incumbent leader, and ethnic chinese christian and a former education minister who, like 85% of jakarta's residence, is muslim. unofficial results say the muslim challenger now has a double-digit lead. jack houston in jakarta gives us the latest. >> it is looking like 58% have voted for the muslim candidate in this race. effectively, it is all -- it his political star has finally sunk. this is at odds with what was predicted by the polls. it has been a very bad 12 months for polling. this is no exception. we thought it was going to be very close but it was a double-digit victory. what happenedfrom in the first round, there were two muslim candidates but all of muslimoted between the

venezuela's bracing for what is called the mother of all protests. it is being staged today by opponents of the president nicolas maduro and his move to tighten his grip on power. venezuela has already been rocked by two weeks of violent protest that have left five dead so far. maduro has said the u.s. is behind the movement to oust him. he has also said the speaker of the country's opposition should be investigated to instigate a two. here's what she had to say. >> the repression needs to stop. the armed forces must left maduro's government no that the in his best the situation in venezuela is unsustainable. genie: we've got armen georgian has been following that in venezuela. previous protests over the past few weeks have turned violent. there is a risk of violence today and yet the opposition seems to be going into this mother of all protest almost

upbeat. >> they've been galvanized by two recent events. first, the supreme court ruling on march the 30th who tried to strip the country's parliament of its powers. the court partly reversed its move. secondly on april the seventh authorities banned oppositions from running for office for 15 years. faced with these increasingly harsh measures, opponents seem to be putting their differences to one side and pushing together to get him out. genie: how much pressure is the president under right now? >> earlier this week he ordered pro-government militias to be expanded to about half a million members, each with a rifle. presumably the consolation behind that was that if members of the police and army started to defect then he would still have a hard core of armed supporters.

as for his ruling socialist party there are tensions between ideologues and pragmatists. that is something the opposition could exploit if it were willing to negotiate some kind of transitional arrangement for maduro. that could create an atmosphere for defections. but at the moment if there is no prospect of a deal than senior members of the ruling socialists have an incentive to switch. genie: in the region it seems like things are shifting but not in the president's favor. usinguro has been rhetoric similar to that of his mentor, the late hugo chavez about foreign powers, specifically the u.s., meddling in venezuela. let's listen. america,ited states of the state department, has given the approval and the go-ahead for a coup to intervene in venezuela. this is what i am saying and this is what i shall say.
