merchants will randomly select customers

reporting that new jersey based toys r us is planning to close another 200 stores and lay off a significant portion of its corporate staff. the journal is also reporting that the company has pulled back from a promise to offer severance to all affected workers. the announcement comes after diss apartment pointing holiday season for that retailer. a new social media trend making hobby lobby a very popular place. this is called the hobby lobby challenge. people going to the store pass plastic file knauer aisle and take pictures to make it look like they're part in professional garden shoot. hobby lobby workers not fans apparently. many have taken to social media to express their frustration. they say people doing the challenge get in the way and often don't even buy bother to put the flowers back where they belong. >> you hear that katie put back the flowers! back on "eyewitness news" this noon. flood waters are forcing people out of their home. rivers swollen by heavy rain and melting snow overflowing their banks in indiana, michigan and

other parts of the midwest. american red cross says eight shelters now open in northern indiana where crews used boats to help residents evacuate their homes. in michigan state of emergency was declared in the lansing ar area. katie joining us now. it seems like it was just yesterday it was so beautiful out. >> in fact it was. >> in fact it was. [ laughter ] >> yes. my gosh talk about what a difference even just 24 hours can make. we're talking about 35-degree drop off just from yesterday afternoon. >> oh boy. >> to this afternoon wait until you see the 24 hour departure. >> oh no. >> it's incredible. nothing, you know, that we've never seep before. but we do have some all-time record warmth we were able to set yesterday in a couple of towns which we'll get to. let's start things by taking a view who high a top hotel bethlehem overlooking a very dreary beginning to the afternoon northa northampton con bethlehem we overlook main street. the traffic moving kind of slow. i would not be shocked if that's due to the rain moving that was here. take look at the radar in a second let's go back in time and

recall what that warmth was all about yesterday. now this is not just daily records we're talking about but allentown reading and trenton you had all time record warmth for the month of february. in all three cities the numbers orange was hit yesterday. 82 degrees in reading pa yesterday. again, that's a new one for the books. for all time record warmth in the month. now, here's that hurts to look at difference in the last 24 hours at least 20 degrees but even more than that out towards reading, up to where you were in to the 80s yesterday. wire not coming anywhere close to that at this pope these are actual temperatures. 39 from 82 degrees. tough stuff. but that temperature likely to om drop off simply because we're still waiting for the really cold air to come in here many you're still at 50 degrees in millville as the cold is still penetrating our region you can see where the front has lined up very very well here. in birmingham it's 77. nashville it's 20 degrees

colder. so that's where that temperature is beginning to fall off as the colder air moves in. you've also got wet weather to go along with it when you look at this wide zoom there's a couple of things to notice. here's the cold front still trying to move through in our area but there's a new system already and its heels getting its act. basically what happens is you have this conveyor belt in short that starts to pick up with front after front system after system moving through today. today it's technically a cold front. come friday it's technically a warm front that brings in the rain and then come this weekend, another system is still trying to push through. you basically have waves of low pressure moving along what's essentially a stationary frontal boundary that will just keep things very unsettled here locally right through the weekend. then finally that giant h that mix so happy to see that moves back in high pressure in short that will eventually bring back the sunshine but it had take couple of days. now, storm scan locally is primarily just smattering very light showers here and there. you go far enough north you see

a little pink right on the tail end of that loop up in carbon county because the air is turning cold enough later and today with temperatures just continue to go drop off, there's actually winter weather advisory that goes into effect at 4:00 p.m. after coming such a warm afternoon yesterday. goes to show how things can really change on a dime for us but that winter weather advisory is posted for carbon, monroe the rest of the poconos. headed up that way watch for slick travel. sleet and freezing rain the primary issue there so there could be a glaze of ice on the roads. now, overlooking center city philadelphia let me step over here you can still -- well, just barely make it out. it's somewhere there in the haze. visible may be reduced out the there. certainly if you're driving through the rain that will slow you down too. when we look at the seven day, okay, so the temperatures are kind of all over the place you do do eventually warm up right through sunday rain is in our forecast. as i mentioned earlier in the show i do think you'll see the wettest time frame especially saturday night into the first half of sunday. but sunday is mild day at least. and then the sun comes back in
