3:05 pm
she went on a listening tour which was meant to feed into a new party program. she was secretary-general of the party. she will now be right at the top of the party. that means she can show that she can moderate and integrate the potential rift that we see here that could unfold with those disappointed supporters of matz who were much more neoliberal. that will be her first task, to make sure there is not much of that quarreling going on. that could potentially threaten the party. one of the last remaining big tent parties here in germany. laila: before kramp-karrenbauer was elected, merkel gave her

farewell speech. let's listen to what she had to say. >> it is not that i am parting ways with the cdu. i do not have to be party chair to have strong t ties with thihs party. and i am still german chancellor. the cdu will be focusing on the time after me. it is a matter close to my heart that i contribute to ensuring the new successes of the p party while at the samame time maintaining responsibility in the government. this is so we can set the course for the future. laila: it is unusual in the to her career. she is at the top of the government but not her party. michaela: she also pretty much explained why she took this decision. and she called on everybody and

responsibility to ask themselves what they can do to ensure there is cohesion in society. rather lofty words. clearly she recognized that her also being the leader of the party stood in the way of social cohesion. she did not want more tension within her own party. she is a chancellor her almost feels liberated, who has a weight off of her shoulders, who can now focus on governing the country. she knows that this process that is now taking place in the party is no longer really hers to govern, to rein in, to control. having said that, if there is a textbook chapter to be written about how to choreograph your exits from politics, angela merkel is certainly working on that. so far it is going by her personal plan. she chose the time to step down

as party leader. and she is now saying the woman that she wanted to see in that role in the future as her successor. laila: also somebody expected to wait patiently in the wings. i wonder, did the party not have the stomach for change? michaela: they did not have the stomach for radical change. the hope here is that this will be gradual change. that kramp-karrenbauer, who was the premier of the smallest state, and interior minister, she did take tough action. there was quarreling over the age of migrants who say they are minors. she took action. she is a lot tougher in her approach. and she is tougher talking on russia.
3:09 pm
this is something that merkel will have to take into account. it is a gradual change to a more conservative position. she was against same-sex marriage, something where merkel freed the way. clearly the party did not have the stomach for radical change, which will -- would have meant matz. laila: how difficult will it be for merkel's successor to chart her own path and not be overshadowed by merkel's towering legacy? michaela: that is the challenge right now. akk, as she is known, said it herself. she mentions of the label of a many merkel -- mini-merkel that is out there. she will have to take positions on things she has never taken positions on.
