good evening. for more than two decades the image of the catholic church has been severely tarnished by sexual abuse scandals. today pope francis some of some of those abused by priests scompessing sorrow and asking for forgiveness. he said the roman catholic church should weep and make reparations of these crimes which he compared to a satanic cult. let's listen to what the pontiff had to say. translator: i ask for your forgiveness for the sins of a the leaders of the tchauch have not answered adequately for the allegations of abuse from the family members. and by those that were the ictims of abuse.

>> pope francis speaking a little bit earlier today. for now we go to our rome correspondent cima gupta. cima, talk us through what happened there at the vatican today. >> essentially pope francis did say those word during a homily during the mass celebrated with the victims inside the vatican this morning. then after he said those dramatic words begging for forgiveness, he also met personally with each and every one of the six victims. of the six three men and three women. two from britain, two fra germany and -- two from ireland. one of the irish victims has spoken to the irish media saying snelt vindicated for having met the head of the catholic church and pope francis did listen very intently to her. the vatican spokesperson

rejected any claims what happened today was nothing but a p.r. exercise and instead said it was a moving and intense experience and showed that the pope was willing, really, to listen to the victims. >> tell us a little more about how victims' groups are reacting to what was said and done today. >> exactly. some of them wondered why it took pope francis some 16 months into his papacy in order to have this meeting with the victims and to apologize in this fashion. on top of that, victims' group representing victims around the world known by the acronym snap, they applauded the victims for coming forward and sharing stories with pope francis but they said instead of begging for forgiveness, the pope really should just stop the abuse. they want to see a system of accountability put in place to deal with those that commit these crimes as well as those that try to conceal the crime.

so we will have to see what happens next in terms of what the commission that pope francis has set up to deal with this issue will do. the commission did meet on sunday and is scheduled to meet against in october to perhaps include other members from other parts of the world. at the moment most of the members are from europe and will have to see whether what pope francis does today in terms of very symbolic action gets played out in terms of concrete action. >> thank you very much indeed for that update, seem yap guptia in rome. thank you again. to israel where officials say three people being held in custody for the killing of palestinian teenager have confessed to carrying out that brutal murder. 16-year-old mohammed abu khdair from east jerusalem is thought to have been burned alive in the suspected revenge attack for the deaths of three israeli teenagers whose bodies were found june 30th. now the deaths of the four young people has triggered several
