they never have anything useful to say to me. that's not true. and if you don't take care of your leg it's only going to get worse. they say exercise can help, you know. o.k., o.k. you're in a bad mood today. well, i'm doing the best i can. hospitals make me nervous... doctors put me on edge... and i'm worried about my kids. one says she wants to go to music school. so...? but music? what kind of a job will you get if you study music? come on, dad. music is big business. there are all kinds of jobs. sure, turning pages for some dumb piano player. come on. you know my dream is to be a songwriter. you and a million others. i think i have some talent. why don't you study nursing or something? it's not me. it's not what i want. i want to study music. well, if you ask me, i think you're making a big mistake.

and, of course, sal's homemade boston baked beans. so, how have you been? oh, so busy, you know, with my day job and some gigs at night, guitar lessons... are you still working at the factory? i'm hoping to go to college-- music school. good for you! which one? well, my first choice is the boston school of music, but i've applied to four colleges altogether. oh, all four will want you. i mean, you have such a great voice! i wish i had a talent like that. come on, you have a husband who loves you, a beautiful daughter, and your own apartment. i mean, what more could you...? you're right. i mean... i can't complain. life is good. so, what does matt think about your plans to study music? he doesn't really understand. he doesn't think i'll make it. men. they're all alike. all they think about is money... and sex. yeah.

narrator: now let's review and discuss the story. sal: hey, welcome to our fourth annual memorial day cookout. speaker: she was going to a barbecue where she was going to be with friends. they're having the usual fare-- boston baked beans, hot dogs. i mean, everything that, you know, people like. potato salad... sounds good. basically, i don't like barbecue. speaker: rebecca's best friend is sandy and, um, she has... came to the party with her boyfriend jack. hey, but sandy, she's the love of my life. jack... hey, i'm thirsty. i'm getting a drink. you want anything? no, maybe later. thanks. jack's in a good mood! no, not really. he's had too many beers. i think, um, he doesn't seem to be a very considerate and gentle boyfriend to sandy and he just yells at her.

i want to know about everything about my parents, you know. to tell your children of your illness of your sickness it is something that they normally don't talk about it. but i think it's important to realize that denial is not really healthy because in the long run is more harmful, because at the end, people are going to feel bad. they will find out no matter what. ( band playing "pomp and circumstance" ) where's kevin? i don't see him. he's in the second row, aunt molly.

keep your fingers crossed. only one? well, i hope they take you. i'm supposed to hear this week. which college-- the new england conservatory? no, they turned me down. it's the san francisco college of music. san francisco? that's right. san francisco, california. rebecca! but rebecca, this school is on the other side of the country. i know that, but if san francisco accepts me and gives me some financial aid, that's where i'm going. but you don't know a soul out there. yes, i do. my godmother lives out there. what, is she rich or something? she has such a big house. no, she's not rich, but she does have a room for me if i get accepted. you're really serious about this, aren't you? dead serious. "we're pleased to inform you that you've been accepted at the san francisco..." oh, my god, i'm going! oh, good news? i... i... very good news. when i got my visa, that was... just like her acceptance to college. oh, my gosh, they accepted you! the san francisco college of music! oh, rebecca, i'm so happy for you! it can mean the whole new world, the whole new life opening up. i think rebecca, uh... probably at that moment of happiness, she would even forget all about her family. just don't think about it; you don't think about what you leave behind and your family. everything is gone, and then it dawns on you, doesn't it?
