anne: mm-hmm, check on those green beans, too, o.k.? mom, where are the girls? they're outside playing with kevin. ( kevin grunting ) ( whispering ) ( girls giggling ) ahh... that's a tough league. they used to be able to win. remember those days? rebecca: what's the score? green bay, 21, "da bears," 17. hey, i understand my dad has you working the cow barn already, shoveling cow manure. welcome to the casey farm. he's doing a darn good job. hold out for health benefits. yeah, he never worked the barn. wanted to do computers as soon as possible. at a time when we needed it mos before we begin eating, i would like to say that we have a very special reason for being thankful today. uncle brendan and aunt anne have agreed to let me stay and help out on the farm. kevin has decided to put up with us... ( all laughing ) so that his sister... can go back to college in san francisco. michael: hey! oh, kevin, thank you. michael: wha4 about us? give us a hug. that's great! i would like to propose a toast to our new cousins from boston to welcome them. and although i could go on and on... brendan: oh, i know that. and have... ( all laugh ) i think i will turn it over to our darling daughter kate, who is never at a loss for words. honey, would you like to lead us in a little thanksgiving prayer?

yes. good bread, good meat, good lord, let's eat! anne tells me that you're going to the san francisco college of music. i was... until my father passed away. anne: well, now you can go ahead with your plans. so, you're a musician? um-hmm, i really hope to write music and maybe perform. so, anne... do we have a star in the family? we might. i've never heard rebecca sing but brendan tells me you have a beautiful voice. would you sing for us? oh, please do. yeah! all right, let me get my guitar. your dad tells me you teach a computer course?

yeah. i teach at the community college in town. i'm into computers. good for you. it's a great field-- something new happening all the time. oh, yeah, there's a lot to learn. oh, yeah. hey, maybe you could enroll in my class. why not? i'll be staying here for a while. good. oh... maybe she'll sing. let's go. you'll have to excuse me, i'm a little rusty. um... let me see. i'll sing an old folk song, a shaker song. it's called "'tis a gift to be simple." it's kind of weird. it's been quite a year. yeah. i had a dream about dad. oh? i was this little kid and i was holding on to this blanket. you had a blanket and you carried it around with you all the time. you called it your "blankie." i don't remember. mom used to use all kinds of tricks to pry it away from you so she could wash it. i don't remember it at all. it all slips away so fast... the memories.

your father and i had a lot of friends in common. when the korean war broke out, i got drafted, but before i left, i asked patrick to keep an eye on my new girlfriend and your father said he would... and he did. you know, absence doesn't make the heart grow fonder. i got a letter from each of them saying they had fallen in love. it was my mother, wasn't it? things never were the same between your father and me. they got married... and then lady luck smiled and i met my anne. and you know the rest of story. thank god you got to the hospital in time.

i'm sorry it took your father's illness to bring us together. well, now you know. we'd better get you on that plane to san francisco. michael is brendan's son. you must be kevin. i am. hi, i'm michael. rebecca, nice to meet you. he teaches computer science. your dad tells me you teach a computer course? yeah. i teach at the community college in town. well, it is thanksgiving day is a very traditional american thanksgiving. and that's why your father and i never got along. they were both in love with the same woman. when rebecca comes back to san francisco she's trying to catch up with her studies. i've missed so many classes. well, don't worry about that right now. things have a way of working out. she finds alex and ramón. i think ramón is happy to see rebecca. rebecca? kick it, kick it! are you really here? i don't believe it! i'm here, really here. rebecca goes to the afterschool program to find out if she has a job. she doesn't, she had to be replaced. how are things going here? frantic, as usual. listen, um... i hope you derstand you know, i had to find someone for your old job. oh... she's going through the death of her father which is a loss to her and then she has to go through the emotional stress of her school. well, rebecca is desperate.
