prepared for a potential widening of the incursion. let's get all the latest now from our correspondent in jerusalem. the israeli public is being told of military advance this is prilled. -- friday. what can you tell us? >> the israeli public is being told there's an air, sea, and land assault but the land assault, the ground offensive, ask limited. songs infantry hasn't gone in very far. they've gone into an area close to the israeli border and they're clearing out tunnels there. they've released footage of the tunnels. they say there are some 20 where there are rockets stored, rocket launchers and the tunnels are all linked to each other. hamas obviously i would say finds this quite threatening. they've released a statement saying this is a fabrication and
2:33 pm
that these pictures aren't real and that israeli is releasing pictures of other tunnels, not these ones near the border. so the israeli force troops are doing their work there. there are some firefighters against militants. rael say they've killed some 20 but most of the pill -- militants have fallen further back into the gaza strip and that's why there is an issue of the possible widening of this ground offensive. >> what can you tell us about the demonstrations that have flared up in israel as a result of this incursion? >> two demonstrations today. one in jerusalem. it is, of course, friday during ram ma dan and it is not untypical to see nonadministrations after the friday prayers and there was an increased police presence and there were injuries.

distress itself. >> as the israeli attacks from the ground, sea and the air, thursday's five-hour partial truce seems very far. yet some world leaders are trying to mediate one for the sake of those trapped in the fighting. some hoped hamas would accept a cease-fire. >> they asked me what i would do. i said i would contact turkish and qatar authorities because they can influence hamas. >> turkey and qatar are seen as two possible mediators but this time israel could be the one who dismisses the deal, as it sees qatar as a close ally of hamas, while tush -- turkish leaders re among its harshest critics. >> israel's unrestrained acts unfortunately plant the seeds of
2:36 pm
hatred in palestine and around the world. >> israel has received reports from the u.s., the u.k. and germany saying it has the right to defend its citizens. >> israeli cities are reachable with rockets, something that was tried. every country that is attacked like this obviously has to defend itself. >> but those countries say israel has to act for proportionately, making sure palestinian civilians aren't injured or killed. >> our correspondent is standing by and joins us by skype. previous efforts have failed but are talks intensifying to try to secure a hamas-israeli cease-fire? >> there's definitely an intensified flurry of activity
2:37 pm
but there doesn't seemed to be a lot of progress. it does appear to be stalling on the issue of getting hamas on board and the french foreign minister when he was here expressed support for an egyptian initiative but also didn't sound terribly optimistic that hamas was looking to -- that there were signs that hamas was going to sign off the initiative. that is the major sticking point. >> and more generally, how has the tone changed in egypt for ?his mediating role >> yeah, at this point it's not really front-page news. it's the middle of ramadan and the middle of the campaign and they just raised gas prices by 78% overnight. the egyptians are upset about what's happening in jazz -- gaza but it's not jet developing into
2:38 pm
pressure on the administration to do more. that might change in a matter of days but right now it's a honeymoon period and there are a lot of distractions. >> do you think the danger now that while the arab world is distracted in various ways and you've outlined how they're distracted at home, that this conflict now could fester? >> absolutely, absolutely. it could be a moment when the arab world is not looking as closely azerbaijani it would in normal circumstances as gaza but that could change in a day with one sort of fresh bloody attack or a situation like the boys on the beach yesterday. just one of those could capture the public imagination and develop immediately into a real public relations problem for israel. >> thank you for bringing us the latest from cairo.

2:46 pm
been obviously military aircraft flying at low levels. although i suppose this was a mistake, it does go outside the most recent line we've seen in this conflict. >> it is likely the sides in the conflict will continue to make claim and counter claim. >> in other news, italy's former prime minister silvio berlusconi has won an appeal against his conviction for paying for sex with an underage prostitute. his seven-year prison sentence has been thrown out by judges in my lab in the so-called ruby case. the case offering an unseemly peek into the 7-year-old's private life. >> the lawyers say the verdict ent beyond their rosiest expectations as the prison term was overturned. scrapping his seven-year sentence and lifelong ban from
