anchor: good evening. the day after reaching an agreement for the framework of a nuclear deal, the iranian president, rouhani promised his country will stand by his commitments. tom: that deal after days of grueling negotiations between the islamic power and six world powers was announced on thursday. well, the foreign minister was given a hero's welcome.
2:31 pm
listen in to what the iranian president had to say about the deal. >> some believe that we should fight with the rest of the world or capitulate. i think there is a third possibility. we can cooperate with the rest of the world. >> if we make a promise, well we will keep this promise. this, of course, provided that the other party keeps its promises. tom: the iranian president speaking there. we have philip in washington joining us. philip, let me start by asking you, the reaction to that deal has been closely watched all over the world. in particular in the united states, and in particular, in congress. philip: yeah it's been pretty much the way we expected. not certainly along party lines
2:32 pm
but those members of congress we thought would be very against this deal, has done so. the sales pitch began as early as yesterday in the rose garden with that speech announcing the deal by president obama. he was speaking to the american public but also to congress. but what's really important to note over the next few months is that obama administration and this white house do not want congress to get involved in the first place. they believe that legally and technically congress does not have to ok such a deal with iran simply because it is not a treaty. the white house tells us today that they are reassured by the rhetoric they're hearing from members of congress so far but the sales pitch will be happening -- well, pretty much exactly now. we're told that barack obama will be calling the four congressional leaders. those phone calls will include mitch mcconnell and john boehner, the two republican
2:33 pm
leaders in the house and the senate respectively, they are both against such a deal. we heard from the president directly. he addressed congress directly and said, do not kill a deal. but what this white house wants more than anything is not even to give congress that opportunity in the first place. tom: philip, next year will see a race for the white house once again. how do you envision these developments, this deal with iran impacting on that presidential race? philip: it seems a little bit early to be discussing a presidential race when it's so far away. but this will have an impact on any potential deal because what you'll see is all the republican candidates, more than anything, they will be under pressure to show their conservative credentials partisan conservative credentials is doing everything you can to be seen as an ally of israel and you have to be against this kind of a deal with iran. these are not just the
2:34 pm
republican presidential candidates, this will be anybody who wants to be on the ticket with them. want to run for president, this will really move a lot of the rhetoric against this kind of a deal. we also, of course, have to look at the other side the democratic side, all we know so far is we're pretty certain that presidential campaign by hillary clinton will start very soon indeed. she put out a statement yesterday backing a potential deal made by u.s. president obama. she said this, a potential agreement would strengthen the security of the united states, of israel and the region. the mention of israel is not innocent. one has to be seen as an ally of israel as a presidential candidate in the united states. hillary clinton certainly knows what she is doing here. but the timing by the white house, by the way, of this announcement could not be better for this president because congress is not in session right now, doesn't come back until the middle of the month. that is when the fireworks will really begin, and the presidential candidates, they haven't all declared yet, so
2:35 pm
there's a little bit of leeway here little bit of time to sell this deal to congress and to the american people. tom: well, thank you for that update. philip crowther in washington. thank you so much again. let's move on to other world news. officials in kenya says that the death toll from the university massacre is expected to rise above the current level of 148. this as people remain unaccounted for and dozens of others have been treated with serious injuries in hospital. the painful process of identifying the victims is now well under way. reporter: the bodies of those attack yesterday in the university. in the capital nairobi where some of the bodies were relatives, they waited in front of the morgue to see what happened to their loved one. >> my sister called my parents at home. she found my sister dead. ok. then we came here in the

morning. then we go inside, we find my sister is inside. she's already dead. reporter: where the attacks were, some families are given the devastating news while others are still in the dark like this young man who hasn't heard from his cousin since the attack. >> we haven't been able to trace here. so because [inaudible] we met with one of the workers here with a list of the casualties. unfortunately i haven't been able to trace her name. reporter: as christians celebrated good friday kenyans prayed for their country to find peace. tom: let's get a brief check of other stories we're following on "france 24," another provocation, say so a decision by north korea to test fire

the french interior minister today laid a wreath at the memorial to the march 24 germanwings plane crash victim. that crash happened in the french alps. while he paid a visit to that memorial close to the site of the wreckage where those 150 people lost their lives. while his visit there comes as more details started to emerge about the airliners final moment. according to the second black box data recorder which was found yesterday andreas increased the plane's speed which confirms the theory that he deliberately crashed that plane. that black box was brought straight to paris where it has been undergoing analysis. not for the first time the founder of france's far-right national front party has come under fire for making comments about the nazi gas chambers which called a mere detail of the second world war. but his own party including
2:39 pm
his own daughter, marin le pen has sdantsed themselves from those reports. reporter: cheered on by voters following sunday's local elections. the founder of france's far right national front has sparked controversy defending his position that nazi gas chambers were a detail of history. >> i meant what i said. gas chambers were a detail of the second world war, the detail -- the war was part of the gas chamber. >> do you stand by your comment? >> yes. i believe it's the truth. reporter: a statement he already made in 1987. >> i believe it's a detail of the history of the second world war. reporter: in recent years, the national front has tried to shed its anti-semitic image. his daughter and current party leader has sdantsed herself from the -- distanced herself

from the comments. the same with near provocation. some in the national front are worried he could cost them votes. >> he's not just another member. jean le pen was the president for 40 years. that said, let's be very clear. his comments are not at all in line with our ideas. this is his own personal opinion. reporter: le pen is now under investigation, accused of casting doubt of crimes against humanity. tom: now staying in france, n.p. is here in the capital of world fashion. voted in favor of banning ultra-thin models. the parliament gave its backing to a law that touched up photographs to state they have indeed been photoshopped. while employing models too thin risks a hefty fine and six months in prison. according to those who supported these new laws, the idea is about bringing the

general public back to reality with regard to body shapes and sizes. far nor now since i'm joined by antonio who is from the eating disorder research project, thank you very much indeed, for coming to see us. can i start by asking your organization's reaction to those laws proposed in the french parliament? antonio: we are deadly against because those laws not only tackle the problem of models and in general teens supermodels, they are part of a wide strategy from the french government to tackle eating disorders. especially online. one thing that is not mentioned is one of the amendments that was approved, one of the bills that was passed touches on the websites that are known as pro-ana website. ana means anorexia, so those websites are accused of glorifying anorexia. now, the problem is that those
2:42 pm
websites and those online communities are also places where people who are already affected by eating disorders go and look for help, go and look for friendship and usually they find a way to express themselves and sometimes they also find a way to get -- to get in touch with health professionals. so the situation is now that we are censoring and repressing those spaces of expression and spaces of freedom for eating disorder patients and this, of course destined to be a social disaster especially because if we -- if we focus as we do these days on supermodels and catwalks, what is the reality of people living with the disorder? it does not mean looking for glamour. it means trying to tackle everyday problems. tom: but don't we hear a lot of
2:43 pm
people arguing that the overwhelming presence of extremely thin unrealistically thin models in our magazines we read especially for the younger generation, puts a lot of pressure on them, it's an unreasonable amount of pressure and therefore it could be triggering eating disorders, do you agree with that and that is the intentions of this new law are good ones? antonio: media do not cause eating disorders. eating disorders are a very complex condition and they usually, you know, have genetic reasons and they have also environmental reasons and you know only focusing on media is not the solution, especially if we focus like, the french and peace want to do only on new media and by this i mean internet. again, the pro-ana websites which are the target of one part of those -- of this bill,
2:44 pm
well, they are not actually the problem here. the problem here is that the health care system is not sufficiently funded. it's tragically underfunded and we need to create new skills in health care professionals. we need to help them create bridges with, in some cases communities of people living with disorders and those communities are sometimes online. they are hosted online. tom: let me just get this straight, because i am clearly not understood the broader arguments up until this point but i was given to believe that the -- there are eating disorders and there are young people who are very much affected by what they read in magazines and see on -- in advertising campaigns. because it is completely unreasonable to expect people to be the size of the models in those ads and therefore shouldn't those ads be banned?
2:45 pm
antonio: everybody is affected what we see in magazines. you and me is affected because we are we have unrealistic expectations of body shapes. this is one clear indication of the fact that of course the environment, the media environment is not the cause. again, it can be one of the factors, one of the contributing factors but it's not a cause as such and, again, do not let -- let's not focus exclusively on media and advertising. again, the law tackles one specific aspect. again, it's the internet. and that's the thing that is usually and unfortunately for us in france here in the last few months stigmatized demonized and consider to be the cause of all evil and it is not. again, it can be also -- for people looking for help to go and find help, to go and find information and to go and

sometimes get in touch with specialized services or hospitals or health care professionals that can help them with their eating disorders. tom: thank you very much indeed for sharing that with us. from the eating disorder research project. well, it is time now for a check of the top business news stories. william hind brand is here. -- hildebrand is here with us. let's start with good news out of the greek capital. tell us more. william: it looks like an encourage really sign that they could squash over a greek default. they will pay the international monetary fund on time. state revenues in march were higher than had been expected. on april 9 it owes the i.m.f. 450 million euros. they are in negotiations over the future reforms package it hopes of securing more aid before it runs out of crash. -- of cash. tom: well, onto the u.s. while the jobs report -- william:

responsibility in the wake of this tragic event. "the daily mail" is one of the numerous news outlets of a germanwings flight yesterday. one of the passengers on the berlin-paris flight took to twitter. here's his twit, it goes on to twitlonger, it allows more than 140 characters. so hugh kelly says as he got on the plane, they through a caution to the cockpit and the captain came out in person and made a speech in three languages to reassure passengers. this hugh roche kelly ends his testimonial saying, i can't help but have enormous respect for him so well done, that man. the story touched a lot of people. this user says. this user says wonderful,

character, honesty intimacy, bravo. now, it's important to note that another germanwings pilot had made a similar speech just three days after the crash. brita english was traveling from hamburg to colon on march 27, that's three days after the crash and the pilot came out of the cabin before takeoff and made a similar speech promising the passengers and crew that they'd be safe with him. tom: ok. interesting. let's move on now. back to france, staying in france rather, because there's news out of the fashion industry, is that what you picked up for us next? shona: yes. we are going to talk about this anorexia story. it was prompted by the death of a model, a french model. she died of anorexia in 2010. that's her photo. so the first law that was passed banned models that has a

body mass index or b.m.i. under 18 from working in the fashion industry and those who employ models will spend 18 months in prison and a fine. the national union of modeling agencies says it regrets the measure. the statement was relayed in lesechos. determining a model is anorexia is not enough. you have to see if their hair is falling out if their teeth are in good condition, if they have psychological issues. the union says some people are naturally thin, like one french model and her entire family. apparently they're just all tall and thin. what many women would dream of having in their genes. and then finally the union says the measure will hurt french modeling agencies at the expense of international agencies. tom: of course france isn't the only country to brought in such
2:55 pm
legislation. shona: italy, spain and israel all ban models that are too thin from the catwalk in 2013. but french law goes a step further by punishing websites that promote being too thin or anorexic. there's a one-year prison sentence and 10,000 eurofine for that. but this -- euro fine for that. but this french slate article claims that targeting these pro-ana websites as they're called penalizes those who suffer from anorexia more than they target the actual illness itself. in fact, this psychoanalyst speaking to one online says specialists in anxieties related to food and eating disorders says a simple law like this one, it's not going to change people's perception of what's beautiful and it also doesn't target the actual root of these problems which is depression, anxiety and other factors. he says that these websites -- in fact, your guest was saying
