and, the going gets tough in the tour de france as the writers head into the mountains for the first time. thank you for joining us. his name was micah johnson, and afghan war veteran and his dying words that he wanted to kill white police officers. he is the focus of an investigation into the killing of five policeman and wounding of seven others in dallas, texas. johnson said he acted alone in a killing spree described as the deadliest day for law-enforcement since 9/11.

what started as a protest against police violence turned into deadly shootings and a standoff in a parking garage in downtown dallas. >> i was walking and a guy just ended shooting. there had to be five or six cops being shot down. 4 police have identified one suspect, micah johnson. it is unclear if he was the only shooter. he was killed after several hours of negotiations. >> the suspect said he was upset about black lives matter. he said he was upset about the recent police shootings. the suspect said he was upset that white people. the suspect stated he wanted to kill white people. especially white police officers.

wiwith how a peaceful protest turned into a violent shooting. >> this is a highly unusual shooting in the united states, aimed specifically at law enforcement. what has been the reaction in washington? >> the reaction has been the same, outrage. this is a heinous crime. it was committed by a lone wolf although the investigation has not yet determined whether somebody may have helped him. everybody in the country, not just washington, not just politicians is condemning thiss. >> the dead suspect has been named as a veteran, micah johnson. has that changed the narrative?

>> it adds a complicated puzzle piece. it looks like they retaliate against violence. they were protesting the shooting of two black americans. it looks like this was the reason why he committed this crime. americans who serve in the army and the armed forces are considered heroes in this country. he was decorated for his service and this raises the question, is this a case of ptsd? is veterans care good enough? what about mental health? who is able to buy guns in this country? it makes the whole picture more

complicated and not simple. >> with a lot of response from congress people. a lot calling for unity and reconciliation in the country. what about trump and clinton? >> they are very quiet. they tweeted on social media and they both moore and for the families, with the families and the police offices. we will see what tonight will bring, whether there will be peaceful contest -- peaceful process -- peaceful protests or more escalation.

>> i'm joined by joshua. he is a political scientist. he has contacts with the black lives matter movement in the united states. this is no supply there is tension between law enforcement and black people in the country. the shootings are different. would you say that is the case? >> we see an exclamation -- escalation of the level of violence. they are targeting white officers. he said he was upset about the killings. he also said he was upset about black lives matter. this is more about alone wolf

attack. we see messaging already from pundits linking black lives matter to what happened. this is important to distinguish. >> nevertheless. there is so much anger in the country. black people feel as if they are targeted by law enforcement. it is a feeling of injustice. do you think it was a matter of time before there was a violent approach? >> i do think in the u.s., there are so many strains coming together. we have issues of gun control, veterans. on the other hand, we do see the debate shifting in different

directions. black lives matter and other movements are having clear as a lessee -- policy proposals. civil rights movement was really about getting recognitions as full citizens. now people are saying these rights do not protect us from systemic and institutional racism. we had a thousand people killed by law enforcement. you see a huge discrepancy here. this is a systemic issue and a calls for a clinical solution. >> we will see if those policy will bring any traction. thank you.

4 let's turn to other news now. nato is bolstering its forces with the face of an increasingly intense russia. troops have been moved to estonia, led the way and you and poland. it is being billed as one of the most important nato summits since the end of the cold war. >> three signatures and one common goal, to pull resources. they say they are stronger together than they are alone. >> our security is interconnected and we face a range of unprecedented challenges. separately neither nato nor the european union can fully address
