i'm checking in and out if we have any word there -- no, it doesn't look like we will be able to cross back to her. we will bring her into one of our bulletins later on. let's turn our eye now to business news. "france 24's" marcus karlsson is here in studio. let start with news out of the united states. >> investors have been asking for months when u.s. interest rates will be heading higher, and today, this friday, we got through a piece of economic data that could shed more light on this issue. the u.s. economy added 173,000 jobs during the month of august. that was fewer than expected. but looking beyond the headline, analysts say the report was fairly strong. that is probably because of this number right here. the unemployment rate in the united states dipped to 5.1% in august, which is the lowest we have seen since april of 2008. at the same time, previous
2:48 pm
estimates of jobs added in june and july were revised higher, and on average over the past three months, the u.s. economy has added more than it00,000 jobs. on top of that, wages are heading higher, which is seen as a sign of a strengthening labor market at least by some. some say that a strong jobs report could prompt the federal reserve to raise interest rates in the united states. that is why this jobs report was so closely scrutinized this month. american rates are near zero, and the fed hasn't hiked those rates for nine years now. there has been much speculation whether a hike is in the cards when the federal reserve on its governing council meets in two weeks. for more analysis of what the fed may do, i spoke earlier to angus campbell at essex pro. he said the jobs report is a mixed bag.
2:49 pm
>> the actual headline figure, which the number of jobs created over the last month is the key number. it is only 173,000. the federal reserve had been hoping to see consistently over ,000 month on month. is just -- consistently over 200,000 month on month. if they want to kick it up, they have to see morrow bust job creation than that. yes, the unemployment rate did fall, and yes, average earnings rates are better. but the u.s. economy is not going at full guns yet. it is not creating enough jobs to warrant a rate hike yet. then you have to consider also on top of that the recent financial market turmoil as well, which they definitely
2:50 pm
have to consider. >> but you say you don't believe in a separate hike. we are steegmans the dollar rising. we have seen shares trading lower, which seems to suggest that the market thinks that the fed could go in september? >> yeah, there is still a chance, of course. for me, i don't think -- and consistently here at fx pro we have been calling for a much later rate hike than this year. if it does come this year, we still believe december is almost a little bit too early. we think the first hike will probably come in the first part of 2016. you have to look at the conditions. yes, the labor market is good in the u.s. the economy is growing, but it is nowhere near the level they would be happy with to start raising rates. erging market have shown

nervousness. the i.m.f. said they are very nervous about central banks raising their interest rates at this time. >> let's bring you up to date with the stock market this hour. we have seen the u.s. indexes trading sharply lower on the back of this jobs report. the belief seems to be that the fed may hike interest rates in september, or at least that the chances or the risk of the fed hiking the interest rate in september is increased. that is why we are seeing the dollar trading higher. we have seen though in the past hour or so that the american indexes have paired their previous losses. the dow jones is down by 1.75% at this hour. in europe we saw read -- we saw red across the board on the
