there is no reason to fear that russia will repeat a crimean scenario in southeastern ukraine. he was speaking in the wake of fresh sanctions announced by washington and brussels. the european union released a list of 15 russian politicians and military leaders that are to be subjected to asset freezes and travel bans. washington has unveiled sanctions against seven more individuals with close ties to vladimir putin and 17 companies. sanctions that are pushing ukraine, the ukraine crisis towards a dead-end, according to moscow. moscow accuses the west of creating a new iron curtain. >> stepping up the pressure on added once again, the eu 15 new names to the russian section list on monday, the same day barack obama announced fresh u.s. sanctions. seven russian officials will have u.s. visa bans and asset

freezes, including two of vladimir putin's inner circle. the new russian envoy to crimea and the head of a state-controlled energy company. 17 companies linked closely to putin allies will have their assets frozen. a russian oil giant was not one of those targeted. washington is halting some exports that could benefit the russian military. >> we will also focus on some areas of high-tech defense exports to russia that we do not think are appropriate to be exporting in this kind of climate. >> vladimir putin struck back, saying sanctions would not hold russia down in the long run. >> we will find an adequate replacement. there are unique things produced by one or two companies, but we will make them anyway. it will be a little more expensive and will take more time, but we will survive. our partners will not. >> barack obama said the u.s.

was keeping the so-called phase three of embargoes in reserve. it would target russian energy and financial sectors. brussels is preparing phase three so it will be ready to put in place if russia takes action and escalates the situation in ukraine. so far, it has held back from these broader sanctions as moscow is the eu's third-largest trading partner. 30% of their gas comes from russia. angercow has reacted with to the second round of sanctions announced by washington and the eu, accusing the west of pushing up a new iron curtain. within the last few minutes, moscow said it is working on a response of its own, a reply to this sanctions. we spoke to our correspondent in brussels a short while ago who told us more about the specifics of the sanctions announced today by brussels. added toe 15 people

more violence ahead of tomorrow's general election. an attack on an outdoor market northeast of the capital baghdad has killed 11 people this morning. at least 19 wounded in that attack. the attack comes one day after a series of attacks that killed at least 46 people throughout the country. this has polls are to open in what will be the country's first general election since the withdrawal of american troops. we can speak to the afp correspondent in baghdad for more. thank you very much for joining us. first of all, more violence this morning after yesterday's violence. the death toll keeps rising. >> that is right. we are up to 15 dead at the moment for the bombing. this comes after a day of attacks when security forces
