down to the wire. who came on top. israeli forces and hamas fighters in the gaza strip are starting up another and at war. fighter launched a barrage of rockets into israel and israeli forces responded with air strikes and artillery fire. the conflict has already killed more than a thousand palestinians and over 408 israelis -- 40 israelis. we report on what's behind the cycle of violence. >> people in gaza had a short window to breathe as the israeli military broke from shelling. fighting resume. israeli forces said the prime target is to attack hamas militants and destroy their military infrastructure, but so far they have killed more civilians in their offensive.

>>translator: why do they target innocent people? >> reporter: israeli troops have shelled densely populated area. a school run by the united nations was hit by the fighting. israeli leaders say hamas hides rockets inside the buildings. before these attacks, a chilling message was sent to people living in gaza under mobile phones saying you will experience fear nothing like before. >>translator: this was horrifying. a lot of people got killed. i thought i'll be next. >> reporter: the islamic group hamas are seen as terrorists by israel and united states. their armed wing is a brigade. they have a much bigger political wing that runs schools

and other social services. >>translator: i support hamas. they are sincere and they are devout. >> reporter: in june, the palestinian president announced to form a unity government with haums -- hamas. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said he will never sit down for talks with them. >>translator: hamas is a terrorist organization that is committed to the destruction of israel. world leaders should not rush to recognize the new government. >> reporter: the israelis have erected electric fences around ga tight regulate the supplies there. the trip is -- the strip is called the world's biggest prison. this is an israeli village near the border with gaza.

latin america. he attended his first summit of leaders with 14 caribbean nations. he's become the first japanese prime minister to visit the country. before attending the meeting, he met with leaders. abe told the prime ministers that the two share universal values such as the rule of. >> translator: thr visit, i'd like to open page in japan's hist trinidad and tobago an caribbean countries ties inspect various fields. >> abe called for support in dealing with internati challenges including the reform of the security council. it was aagreed and she expressed investment from japa companies. abe met leaders of bermu as well as jamaica.

they agreed to further expand economic relations and perso exchanges. fighting is intensifying in the area where a malaysian airline jet was downed earlier this month. they are stepping up offensive. to regain control of the region held by pro russian separatists and dutch primay reject the idea of sending armed troops to secure the crash site. the airliner was shot down over part of eastern ukraine controlled by pro russian separatists. all 298 passengers and crew members were killed. an international team of unarmed police officers were headed to the site on sunday to collect evidence and recover bodies but they postponed the plan because of poor security. the ukrainian military is intensifying attacks on russian separatists wh the area. they say they need to security the site to allow for a investigation. officials from the dutch

the continent, this is where we've seen severe weather. on sunday at least six tornadoes occurred in the eastern u.s. along with large hail up to 11 centimeters in diameter. the northeastern areas will see improving conditions but it's not the case for the southwestern areas from the gulf coast up into the carolina coast. there is a possibility of severe thunderstorms, isolated tornadoes along with large hail and damaging winds. nice conditions will return in the northeast and cooler temperatures will be moving in from eastern canada lowering temperatures. take a look. chicago only 21 degrees for a high on monday. the average this time year is 30 degrees. washington, d.c., sunny weather will continue and lower than average temperatures will also continue for the next couple of days. across asia, the rainy season has finally ended in northern japan. this summer is in full swing across the country.

no rainfall for the northern areas of china. into the south, we have a couple of tropical depressions and this one right here is likely to aim for the southwestern areas of japan as we go to the midpart of this week. it's enhancing the southwest, but also the west coast will see copious amounts of rain for the next couple of days. watching out for flooding and mudslides. with the chinese, the highs are going to be dangerously high. in europe, severe weather is in several years through the iberian peninsula and the balkan peninsula. and 110 millimeters has fallen in montenegro. conditions will remain the same for the next several days.
