to find a new set of logos. offials say it carries some risks. and as japanese cats and dogs assume greater importance in the lives of their owners, businesses catering to pet fitness are envisioning a healthy future. people in china are celebrating after their leaders pulled off a lavish military parade through the heart of beijing. it was a show of strength and power in the air and on the ground to commemorate the 70th anniversary of world war ii and what they call their victory over japan. nhk world has more. >> reporter: 12,000 soldiers marched past teen mann square. they are marching what they call the victory of chinese people

over japanese aggression and the war. it's the first time china's leaders have held a military parade on this day. a surprise for president xi jinping. in an opening speech he announced his nation would cut the number of troops by 300,000. >> translator: we will never see predominance in the world. adopt and a expansionist policy. we will never impose the tragic experience of our country on the people of other nations. >> reporter: security was tight with armed police throughout the capital. authorities even traffic for weeks. main road leading to the square

was closed late last night until noon today. but it's open now. people in beijing have welcomed the parade. >> translator: i felt energy coming out from my inside. >> translator: i'm happy with what our president announced today. i think that china is not supposed to press other countries by the size of our military. i want my country to play a central role in promoting globally peace. >> the government has designated a three-day national holiday around the parade. on the diplomatic front, the event has drawn mibed responses. leaders from countries, but no senior officials from the united states, britain or many southeast asian countries.

reconciliation. he said he's confident the two countries will continue to deepen their ties in the decades to come. the organizers of the 2020 tokyo olympics and paralympics say they are planning a more open competition to find a new set of logos. they scrapped the original ones over allegations of plagiarism and copy right violations. nhk has more. >> reporter: posters of the controversial logos, they are being taken down everywhere in tokyo, including airports and government buildings. the. >> translator: the current cig was caused by the committee's closed door selection policy. i want new emblems to be created with a more open process. >> reporter: the organizing

committee plans to do just that. they want to choose new emblems as soon as possible. the previous competition was restricted to designers who had already won multiple awards. art director san okay who designed the logos denies plagiarism. they picked his out of 104 entries. they later found out there was a similar logo. the committee asked sano to revise the original emblems. sano is set to have come up with the final emblems after making changes twice. this process was not open to the public. we ask foreign visitors in tokyo to do up with their own ideas for a new logo. >> tokyo tower. >> shrine, mount fuji.

protect declining stock of two popular fish. gene otani joins us with more on that and a wrap up of today's business headlines. gene. >> thanks, james. delegates from pacific rim countries have agreed to consider emergency catch limits for bluefin tuna. experts estimate suspensive fishing has reduced the population of the fish to a third of what it was 20 years ago. the delegates spent four days together. they backed a japanese proposal to draw up new rules by next year. the rules would impose strict emergency catch limits in a total ban when there could be a major drop in stocks of young tuna. members of a committee already set a target for stocks. they want to nearly double the amount of adult tuna to 43,000 tons by 2024. they kpoes catch limits for this year for young fish weighing less than 30 kilograms. japanese government officials asking for help to protect

another fish that has a long history in their cuisine. they are concerned heavy catches of saury in the north pacific are threatening numbers. they say it's time to introduce restrictions. >> it's essential we use fishery resources in a sustainable manner while also protecting the marine ecosystem. >> sato was addressing china, taiwan, canada. officials from the u.s. took part as observers. taiwanese and chinese fishers have increased saury, japan has doubled take in the last five years. last year japanese brought in 225,000 tons, down by a third from their hall seven years ago. that's when it reached the highest point in three years. many say the decline is stocks is threatening their livelihood.

others are concerned about the spike in prices. a check on the mark. a late rally pulled u.s. markets out of negative territory and that helped stocks in tokyo rebound on thursday. for details we go to our business reporter at the tokyo stock exchange. >> reporter: the rebound gave early boost and that carried investors through the day. the shanghai market is closed for a long holiday weekend. while fears remain over china's economic slowdown there's a bit of relief from the recent volatility. the nikkei average gained half a percent, to end at 18,182. the broader topix is up 0.6%. leading the gains was mobile carrier ntt docomo. it jumped more than 4% thank to a rating upgrade on its stock based on stronger earnings forecast. shares of electric motormaker nidec up 1.7% on news the

here is a look at some of the other business stories we're following. federal reserve policymakers say u.s. economy has continued expanding across most regions and sectors. their latest beige book report shows manufacturing activity was mostly positive through august. auto sales increased in most districts. wages rose in some professions. but the policymakers warn slowdown is hurting demand for high tech and ear product. they will meet to discuss movement and china's situation before deciding whether to raise rates. u.s. justice department said japanese nec tokin will plead guilty to conspire to fix prices. they say they rigged prices for computers and home appliances between 2002 and 2013. they say the company will pay a fine of more than $13 million and has agreed to cooperate in

the investigation. more than 20 million cats and dogs in japan are kept as pets, and they are taking on the same importance as children in the lives of many owners in the first installment of two-part series of trends in japanese pet care. we're looking at the pets people are taking to keep their cherished companions in top form. nhk world reports. >> reporter: at this gym, some of the customers look a bit unusual. there's a dog on a balance ball, a dog swimming with all its strength and another learning to jump over a hurdle. this fitness center for dogs opened last month. hiromi comes here once a week.

>> translator: a lot of dogs don't get to move around very much. we see opportunity in meeting a growing need. >> reporter: a major mobile service provider is getting into the canine health business. this device allows owners to keep track of their pet's condition. the unit fits on the dog's collar. a built in sensor protects the animal's movements. the owner can use a smartphone to monitor the dog's status even from a distance. the device transmits behavioral data to a central server and then to the user's smartphone. the animal's daily activities are summarized in a graph. any variation from the normal pattern could mean there's something wrong with the dog. owners can enter the type of

quantity of the pet food and intake will be calculated automatically. should a dog's activity level drop, the owner will receive a veterinarian approved like this. the device cost about $135 plus service charges of about $60 a year. the developer sees a demand for this kind of finely tuned approach. >> translator: people are investing more and more in their pets year after year as if they were their children. this is becoming a very big market. >> businesses like these are hoping the desire of pet lovers to keep their animals trim and fit will result in healthy profit in the years to come.

nhk world. and in our next installment of pet trends, we'll report on initiatives designed to help elderly people guarantee continuing care for their animal companions. that's it for business news, james, i'm going to hand it back to you. >> gene otani from our business desk. the operator of fukushima nuclear plant began pumping up brown water from around crippled reactors. the move is aimed at water flowing into the facilities. 300 tons of groundwater flow in each day. on thursday workers began pumping water from 20 wells. they aim to pump up to 200 tons through the day and store it in tanks. they will later process the water to meet government standards so they can release it into the ocean. utility officials, local authorities and fishermen have yet to agree on when to release the treated water but it will likely be done later this month of the operator claims the drainage will cut the amount of

water that is contaminated by about half. wildfires are continuing to burn in parts of sibera. jonathan oh is here with the details. jonathan. >> healtho, the dry weather that continue to exist over sibera and southern portions of russia is contributing to these wildfires, whenever you have dry conditions and have it continuing, that's when have you these problems. let me show you some of these pictures right here coming out of the region. you can see here it's burning in many locations, 1,000 firefighters involved in this particular process and even volunteers on the ground level are getting involved to try to help fan these flames and slow them down because they really are causing some problems. now, it doesn't look like the dry weather is going to be in place until this weekend. but at least as the clouds roll in there will be a chance for rain and hopefully help the firefighter in the region. now, the opposite story is

taking place further south into southern portions of china where we have a low pressure system and will a stationary front keeping the area very wet. flooding concerns because of that. the front extends into japan. we had a cloudy day and a rainy day for a good portion of the country. this is going to continue to be a part of the story as we go throughout the next day or so. now, once the front starts to clear the area, we should see a little bit more sunshine by the weekend in tokyo and also western portions of japan may also see sunshine as early as friday. here is a look at the forecast as we go around east asia. wet weather in tokyo, 90 on friday, taipei will bring thunderstorms into the picture, beijing also will see wet weather on friday. as we look at the forecast for europe, we do have a low pressure system near the scandinavian peninsula and it doesn't know what to do with

itself. it continues to remain over the area but it is causing progression of cold front that continues to push towards the east. a trough is also in place right near the front what that trough is, it is a dipping area of the fasters core of the wind and higher levels of the atmosphere. that zooms towards the north and east, we see very unstable weather in places. understorms expected from central to southwestern portions of the continent. meanwhile high pressure toward the east bringing in very warm temperatures. some of these locations expected to see highs in the mid-30s. 30 degrees as far north as kiev and then flip side of that warm air in the colder territory you'll see a high of 18 degrees with a high of rain on thursday and rain extending from berlin and also into paris. as you wrap things up with a look at north america, we are seeing moisture coming into the desert southwest as the american monsoon continues to take place. we also have a cold front that's

pushing through where low pressure system was sitting near the pacific northwest. we may even see a possibility of some flurries in this area because of the cold air pocket that's rolling through. so be prepared for possibly seeing that drain the later evening periods and overnight period. during the daytime hours we're seeing temperatures in the teens with rain and thunderstorms. very warm temperatures extend further toward the east. look at the four-day forecast here. we're executiving highs in the upper 20s for locations in the east as we go into the weekend. hope you have a good day wherever you are. here is the extended outlook.
