category four hurricane.e. it is the strongest ticket the united states this year, and in fact the strongest ever to hit the panhandle region. the last time they had a major hurricane was 13 years ago. to top that, the national has said in its latest update that the storm contitinues to gain intensity, which means that by the time it makes landfall, it could get even stronger. it is supposed to make landfall sometime this afternoon local time. it is already 120 miles away from the coast. but apart from the kind of damage that the wind speeds can cause, which are over 140 miles at this point, there is also the damage that comes through different types of flooding. so there is the rain that the storm will bring em, which will better the panhandle at least until friday morning. in some areas, we expect the rain to bring in water up to 12
5:33 am
inches, causing life-threatening flash floods. or dangerous than that is the storm surge this hurricane will bring even before it makes landfafall. they are expecting almost 30 feet of water to come inland from the shore. is very fast, very intense flooding. when it comes inland, if people have not already left, it is very hard at that point to evacuate. apart from the immediate devastation that this sort of high-intensity storm causes, recuperation. people are left without basic infrastructure, electricity, sometimes even access to water and food -- fresh water and food is difficult. and it can be weeks before people are back to the way things used to be, as we just saw less than a month ago in both the carolina states, which were hit by hurricane florence. delano: hundreds of thousands of people have been told to
5:34 am
evacuate and go to areas inland. are they listening? so, as i was saying to you, panhandle region has not had a major hurricane warning in a very long time. at the officials actually said yesterday evening that they were very happy with the response. the governor put over 100 counties on an emergency watch, which means that mandatory evacuations had to take twice, and many people responded. mandatory is misleading. the government cannot force you to leave. he spoke to some people who left areas around panama city. they had drove in farther up inland, , to family, were they could be safer, as early as yeyeerday mororning, when i it s still a category two. we also spoke to people just last night who had not left these regions, continue to stay there and wanted to ride out the storm. but again, this is when it was
5:35 am
still a category two, category three, now category four. it is getting more intense. the time to evacuate is running short. the governor continues to give warnings, even this morning, even 15 minutes ago. he has been asking people to leave and get out while they still can, because once the eye ofof the storm makes landfall, even though there are over 2500 national guard deployed for reaching people in emergency situations, it becomes much harder when there is a storm, and winds coming at you at that kind of speed. delano: indeed, thank you for the update's. -- for the update. our reporter is in miami. the italy's a palace has announced that unexpected cabinet reshuffle -- the elysee palace is announced that an expected cabinet reshuffle
