5:34 am
morning, who is that running mate? aboute the headlines are something completely different. it was an extraordinary moment here at the convention. it was supposed to be all about mike pence giving the biggest speech of his lifetime here on stage, a speech that went rather well. by something so extraordinary that it will go down into the history books. ted cruz got a lot of standing ovations and applause because it looked like his speech was about uniting the party. that was the content of it. there was that one missing element. the endorsement of donald trump that everyone else who has been speaking on stage came up with. there was not one in the end. he called on voters to vote with their conscience. in other words if they agree with what ted cruz stood for they should not be voting for donald trump with the implied message.
5:35 am
started booingum ted cruz. it went from wide acclaim from boos all over. that is exactly when donald trump decided to make his entrance. before tedt a minute cruz finished his speech. trying to upstage something that was clearly bad for the campaign. that is also extraordinary. donald trump has made an appearance on every single day of the convention so far. on stage with his wife melania. and with mikesage pence yesterday. it was just a very short moment. it's not exactly look like there
5:36 am
was a lot of chemistry between the two of them. a lot of things are going wrong for donald trump and the republican party at this convention. which leads us to ask, what could possibly go wrong on this final day when donald trump makes his except speech? >> thank you, philip. a three-month state of emergency overnight in turkey. authorities say it will allow them to take swift effective action against those responsible for last week's failed push. the turkish president says the move is fully in line with the country's constitution. our correspondent joins us now. what exactly does the state of emergency mean? basically it means the cabinet can rule by decree. the cabinet will have the force of law. parliament will debate those decrees but it will not be able to cancel them.
5:37 am
in other words the government can do whatever it likes in terms of suspending or curtailing human rights and freedoms as it deems necessary. i should point out that parliament is a few hundred meters behind me on the right-hand side. it is just behind those trees. it is expected to approve the state of emergency formerly -- formally today. but it has already entered into force. the decrees it will cool buy, the state of emergency came into force when it was published in the official gazette at 1:00 this morning. seen ever since the failed push last friday night the purges, a huge number of purges throughout turkey.
5:38 am
these must be extremely worrying times for people opposed to the role of erdogan. >> they certainly are. there is an enormous sweep against people who appear to have done nothing wrong except they are suspected of not being government supporters. the government has suspended or dismissed or revoked the licenses of some 60,000 civil servants in various categories. the justice ministry, finance ministry, education ministry. teachers licenses have been revoked. cases it has demanded the resignation of more than 1500 deans of universities. some of them are party supporters. one cannot make sense of this

widespread dismissal. it is veritably a purge rather than a crackdown on defense. in addition to that somewhere between 6000 and 10,000 people are under arrest on suspicion of actively taking part in the c oup. withy can launcha coup 6000-10,000 people involved. the plot would leak by the time you had so many people in the know. yesterday erdogan told a television channel that the sweep is not yet over. >> thank you for joining us. here in france, the interior minister has ordered an inquiry into policing on the night of the july 14 attack in nice.

5:45 am
when things died down after the umbrella revolution petered out, things went to the wayside. people started to refocus on getting their economy back up and running. ofis struggling because cross-border trade between hong kong and the mainland. now we have issues such as these booksellers who were detained in hong kong or on the mainland side and we were not told about it -- it's possible that this sentencing coming up could restart that. we will see. >> thank you for joining us. you're watching france 24. ted cruz steals the show at the republican party convention in another display of disunity. the texas senator was booed after failing to endorse donald trump.

later. just what happened with the bank of england meeting, we were expecting a rate cut. and then mark carney said there's going to be a massive quantitative easing coming from that but that didn't happen. if the market is expecting any similar reaction today perhaps there will be a surprise because the ecb will not do anything today. we still need to see a lot of data coming in. they wanted to see what are the consequences of that exact data? that data yesterday dropped confidence in germany. it dropped off a cliff. just showing there is no consumer confidence coming up. the bank of england are literally cherry picking the numbers to reassure the market that perhaps brexit isn't really
5:48 am
that much of a grave concern even though it is. because the data hasn't really shown the exact consequences. i think this is the reason the european central bank perhaps will not do anything today with respect to their quantitative easing. going in september which is a very crucial meeting, we are expecting them to come up with another sort of quantitative easing. >> left look at how the markets are trading. -- let's look at how the markets are trading. european shares turning lower after comments from the bank of japan ruled out using so-called helicopter money in efforts to boost the economy. that's a system of direct money transfers considered an extreme form of monetary stimulus. shares among the biggest fallers on european market led by easyjet and lufthansa.
