let's get straight to our top story out of the u.s. having a chair problem here. u.s. vice presidential candidates went head-to-head last night in their only debate. mike hence did his best to remain called and steady despite frequent attack -- remain calm and steady, despite frequent attacks by tim kaine. both candidates interrupted and insulted each other and their running mates. washington our correspondent, philip crowther. you were watching the debate last night. how did they do? philip: or rather, how did their running mates do? this was a debate that was largely about hillary clinton and donald trump, though it was of course their running mates who were on stage for the only time during this election season of 2016. there was one clear role for tim kaine, the senator from virginia , relatively unknown by people abroad but also by many people
5:33 am
in the united states. that role was to attack mike pence, the governor of indiana, and donald trump's running mate, as much as possible. he tried to paint the two with pressuring mike pence to react to some of the more controversial statements and policy ideas that have come from the donald trump campaign over the last few weeks, and indeed months. for example, he challenged mike pence to react to what seemed to be a relatively tight relationship at times between russian president vladimir and donald trump, or at least liking vladimir putin by donald trump. and the donald trump proposed ban on muslims entering the united states. mike pence managed to deflect most of them and came across pretty measured and calm. both campaigns this morning
5:34 am
seemed to think they came out victorious. genie: both sides are saying they won. the big question is who really won the debate. has there been any word on that, and will the debate change anything? philip: vice presidential to change not tend much unless there is a big mistake by one of the candidates. there was not really that one soundbite that will live forever , that will influence this election. voters are still undecided. i mentioned farmville before the debate. one lady cannot decide between donald trump and hillary clinton. those people do exist. but i do not think they will make up their minds based on a vice presidential debate. in terms of the narrative -- and that is an important thing in u.s. elections -- there obviously are two different ones put forth by the respective campaigns. tweeted and live said he clearly thought mike pence had one bank will this

one. -- that mike pence had won. that mikeinton said pence could not defend the decisions made by his boss, donald trump. the first of the next two president debates will be on sunday in st. louis. the last one is in las vegas. that is the last moment when voters will be making up their minds. genie: it is just five weeks away now. philip crowther reporting us from washington. hurricane matthew is swirling on toward the bahamas and the southeastern coast of florida. killed at has already least nine people and forced hundreds of to flee. the worst damage has been in the poorest country in the americas, haiti. our correspondent reports. >> it is the worst caribbean

syria. an announcement that has made washington nervous. >> it is not clear why the placement of an f 300 in syria has faced such a stir from our western colleagues. it causes no threat -- it poses no threat to anyone. >> the f 300 system will reinforce russia passed offense of the syrian coast. it already has a system in place at an ever based just north. announcement comes a day after the u.s. halted talks with russia. on military cooperation in syria. washington has grown increasingly critical of russia's actions. on monday, secretary of state john kerry blamed moscow for the failure. john kerry: we will continue to pursue a meaningful, sustainable, and forcible cessation of hostilities throughout the country.
5:39 am
russia knows exactly what it needs to do in order to get that cessation implemented in a fair and reasonable way. >> russia has been accused of indiscriminately bombing aleppo as it joins an offensive to regain control. and hasladimir addressed parliament just days after the u.s. pulled out of talks with russia on syria. this was his first speech since his party swept the parliamentary election in russia last month. for more on what he had to say, i am joined by armen georgian. what about international issues? what did he have to say about them? : there was nothing explosive on the situation with the west, syria, or ukraine. this was about domestic policy. but he returned to a favorite theme of his, which is that russia does not impose its ideas or governments on other
5:40 am
countries. let's take a look at that. when we talk about nations having the right to be strong, we're not saying that they should not have great power ambitions. we never impose anything on anybody. i have no intention of doing so. is insideof russia our people. >> what he is saying there is that the west does not -- that the west does impose its governance on other countries, and there is a clear reference in that statement, in that changete, to the regime agenda, as russia sees it. this is really the source of these problems in syria, ukraine -- one of the sources, i should that- russia possibility the west is trying to get rid of certain leaders and put in place western friendly ones. starting with saddam hussein in 2003, then muammar gaddafi, now

bashar al-assad in syria. if you look at the russian foreign minister's statement yesterday about the breakdown in talks between the u.s. and russia over syria, there is a notion that statement that says the u.s. is pursuing a much desired regime change in damascus. this is really a long-running -- a very long-standing and deep and between the west russia. latimer putman came back to this theme. genie: this is mostly focused on domestic issues speaking there in front of parliament. what don't -- what tone did set in the addressed parliament? : this is the full session that he made since the september 18 elections, which gave the pro-kremlin party the biggest majority it had. turnout in that election was just 48%, so it was a big slump
5:42 am
from 50% in the previous election. a lot of people said we are not going to vote because it is obvious united russia is going to get a big majority. there is also a sense that being an mp is sort of like a gravy train. of course, that sentiment exists in other countries. but clearly there is a problem of disconnect between people and elites, and this is something that president clinton implicitly acknowledged in that speech, saying parliament should become a platform for dialogue between mp's and citizens. so essentially what he was saying was, you have got to get out there and start connecting with voters. genie: armen georgian, thank you so much for that. in france, the far right pen --nd jean-marie le

thomas waterhouse has more. thomas: it was on national television in april 2015 that marine le pen first openly ,eclared war against her father say that his statement were damaging to her as leader and to the whole party. >> jean-marie le pen should basically show wisdom. he should face the consequences of the trouble that he himself is causing and maybe end his political responsibilities. thomas: when the 87-year-old founder of the movement once again referred to the gas chambers of the whole a cast -- of the holocaust as "a detail of history," his daughter said enough was enough, accusing her father of trying to sabotage her by talk to find the national front. a family death match the somewhat rumbled the party. >> i should have the same belief as marie that these marks have

pound. looking back at sterling's trading history, with the dollar, the last time germany was at this level was in 1985 because of a record strength in the dollar at the time. the pound at that point dropped , the lowest it has been in the history of the two currencies. i am saying a big fall in the value of sterling could be even more prolonged. it may last for that much longer. we have been looking at who wins and who loses. our correspondent has details. >> and blessing for some and a curse for others. >> what we have seen in the months after the brexit vote is a very sharp depreciation of sterling, which is intensified in the last few days as a timetable for triggering article

economists do not consider this the best way to measure the size sure tomies, but it is cause a blow to at least one side of the channel. genie: indeed. thank you for that look at the business news. it is time for "the press review." now atake a look grabbing headlines around the world with florence villeminot. lots of focus on u.s. politics today, and on the u.s. vice presidential debate last night, the only one in this campaign. flo: it was supposed to be the battle of the nice guys, but mike pence and tim kaine got a little nasty about taxes. particularly donald trump us failure to release his tax return. you might notice the word "vanilla" in the title. it means normal, conventional, a little boring, and it kind of sums up the reaction to this vice presidential debate. genie: the papers were not particularly excited about this debate.
5:52 am
even before it happened, they hinted that it was going to be a little -- "the washington post" interviewed some previous moderators of these debates, and they said mike pence and tim kaine are basically the same person. the politics are different, but if you look at their political careers and their style, they are very similar. they are known as being quite nice. last week's presidential debate between donald trump and hillary clinton was a study in contrast, but this article says you would doubleiven for seeing when looking at these vice presidential candidates. one person was very excited about the debate, and that is the u.s. republican candidate, donald trump. he live tweeted during the whole debate, definitely rooting for his horse, mike pence. --mainly retreated re-tweeted supporters are you can get a summary of his twitter storm. this is one tweet in particular that is getting a lot of attention. he retweeted this tweet, that
