is a bid to restore order. the military made its move after rival political factions refused to give ground. it is the latest turn in a struggle for power between the royalist establishment and a populist government. we have more from the capital bangkok. >> the military took control of the country yesterday. it is trying to tighten its grip on power and nip any possible resistance. 150 five political leaders and others that have been summoned to meet with the military today. they are in a meeting at the moment. it is unclear what the meeting is about or what it is going to do. it seems likely they will be laying down ground rules for this new regime that will be running the country, warning individuals they will not be tolerated if they try and depose the current regime. those 155 people have been slept

with travel bans. they are not allowed to leave the country. television stations have been blacked out since the coup yesterday. they are scheduled to come back online this evening. we have seen protests in bangkok and in the north against the coup, despite a ban by the military with a threat of one year in prison for gatherings of five people or more. there is a concern regarding the leaders of the movement that have been against the military 2006 that continued to stand on the side of the government that has been ousted again. we have been trying to contact many of those leaders. none have been reached in the last 24 hours. it seems they may have been detained. we are not sure where they are at the moment. >> the political unrest is taking its toll on thailand's economy. tourism is a key sector in the country. the numbers are already down.

are reacting to the military takeover. >> for these tourists in bangkok, it is time to leave. a day after the military coup, they decided to travel other parts of the country far away from the capital or even go home. >> we are going away today. when we arematter going. we think it is ok. i think it is a little scary because i do not know much about it. people do not know much about it it seems like. it is a little bit frightening. otherse some packed up, have no intention of changing their itinerary for a coup. both countries have not called on their citizens to leave thailand. many foreigners are staying until the situation deteriorates further. >> it is on our mind, but we are ok.

we come from europe. >> for the first quarter months of the year, tourist arrivals are already down 5%. travel agencies fear the coup could trigger a new decline in these figures. tourism makes up about 10% of thailand's economy. the drop in visitors of the beginning of the year has contributed to the fall of the country's gdp and added to fears it is sliding into recession. two of parliament elections in europe. voters in ireland and the czech republic have started casting their ballots this friday. a total of 20 countries are taking part in the staggered polls which run until the sunday. the u.k. and the netherlands were the first to vote. estimates show britain's anti-e.u. party made strong gains in local elections. this could indicate a good sewing --showing for the e.u.

poll. the dutch freedom party suffered a surprise setback at the polls and are no longer in the top position. >> it is a devastating blow to the dutch far right. according to exit polls released thursday, the freedom party is set to finish behind the pro-european rivals. the party is blaming a low turnout of 37% for its poor performance. >> the netherlands has not become more pro-europe. 2/3 of the voters stayed at home. i can only say we fought like lions. the exit polls are disappointing. but let's not be too upset over it. freedom indicate the party will get about 12.2% of the vote, bringing the number of seats it has in the assembly down from five to three. the christian democrats and centrist democrats are

officers are determined to keep a close watch on whoever wins the election. shooting of aal bystander by turkish police has triggered deadly protests in istanbul. the 30-year-old victim was shot and killed as he watched police clash with demonstrators in a working-class neighborhood thursday. turkish police have been accused by human rights groups of excessive use of force in the past. authorities say an investigation into the death is underway. jasper mortimer is following the story for us. protests turning deadly in turkey. walk us through the events of the past 24 hours. >> yesterday, there was an antigovernment demonstration in a working-class suburb of istanbul which has a history of riots and protests against the government. it was there last year that a 14-year-old boy going out to buy a loaf of bread for his mother was hit in the head by a tear gas and mr. fired by police.
