5:32 am
different kind of location- based forecast that is have to take place, even for the relatively small delaware valley here. just leads to a very forecast. storm scan3, storm starting to wrap up now it looks like nor'easter, right? before it look more like typical coast-to-coast mid latitude cyclone, now wrapping up and intensifying as we speak just off shore. do you see that little curvature just offer to the right of atlantic city? that's the main core of circulation right, there so nearby, and as the cold air is being generated by this, the wind will also start to pick up, the change-over already starting to take place up in the lehigh valley, more specifically the poconos for any rain over to snow. so you're getting underway now folks in the poconos. with the heavy snow, that we have been expecting. so, there is winter storm warning now winter weather advisory, where you're going to end up with the best and most beef i totals of snow from this storm. a look at or not temperature,
5:33 am
i just love the way there is this vortex of wind barw off shore, really painting great picture of how this is intensifying, 42 the current temperature at the airport, low 40's, region wide, so cold but still too warm for anything but rain in most spots. let's talk winds, high wind warning, going into effect technically at 10:00 a.m., but already starting to see some pretty decent gusts, but we expect the peak gusts up to 60 e strongest of which come during unfortunately the pm drive. i worry about downed trees, downed tree limbs, power lines , coming down with this a very intense storm with regard to win. >> it is going to be a mess, already, seeing that out on the roadways, just with accident pack your patience, going need to do so today. >> near welsh rd., waiting for the accident to clear, especially before we new that volume levels would start to pick up t has cleared.
5:34 am
>> good news, now that the accident has moved out of the way, volume is not an issue, 202, county line road, we can certainly see how crumby it is looking out here, see just all of the wet roadways, the rain still coming down, but also, looking at all of that pooling and when we get that pooling on the roadways, we know hydroplaning can be certainly an issue, accident here, still out there, roosevelt boulevard northbound at whitaker avenue, the inner lanes blocked there, and another accident in delaware, still out there, 95 north at 495 north, involving a tractor-trailer and fuel spill. three lanes are block there, rahel, jim, over to you. >> meisha, thank you. well case of bad timing at the jersey shore. >> coastline is bracing for another nor'easter, as beaches undergo repairs from previous storms. "eyewitness news" reporter trang do, live in brigantine, trang, how are the waves right now? >> jim, rahel, you can see, i have an umbrella now, so the rain is really picking up here , some heavy rain, you can
5:35 am
hear the waves pretty good over here. but take a look, let me show you, because i know this umbrella is here, but good amount of pounding on the beach here. we are seeing crews here early , into that big light over there, they are working, to prepare this beach for this coastal storm they began this work last night, we have video that far, take a look, adding more sands to the beach to serb of as buffer here in brigantine, because they are concerned about flooded roadways here. also, of concern, the high winds, and so there are big concerns about power outages that could potentially happen. atlantic city electric is warning customers to really anticipate these outages, so they've power, and emergency crews on stand by throughout the weekend. >> we'll see what the storm bridges and we do ask customers prepare, for the possibility of outages. if there is extended outages to have three day supply of
5:36 am
non-perishable wood and bottled water and finds safe location that does have power beforehand in the event do you lose power, especially if you have medical equipment and need steady power to operate. >> now, all very good advice, you can see here, on the beach , in brigantine, those flags, winds are really picking up, atlantic city electric also has contractor crews on stand by to deal with any falling tree limbs, also have some of their sister crews, waiting to see if they'll be needed but for now live in brigantine, trang do, cbs-3, "eyewitness news," jim and rahel, back to you feeling the effect of the nor'easter right now in our region. >> winds and rain, but later today expecting snow. "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo live along kelly drive with the latest on conditions there, and the last time we spoke to you you said it was misting, and what's the scene snow. >> well, rahel, jim, good morning. misting before, misting now, so, conditions are sticking pretty much steady here in the
5:37 am
city of philadelphia. even if we were seeing more rain right now, still, so mild out here this morning it, wouldn't be snow, right around 45 degrees, but, you can see behind me here, that the rain has fallen it, continues to fall. we do see some ponding on the sidewalks here. we do see wet road on kelly drive. but really road conditions right now, at least in our area, are pretty clear. again, much too mild for any freezing or any kind of snow or slush, but as conditions change, of course you have to approach driving differently, but take a look at the video, you can see that overnight the rain was coming down much harder at times, in this video , from the city of philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs. that's where all of this rain is now sticking around on the sidewalks, and penndot is preparing for what ever falls they have crews on stand by, unlike previous storms weren't able to pre treat the roads this time around it, has been
5:38 am
just too wet out here. however, they do have crews ready to go, they're treating this as a winter storm, a snow event, but they do realize that their main focus in many areas likely, may just be heavy rain and flooding. >> this is a winter storm, reminder not quite done yet, despite warm temperatures and the storm starting at rain, we're preparing for snow event so, while the storm comes in, as rain, we will be checking in each county manager, on our state highways way system knows their flood prone areas, you know, to what areas to check out. we will have all of our state crews out for the duration of this storm. so as the rain comes down it is forecast today come down heavy at times with blowing wind, talking about reduced visibility, so you have to slow it down, but you can see out here live this morning, motorists cents having no problem at all here along
5:39 am
kelly drive. >> rest assured penndot is prepared and have 80 tons of salt to work with through the rest of the winter season, kelly drive this morning, jan carabeo, cbs-3, "eyewitness news," jim, rahel, back to you >> thank you, jan. you can track the storm as it moves closer, just download the cbs mobile weather app on the phone. >> and the philadelphia area, phones getting few new digit beginning tomorrow, saturday will be the newest area code 445 is placed into service. according to the public utility commission, nothing changes for use heres already have a number, new area code in fact people who may change their number in the future. 445 area code covers philadelphia, bucks, montgomery, lehigh, and berks counties. >> and the stars are gathering in hollywood this weekend for the academy awards. >> up next show you some of the delicious food they'll be dining on, plus this. >> a tribute to hollywood. ninety years in the making. i'm chris martinez in los angeles with inside look at

and television. should be nice weekends to watch the awards. >> nice weekends, ya. >> to watch the awards. >> but yes, to watch, yes, little caveat there. but let's talk about the forecast, weekend will be better at least than today. >> absolutely true, the storm itself will start to pull away , but big, slow moving storm system. so it is like an elephant trying to make a speedy exit. doesn't happen really. >> okay. >> bizarre way of put that, yes, let's go outside, though, not great view, already, outside the art museum stems at the moment. you can at least make out the skyline. it looks like there is a little bit after lull in the rain right now. we had expected that, there is no surprise here. but we are so far from through with this storm system, guys, and we'll -- it bears repeating just reinforce this again, i think wind ends up being the biggest issue we face, always great view, if there is winds, that you'll see the flags waiving, and they're barely moving right now so obviously off to great
5:45 am
start with the win but it will begin only get more intense as the day goes on, checking in with the weather watchers, very interesting observations cents coming in from them, and i'm not shocked by that at all don't have ton of variety with the temperatures. let's focus on other elements, 40 degrees that comes in from eileen, out in bill bert ville , at the moment, it is not raining. she said her bar barometric pressure beginning to drove off in a substantial way. no shock there. did say the rain again has wrapped up recently, looking at her observations, she's had according to her report just over 2 inches every rain so far, and yes, eventually, that rain is going to get way, way worse. let's go back and actually look at the wind coming in from the watchers, what you're going to notice when the list does pop up, there it is, look at the direction all over the place, coming from the welts, the southwest, the west, so what happens here, with the variety of observations cents, is that you're notice that there is a little bit after curvature taking place
5:46 am
depending on location of watch ers it, means the storm is actually intensifying just off shore right now and throwing back the counter clockwise flow. now, power outages as we had mentioned are definitely a possible, see the highest outage risk up toward the poconos, heavy wet snow expected to fall and way down the power lines, then also down near the shore where the winds will be raging >> the kind of extended winds that we will be dealing with, we could see some of the trees get uprooted and bring down the power lines anyway, storm scan3, just snapshot, starting to see the change-over little lull granted. but a change over nonetheless starting to take place here as the storm wraps up. >> how much are we talking? put things into motion, i like
5:47 am
this. >> here in the city see this wrap one coating to maybe 2 inches every snow. a quick check on that seven day. as we had talk about at the desk, this storm is sluggishly pulling away, precipitation is done, meisha, or rather matt still going to have some clouds, and still going to have some wind issues through the span of the weekends >> kate, you're right, out on the roads in montgomery county on the turnpike at this point, and the rain is starting to kickback up. the western side of the city little on the lighter side, start to get this curvature of this system, start to see the precipitation kickback up, it will be coming in from the north-northeast direction then back down toward philly so again the turnpike definitely
5:48 am
morning where it is going to be spray on the roads definitely seeing heavier rain start to pick up just little bit. now, it is still not torrential downpours, anything like, that but still keeping an eye on it, i will say, we stopped real quick, and the temperatures feeling like it is dropping, cooler side, winds picking up if you're in a high profile vehicle, maybe driving your suv, driving your pick-up truck around this morning, and into the afternoon hours, that is going to potentially give us the chance, especially those high profile vehicles, to kind of get blown around with those 40 , 50, and even potentially as much as 06-mile per hour wind gusts cents at times, so you do want to be careful across the board, later this afternoon, as and feels little cooler across the city right now, but the good news it still way too warm as you've been talking about to be frozen precipitation, so the roads still wet, ponding, and definitely spray coming up on the roads, right now.
5:49 am
i send it back to you, but again we send it back to you, give you an idea what's happening in real time right now. >> matt, please drive safe out there, it has been very busy, we know that even just a little bit of rain can really cause some problems for us, and we've been basically seeing that all morning long, so pack that patience, the good news is, the accidents that we have seen, they've basically been clearing out of the way fairly quickly. so that's the silver lining. ninety-five south at cottman satisfy how wet it is, and how busy we are starting to get out there. >> academy road, very slick conditions, very, very wet out there with the rain coming down and of course we'll have some accident out there, this one, roosevelt boulevard, inner lanes, now starting to clear right now. that's the good news, accident in delaware, still out there involving a tractor-trailer fuel spill, 59 northbound at 495 north, three lanes are blocked right now already seeing some yellow as opposed to all green which is where we
