the current authorities and the state security apparatus on the one side and the muslim brotherhood on the other side have only helped increasing this kind of popularity. for the most part, it seems that the muslim brotherhood has been unable to garner support from other structures within the society over the past few weeks. there have been continuous marches and demonstrations from the muslim brotherhood, but it seems that, over the past month or two, since president morsi was ousted, it does not seem that the egyptian street now is in a state that would allow it to endorse such confrontations and escalation on the street. with these increasing escalations, it seems that the popularity of the military apparatus has been increasing.

and a growing number of burglaries, and the police's seeming inability to bring the problem under control, residents of oakland have decided to take a problem into their own hands and have been turning to the web for help. one resident launched a campaign for online donations to raise money to hire private security guards to patrol the area. they have raised over $22,000 in less than a week. an interesting project, to say the least, and it is not the only one of its kind. two other online fundraising campaigns have been started over the past few days, also geared towards paying for security patrols across the city. they have raised thousands of dollars so far. residents are looking to gain ground in the coming weeks.
