higher proportion than those taken part in a previous round to vote. it is seen as a crucial test on the national front's popularity ahead of next year's municipal election. for more on what happened in brignoles yesterday, i am joined by our correspondent. what is the surprise? >> the turnout was 45%, so relatively low, and that as a result of this victory, the national front now have only two posts of counselor general in france. it is an important regional job in french politics, but they only have two in the country. however, there is a bigger backdrop, which is that the french president, françois hollande, is increasingly unpopular. if you look at opinion polls. whereas marine le pen, the leader of the national front remember, came in with nearly 18% of the national vote in the first strand of the presidential

election. actually elected françois hollande. she had succeeded in making the party more mainstream, more palatable to centrist voters. one consequence is that you don't see so much what was called a republican front. in other words the mainstream left and the right getting together in the second round of an election to keep out the national front. that is not something that either the left or the right seems keen on anymore. so that lack of, in front against the national front is good for them for future elections. >> what about if we look on a more european level at this sort of victory. populist right-wing parties -- how are they doing more broadly? >> you often have a protest vote in european elections, which give good results to these populist radical right-wing parties, and i want to show you an opinion poll will stop this

is predictions by the polling institute in france. this poll really put the wind up a few french politicians, as you can see their bank. a predicted 24% in those elections next may. the mainstream right part of the ump trailing in the socialists' third place. a similar poll gave a big share of the vote to the u.k. independence party, which has similarities with the french national front. you have a bigger trend in europe, and if you look at research done by the london school of economics, they show four countries where the far right has steadily increased its share of votes in the elections since the financial crisis hit in 2008. those four countries are france,
