we will begin in turkey, where prime minister recep tayyip erdogan has rallied tens of thousands of his supporters as he tries to quell the largest unrest turkey has seen in decades. police cleared a protest camp and sealed off the central square. antigovernment activists remained defiant, but authorities say they will take a hard line against further protests. >> the protesters gathered once more, responding to calls by the solidarity group. security forces used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons to disperse the crowds. witnesses say the violence went on for hours in the streets surrounding the square. elite units attempted to cordon off the district and keep the protesters from regrouping.

they quickly responded with force to the slightest challenge. the rage and sheer numbers were too big. the night after the eviction from the park, the demonstration seemed to grow in size. >> we are not afraid. we will topple this dictator who calls himself the prime minister. growingrt is throughout turkey. protesters took to the streets of the capital on car as well -- ankara as well. right police reacted harshly -- riot police reacted harshly. at the same time, recep tayyip erdogan addressed a massive crowd just outside of istanbul. officially billed as a political rally, recep tayyip erdogan said protesters forced his hand by defying warnings to exit the park. he said cleaning up the park was his duty as prime minister. with a cheering sea of

followers, it was a stark contrast to the ongoing violence just a few kilometers away. he faces the biggest challenge yet to his islamic government's 10 year grip on power. >> for more, we can cross to our correspondent in istanbul, dorian jones. a big show of support for prime minister recep tayyip erdogan in istanbul. what did he have to say? >> his speech was basically on two themes. he started off by talking about the international media, stoking up the discontent at accusing them of working with dark foreign powers. he then suggested that they are conspirators inside turkey. a possiblegests purge by saying he no longer wants to see them in their jobs. he went on to play the islamic card. he then went on to accuse the ongoing unrest as being anti-

islamic. a very powerful, uncompromising message and likely to fuel further escalation in the ongoing crisis. >> you are in central istanbul right now. what is the situation there? >> i'm about 300 meters from the square. following the end of the speech, there was a cacophony of people banging pots and pans from their was as and then there large number of protesters trying to enter the square. they were beaten back by riot police. a large amount of tear gas. number of people detained are believed to be foreign. surrounding buildings have been opened to them by people living here. they regrouped and are trying to get back into the square. this has been going on all along the square in all the different neighborhoods. >> dorian jones reporting from

istanbul. somewhere else following developments in istanbul is claudia, one of the top leaders of germany's green party. to her a short while ago and she said the situation there is like a war zone. she says europe has an obligation to back democratic forces in turkey. >> i think it is of vital importance that we do not identify turkey with erdogan and his policy or government. we should make a difference. i think europe has more than ever made clear that these democrats in 88 provinces, hundreds of thousands of people fighting for fundamental rights the right of demonstration,

freedom of expression, they need support. erdogan would blame the democrats and say, because of you, europe is closing the doors. i think we should criticize german government, european union very heavily and criticize what is going on because there is no human rights not violated in these hours. onto other news, at least 30 people have been killed in a series of attacks targeting many shiite regions of iraq. a car bomb struck a marketplace with several children reported among the dead. officials said it appeared to nearly one dozen bombings in shiite areas were courted native attacks. violence in iraq has spiked to the highest level in five years,

raising fears of renewed sectarian conflict. the united states says it is open to direct talks with north korea, but has stressed that discussions on nuclear disarmament must result in actions, not just words. north korean state tv reported that the country's national defense commission proposed talks to secure peace in the region. the offer comes days after talks with neighboring south korea were called up. tensions have been high on the korean peninsula since february, when the north redoubt its third nuclear test -- carried out its third nuclear test. expressed hope for improved relations. supporters of hassan rouhani celebrated his victory in toronto on saturday. on saturday. the president-elect promised iranians freedom and stability
