>> good evening. seven days have now passed since israel began its offensive in the gaza strip. israeli authorities say the operation is in response to heavy rocket fire from the densely populated territory and over the course of the past week, more than 1300 air strikes have been carried out, claiming the lives of at least 177 palestinians, amongst them dozens of civilians. palestinian militants meanwhile raunched 1,000 rockets. so far there's no israeli fatalities. for the first time monday they launched an unmanned aerial
2:31 pm
drone at israel though it was quickly shot down. here's the latest. >> among tens of thousands of palestinians who fled their homes, many found rev youth in schools run by the u.n. organization for refugees. these institution are among the safest locations in the gaza strip. >> we didn't come here to save our on lives but those of our children who will grow up terrified and came here barefoot. we came here walking. >> for a week now the israeli air force pounded the gaza strip, trying to weaken significantly hamas and put an end to rocket launches in the territory into israel. they targeted about 1,500 sites. rocket launchers allege hamas and islamic jihad militants in warehouses like in this video eleased by the army. most of those killed in the bombings were civilians.
2:32 pm
at the same time hamas fired about 1,000 rockets into israel. here on its tv station video, the group said it launched m-75 rockets on tel aviv and for the first time j-80 rockets as well. moss also reported it sent several drones into israel, confirming its arsenal is increasingly sophisticated. massing tanks and troops along the border with gaza, israel has been readying itself for a ground operation. meanwhile, foreign envoys are beginning efforts to immediate a cease-fire, even though neither side seems ready to lay down weapons yet. >> for more, we will speak to ric -- air is macklar in jerusalem. they appear to be coming into their own now, especially given the rather surprising hardware in the hands of the hamas militants. >> yes, the drone was shot down. hamas said it launched it and on
2:33 pm
hamas television tonight there was footage of it in case we doubted it showing this is a psychological war as much as it's a real shooting and physical war. it was launched in the early hours of the morning. israel recognized it, intercepted it and shot it down. after that, that whole area from gaza up to the southern israeli city of ashdod was declared a closed military zone. there has been rocket fire now for the third day in a row from the north into the north of israel. that means from lebanon there was also some shooting from syria yesterday but this is the third day that we have seen rocket fire from lebanon. it's believed to be palestinian rocket fire, that is palestinian groups inside lebanon and not the lebanese group hezbollah. and that actually does make a difference to the way it's considered from israel. but still it zp mean that today, for example, all of israel was within rocket range and that is a very different experience for the state of israel when it's
2:34 pm
fighting with the palestinians in gaza certainly. >> and diplomatic pressure on all sides to end that bloodshed. where in particular is the pressure coming from? >> i would say at the beginning and most strongly from europe. we have seen varying foreign ministers speaking out, calling, making the point that a cease-fire really is time for a cease-fire. there is also a pressure and involvement of the united states with u.s. secretary of state john kerry about to go to cairo. although there now seems to be a bit of doubt about that trip. but there's the intervention of the united states as well. now, the problem is usually the traditional media is egypt and egypt is not as involved as it has been. partly because of the change of government. hamas is regarded as muslim brotherhood's little brother, gaza branch office of the brotherhood. and current egyptian leadership is at war with the muslim brotherhood. so there's a reluctance both from hamas and egypt to step
2:35 pm
into that role. but it is now egypt, cairo is now stepping in and i think we will see more involvement and more action on this diplomatic front now. >> thank you very much there in jerusalem. and let's cross now to cairo and get more on egypt's attempts to broker peace between the two sides. we can speak to ashlaf, who is in cairo. what do we know about egypt's efforts behind the scenes? >> very little beyond some very shallow rhetoric at this point, has said e government egypt will be involved, egypt's internal issues will not get in the way of it until playing traditional role of broker because now the governor is internal floikoused and has their own pile of domestic issues to worry about. but as aris just said, this is
2:36 pm
not the same hamas/cairo relationship that had been in the past. under previous president mohammed morrissey and even going back to mubarak, there was a strong link between cairo and hamas that was activated in times of crisis like this. nout out of loyal -- now out of loyalty to the muslim brotherhood, hamas stated they don't trust cairo as much as they used to. however, they don't have that many options. if they want to talk to the international community and talk to israel, that road almost has to go through cairo. >> indeed very difficult to identify at this stage. a credible and effective mediator amongst all of that. happening right now there in the egyptian capital, getting started at any rate, is the arab league meeting. can you tell us what you think they're hoping to achieve? >> yes, that meeting should be started right now according to the schedule and they're having
2:37 pm
late-night meeting because it's ramadan and many delegates are fasting going out water, much less food or coffee. so it's supposed to start now. however, i think the expectations are somewhat limited given the industry of the arab league. the arab league has never proven an effective mediator particularly of the israeli-palestinian conflict. really much of what they have come out have been statement of solidarity and appeals for international pressure. i expect we're going to see more of the same. really the arab league has never had a track record of being able to effectively mediate this conflict. cairo has much stronger track record and now even cairo's credibility is being called into question as you said. >> thank you very much for that update. thank you again. against the backdrop of that situation in gaza, sunday evening saw angry scenes here in the french capital where police and pro-palestinian demonstrators clashed close to the central ba stich.
2:38 pm
according to some sources, it ended violently. trying to enter two synagogues, bastille. rating president francois hollande spoke out against what happened yesterday. translator: we can't bring the conflict between israel and palestinian home. everyone is free to stage demonstrations. people have that right. but you cannot have outbreaks of violence. you cannot have attacks or attempts to attack places of worship, whether they're synagogues, like what happened yesterday. i say the same thing for mosques, for churches or temples. we live in a secular country. all religions have the right to peaceful places of worship. i would like to say frmly attacks of this sort will not be ell rated.

huge metal boxes attached to its hull. this will aim to bring the boat off an existing temporary platform on the sea bed. pumping out the water is expected to take about a week when salvagers hope the ship will be almost at level with the sea and stable enough to be towed away. translator: i want to express a wish for all of us. i hope that the coming days will be the most boring of our lives. if that's the case, it will mean that everything went well. >> 32 people died after the concordia crashed onto gilo in january 2012. its captain sket tino is currently on trial for manslaughter and other related charges. >> now sunday's football world cup final in rio was watched by millions of people right across the globe who witnessed germany beat argentina 1-0 at the iconic americana stadium. but it wasn't just planet earth people enjoyed the game. crew aboard international space station tuned in. and perhaps for the german astronaut, he was quite literally out of the world with

the world cup. >> now growth has become coming down in the past two years, especially when you look back and compare it to 2010. what is your take on the brazilian economy, how strong is it and what's your forecast for it? >> it's really extremely weak. we forecast 1.3 for this year, 1.5 next year. bearing niped brazil was growing at 4% 10 years ago so it lost a lot of steam. one of the problems investment has been going down very much and the other problem is consumption, especially the first quarter, we see brazilians not consuming so much, a big percentage is middle classes spending money and it's not there anymore. by the way, the fact brazilian lost very poorly -- performed very poorly at the world cup may hurt the moral of the brazilians. >> the american banking giant citigroup con will pay several millions to the sale of rick yiss mortgages in the run-up to
