fading. friends and family standby in shock. andrew is covering events for us. it is 8:00 in south korea. night has fallen. walk us through the search and rescue efforts. >> the day's event started on a grim note. south koreans woke up to find the death count has risen dramatically. we now have possibly 28 confirmed bodies which appear to have floated up from inside the ship wearing life jackets. that means there are still about 270 missing, presumed dead. there is a spark of hope. people hope there may be some left alive inside the whole -- hull. divers entered the hull and cafeteria where many bodies were

expected to be. sort of a surprise no bodies. the cafeteria was empty. that is a bit of a mystery. there are plans to pump oxygen into the vessel to assist survivors. i am not sure the status of that. a floating salvage crane has appeared on site, soon to be joined by two more. salvage operations will lift it out of the water. that may begin as early as tomorrow. that is the latest on the search-and-rescue. >> prosecutors are seeking an arrest warrant for the captain. what more can you tell us about the investigation? are we any closer to knowing what happened? >> no, but what appears clear is the captain and many members of the crew behaved in a shoddy manner, a very unprofessional manner, and made all the wrong decisions. it is hardly surprising prosecutors are seeking an arrest warrant for this man we

she had taken a job to assist her family. after the public address system had been giving the order to people to stay still she on her own initiative started telling passengers get out and was physically shoving passengers toward the exits. many of those passengers did survive. she was seen without a life jacket. she had given her stray passenger. she was up to her chest in water. tragically, her body was first to be identified. that is an inspirational story i'll a sad one --albeit a settlement. the media has been focusing on a six-year-old girl who survived. she was saved by one of the high school students, but tragically her mother and brother are still missing. these kinds of stories are starting to come out. i think there's a great deal of anger being focused at the

things to the accounts of survivors, a picture is starting to emerge of what happened on board. it is a grim picture. you can see the title. one thing that is unclear is why so many passengers were unable to escape. it took nearly two and a half hours for the ship to capsize. according to this article passengers were told to stay inside their cabins because it was too dangerous to go outside. >> the captain of the ship is coming under a lot of heat. he was reportedly among the first to leave the ship. >> that is according to an article in the leading daily in south korea. you can see the title. it says the ferry captain fled the sinking ship. he told his crew to tell the passengers to remain in their cabins boarded a lifeboat, and left the scene of the accident. when he was rescued by the coast
