of a new prime minister. the protesters blocked streets. police estimated the crowds at 20,000, but pro-russian organizers say 100,000 responded to their call. the protesters are demanding the approval be rescinded. the russian state news agency says protesters forced their way into parliament and clashed with police, leaving 31 people injured. moldova shares a border with ukraine. since the fall of the soviet union, its people have been split between pro-russia and pro-europe factions. moldovaens are frustrated with a poorly performing economy and corruption. zika is spreading. the travelers visited guiana.

1.5 million people are estimated to have been infected. there was a spike in incidence of the disease last year. the virus causes fever, headache and muscle ache that last up to a week. health officials say the zika virus may be behind a sudden increase in micro selfly, a symptom in which infants are born with unusually small heads. almost 4,000 reported cases. the officials say mothers of the children born with underdeveloped skulls were infected with virus while they were pregnant. the united states is also reporting a number of infections in travelers returning from regions struggling with zika outbreaks. the u.s. centers for disease control and prevention have advised pregnant women to avoid travel to zika-prone areas.

thailand has confirmed its second case of the deadly mers. the country's health ministry says a 71-year-old man from oman is being treated at a bangkok hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. he traveled to thailand with a relative on friday looking for treatment for fever and coughing. a total of 37 people believed to have been in contact with the man are being monitored for signs of infection. they include hospital staff and travelers who sat on the same plane. thailand's first mers case was confirmed in june of last year. investors have been feeling the pain this year, but many are finally getting relief after seeing another bounce in the tokyo markets. gene otani joins us from the business desk for more on the latest on that and other headlines. gene? >> thanks, james. market players will be breathing a bit easier after watching the

nikkei start the week on a firm note. they've now had two good sessions in a row. it's the first time they've been able to say that in 2016. for the details, we go to our business reporter at the tokyo stock exchange. >> share prices in tokyo climbed back over the 17,000 level right at the open. we saw mixed trade data out of japan, but the nikkei managed to extend the gains it made on friday. let's take a look at the closing levels this monday, january 25th. the nikkei gain 0.9%, closing at 17,110. the broader topix also rose 1.3% to 1,392. the rebound in oil prices is a big factor and japan petroleum was up after u.s. crude rallied

around 10% on friday. one of the top performers has been japan tobacco. shares are up 7.4% after the firm announced plans to raise the price for one of its main cigarette brands. it was a different story over at toshiba which suffered heavy losses. the company is still recovering from last year's accounting scandal. and media reports say it plans to sell part of its chip business and is already taking bids. now while we're looking at embattled firms, air bags maker takata is down 9.8% following news of yet another recall in the u.s., this time for 5 million vehicles. the announcement follows reports that a tenth death has been linked to a faulty takata air bag. the bank of japan will hold its policy meeting this week. some suspect the boj could consider additional easing.

i'm reporting from the tokyo stock exchange. other benchmarks benefitted from the higher oil prices. in china, the shanghai roetz 0.75%. closing at 2938. energy-related shares led the gain, but analysts say trading volume was low as many investors were wary of volatility in the market. the hang seng advanced 1.4%. many were glad to see a rebound in the dollar. sydney's index ended above the 5,000 level at a two and a half week high. japan's annual wage negotiations are getting under way. talks are focussed on whether people can be compensated more for a third straight year. the japan business federation kicked off a two-day forum with the japanese trade union

confederation rengo. >> translator: companies must brkaway fr the deflationary mind-set and increase profits through aggressive management. an i'd like to ask them to make the utmt effort to raise wages. create more jobs and boost investment in equipment, research and development. >> the secretary explained that they are urging to raise the workers' annual income, not necessarily base pay. but rengo's president stressed the importance of raising the monthly base pay. he said they will focus on improving working conditions. full-fledged negotiations start next month after the unions present their demands, most companies are expected to respond in mid-march.

a nhk survey suggests more companies are wary about raising wages this year. this comes amid volatility in stock markets and concerns over china and other economies. nhk polled 100 major firms in december and january. all of them responded. 54 companies said they would consider boosting their employees' income in one way or another. that's 17 fewer firms than in the previous year's survey. among those favoring hikes, 18 are considering a raise in base wages. that's less than half the number in last year's survey. japan's trade balance in december returned to the black for the first time in two months, due mainly to lower oil prices. officials at the finance ministry say the trade surplus was more than $1.1 billion. imports shrank by 18% as the value of crude oil and liquid

gas was half that from a year earlier. the figures also show that even though the trade balance returned to the black, it wasn't entirely positive. japan's exports also saw a decline of 8% year on year. that was the third straight month of falls. shipments of steel and semi conductors to china were down. the trade balance for 2015 posted a deficit of nearly $24 billion. staying in the red for the fifth straight year. still, the cheaper crude oil prices have helped shrink that figure. political and business leaders from around the world sat down last week at the world economic forum in switzerland to discuss issues, including the japanese economy. japan's top financial leader explained that the country is on a moderate recovery track and participants offered suggestions on how to make the recovery sustainable. nhk world reports. >> reporter: on the final day of the conference, bank of japan

governor kuroda attended a session on the prospect of the global economy. he said the level of market turbulence at the beginning of this year was stronger than anticipated. kuroda also said the japanese economy will continue to grow by 1% to 1.5%. >> the economy has been making a moderate recovery, and we would expect this kind of growth will continue for some time. >> reporter: one of the biggest challenges facing japan is how to end long years of deflation. some economists say the first task is getting rid of the deflationary mind-set. unfortunately, the expectations of the japanese public, including corporate managers, people who pay the wages of the japanese workforce, i think, are still somewhat mired in the deflationary mind set of the past. so i think that's the key issue here.

asia. media in taiwan say as many as 60 people may have died at the result of a sudden cold snap. the temperature in taipei city dropped to 4 degrees celsius on sunday. that's the lowest in 44 years. record cold was also registered in six other locations. on the subtropical island most homes lack proper heating. several were taken to the hospital experiencing shortness of breath. people in hong kong experienced 3 degrees celsius. the lowest the mercury has gone in nearly six decades. local authorities kept kindergartens and schools closed on monday as they're not equipped with heaters. some of my relatives in okinawa were not only shivering in the low temperatures but were astonished when it hailed the other day. sayaka mori joins us. >> temperatures are expected to warm up as we go into the next

several days, but yet fatal weather affected many parts of's yeah. cold air mass frigid enough to turn any kind of precipitation to snow covered much of china, the north of taiwan and much of japan including the okinawa region on the weekend. and because of that, we saw the first snowfall in history in okinawa region. and naha sa a morning low of about 6 degrees. in taipei dozens of people were killed due to hypothermia. in hong kong, 3 degrees, making it the gocoldest in 60 years or so. the temperatures are expected to warm up for the next several days. in shanghai, the temperature will be 6 degrees. is expected to go to the 20 degree mark as we go into the

next several days. so under such conditions you can sily cat a co. so please take care of your health. now in terms of precipitation, it's clear across many parts of china and the korean peninsula, but northern japan, from the hokuriku region, you will continue to see snowfall, probably an additional 40 centimeters expected for the next 24 hours or so. now a state of emergency was declared in new york state and surrounding areas due to blizzard conditions. this was the scene coming out of new york. cars were completely buried in snow, 68 centimeters of snow fell, making it the second snowiest on record and philadelphia had the snowfall in just two days. washington, d.c., 56.8 centimeters of snow fell, and that's the second snowiest on record. the heaviest snow fell in west virginia. traffic accidents occurred and

several people were killed due to snowy conditions, but some animals and people enjoyed the unusual sight. president obama's two dogs, beau and sunny were found prancing around the white house lawn after a snowy weekend. they are so cute. meanwhile, a massive snowball fight unfolded in washington. 60 centimeters of snow fell within the city over the weekend. now good news is that the snow has let up. and, as you can see, it's sunny over there and precipitation is all gone across most of the northeastern united states. two systems across the mid portions of the u.s. are expected to move into the northeast coast. you'll see another round of snowy weather as we go into the weekend. temperatures will be as follows. 2 grees in washington. and across the north, partly sunny skies on your monday.
