ukraine. welcome back. the untop story -- and security council is calling for an immediate cease-fire in gaza as the bloody violence continues. gaza health officials say the death toll among palestinians from the israeli military offensive has now reached more than 500. also, israelis say some 10 palestinian militants were killed while trying to infiltrate israel via a tunnel. the un security council is calling for an immediate end to hostilities between the two sides. let's cross to gaza to speak to gallagher fenwick. you have just been at a location where another family was killed during an airstrike. tell me, what did you see?
5:32 am
>> exactly. i am in the center of gaza, and it is precisely where a strike occurred earlier today, killing about a dozen people who were caught under the rubble of a house. moments ago in this very densely populated and poor area of gaza, we witnessed a similar scene with about 12 missiles launched by an israeli f-16, over some of the houses which a right behind us. it is impossible to know what precisely occurred over there, whether or not there are casualties. we were prevented from approaching the point of contact i locals who said we were risking our lives and could be above theones flying area and observing movements on the ground. we also witnessed several ambulances trying to make their way to that point of impact, and they were prevented. we asked the ambulance workers why they were not going to the area which was hit by the israeli missiles, and they were explaining to us that without
5:33 am
coordination with the israelis are with the you win or the international red cross, there is no way they are going in there because they do not to risk their life. it is a very chaotic scene. people literally running through the streets of gaza and trying to find somewhere to hide and feel safe. people are telling us that they do not feel safe anywhere in gaza. it is very much a terrified population around us. >> i am afraid we have to leave it there. thank you. here in paris, there have been afterfor calm pro-palestinian protests in the french capital descended into violence. on sunday, just north of the city, there were further clashes. cars were set alight and police disperse the to crowd. the french government has condemned the violence. >> i have seen those posters calling for protests yesterday in the district, and they are
5:34 am
real incitements to anti-semitic hatred. airedwant all anger to be and all protests to take place, but we do not want this to turn into an outpouring of anti-semitic hatred across the country. >> for more on this story, i am joined here in the store -- studio by our french correspondent. the government has adopted a very tough stance on this issue. what has prompted them to do that? >> probably learning from past experiences. france witnessed such violence which the second instance began in 2000, and at the time there was a socialist government in power. the then-government was accused of not reacting to some of those violent demonstrations. around, some of the people who were in government
5:35 am
clearly remember and decided to take a very tough stance by condemning very vividly the as anti-semitic. that wasn't the -- that was not the case years ago, it was just violence that was not characterized. they also decided to band a lot of the protest with the violence has erupted. some are wondering that my banning the protest, are you making the problem worse, and government officials say they assume that a final it's and they prefer to ban the protests and deal with the violent elements within this protests, rather than allow protests that might make things worse. obviously, we have seen some of those protests which began peacefully and were more about condemning israel or condemning morph intoe in gaza, something more like street
5:36 am
violence and some of the guerilla scenes we have seen. >> why is this happening in france as opposed to other parts of europe? what france has the largest jewish and largest muslim community in western europe. when you have the violence in the middle east erupting in such a dramatic way some as we have just seen in gaza, this creates tension. this is, especially now with social networks all around and tv, this makes things even more this prompts and violence. obviously, there is also a social context. in france, we know in the suburbs of large towns like harris, there are many disgruntled youth -- in suburbs and large towns like paris. and the muslim immigrant community has every reason to protest against the state, the
5:37 am
police, the authority -- >> it is not just sheer anger directed at the situation. it is broader than that. >> yes, from the elements we have in the arrests made after the violence we just saw, we know some petty criminals were arrested. for instance, some football fans from a team infiltrated the just to makearis trouble, just to fight with the police. so, yes, clearly, there are some violence in this, but there is also more common violence and that is more petty crime that is taking place, and it is taking advantage of this very volatile situation in the middle east and the tension it creates here in europe and especially in france. has put the government
5:38 am
and a very difficult position, responding to very tough measures. even that the prime minister prides himself on taking a very strong stand against any such violence, doesn't he? >> absolutely. remember, he was the one who was in charge of advising the prime minister in 2000. you remember vividly the criticism that the thin-prime minister incurred for not denouncing the violence forcefully enough and not violence, asof they should be. so prime minister manuel valls has taken a tough stance. but that could add fuel to the fire, and especially the criticism that the socialist government is taking sides, that it is siding with israel in its public pronouncement, but also by banning those protests. so there is the risk, and valls
5:39 am
is clear in adding that there is a risk that there could be a .acklash and further violence obviously, the government is hoping that eventually things will calm down in gaza and paris. >> thank you. moving on, fighting has broken thein a railway station in ask and eastern ukraine. plumes of smoke in the sky. separatists say it is an attempt by government forces to regain the city. people are fleeing as busloads of rebels are being brought in to fight government troops. we will bring in more details as they come in. ukraine, the bodies of scores of victims of the down malaysian airlines plane are being stored on a refrigerated train close to the crash site. kiev has agreed to send all of the recovered bodies, and the
