agency secretly recorded millions of phone calls here. that report came out on the website of the french newspaper. its proof? documents leaked by former u.s. security expert edward snowden. >> shocking and unacceptable. that's how the french government reacted to revelations by the newspaper that the u.s. agency was spying on france. >> we have a close relationship with u.s. intelligence services to fight terrorism. but if a friend, an ally spies on france or other european countries that is totally unacceptable. >> the report based on documents leaked by edward snowden back in june says they swept up more than 70 million records over a 30-day period. the nsa program automatically recordrd conversations from flagged numbers as well as text messages based on key words.

5:41 am
what probably comes as a surprise this time is the prapts the extent, the intensive and extensive spying on the french citizens. but i think the clue here is the other terms, high rampinging politicians and economic actors on the french scene. i think that probably is what has caused the extraordinary move on the part of the french administration to call the american ambassador, which is something that is usually reserved for very, very serious situations. and which comes at a very crucial moment in the relationship between the united states and france in as much as they are working together on the syrian question, which is the most important question of the day. my feeling is that those revelations that they are making really have more to do with the, what i might call the quality of the spying this time
5:42 am
meaning that it doesn't just target the ordinary french citizens but important personalities maybe at the very top of the french government and also probably at the very top of the great french enterprises,. >> what might the reasons be behind this kind of spying? top political leaders, business executives? >> well, it's all left over as it were from 9/11. and in the sense the nsa has the technological means to spy on everybody basically. and to -- and maybe it kids itself in a sense to thinking with that enormous amount of data it can pull out very useful things. and when it does come into contact with useful political or economic information well, the natural tendency of any spying agency is going to be to report it to its government and that government will make use of it.
5:43 am
and of course this could be dangerous even for allies. >> what kind of spying might there be from france on other nations? is there something could we imagine something like this on the flip side? >> well, i'm sure that france is like every western country nowadays that has the means. and intelligence personnel is spying on the united states. in fact there have been situations in the past where it was revealed and proven that france had spied on the united states. so i'm afraid, it's a very general phenomenon. it's only that the united states has the means to really do it in an absolutely humegoss as it were way. which i must i think it should be said and everybody knows it constitutes a threat to democracy. >> thank you very much for that. >> you're welcome. >> france's new wealth tax has
