3:12 pm
said is out of control. is it? >> we hahave seen a veryry terre act of crime. the whole country is shocked. i don't think it is out of control. we are having our police agencies, but it is very hard to find out, to identify this person but neverththeless, we he too much right-wing persons who are willing to use violence. >> we have spoken before about this problem. there just is not enough manpower right nowow to do surveillance and check on the possible problems in the country. when are you going to change that? >> don't have to change the manpower. we are trying to get more and more policeman on the ground but we also have to change the law. five or 10 years ago, we talked about data protection butut we d
3:13 pm
not talk about the possibilities , we have to search the internet. a lot of problems occur because of social media and we have to be present there with our police. brent: yet you are not. outsiders see that germany is rich. you have a budget surplus and lots of extra cash. it is not being spent on fighting the far-right. is it a problem of appropriating money? >> our intelligence agency s spt a lot of money looking at the right-wing. some people say we have to look on the left wing as well because that is something happening to you. we tried to get more policeman in the next years. we call it packed for roll block. we are bringing more police on the ground but it is also a discussion on the society, why are people stepping in this far-right position?
3:14 pm
it are motivated by the internet, by bubbles of right-wing publishers. brent: it is a societal problem. today, we asked people here in berlin with a make of what happened. >> i am here because i don't want murderers in my country. >> grief, fear, rage. everything you would feel on a day like this. >> i am here because i feel we have to show our faces. to show the majority of people in this country are different. brent: what do you say to those people who feel like the police, the authorities, the people who should be on the right side, they feel like us who have let them down? >> first of all, the last comment was we are much more. that is the issue. one of the right-wing guys said we represent the people. no they don't. they are a small minority. they are criminals definitely

and violent. in the end, it is a small minority and we have to get them. brent: you have in parliament, the largest opposition force is the far right party. you have to do business with them because they are legally lawfully members of parliament. how do you do that knowing that ththey are sympathizers to the far-right movement? >> sometimes, they made the ground for this. i would say one third of them nationalists extremist they are the old npd in our country. you have to describe it and make that clear that their positions make and create the ground for these ideologies. we have to differentiate. there are some of them who joined this party because of the eurosceptic time and o other
3:16 pm
reasons. we have to ask them why are you in this party when one third of them is extreme? we have to separate them. brent: maybe rehabilitate some of them, bring them into the political fold if you will. is that going to be business item number one for the next chancellor of this country? it's not that far away. next year there is an election. will the next chancellor have to put fighting the far-right number one on his or her agenda? >> we have to accept the fears of the people in our country and we have to give them answers to their questions. you can't say no, we don't think about this. we have to take care of thehem d their fears but on the othth hand, we have to make quite clear that violence, extremism is not an answer. brent: we heard today from some
3:17 pm
people blaming angela merkel and her open-door policy in 2015 when one million migrants refugees were led into the country. what do you say to that when they say this is all because of what the politicians did five years ago? >> that is definitely not the reason. these people try to weaken the government and focuses on angela merkel. the issue is bringing down the democracy and the system of the government to install a new government. i think there is a real danger of these groups trying to get the power. i would say there is a beer and we need to look closely into the ideology. it -- there is a fear and we have to look into the ideology. brent: in what has been
3:18 pm
described as a surprise move, donald trump has appointed richard grenell to be the acting intelligence chief in charge of the u.s. spy agencies. the move has been criticized because he has no experience whatsoever in intelligence. donald trump took to social media today and he wrote that richard grenell had done exceedingly well in representing the u.s. abroad and he looks forward to working with him. let's go now to washington. my colleague is on the story. good evening to you. what has been the reaction so far to this surprise appointment? >> you said it there. there has been plenty of surprise and shock. the appointment has been made of the ambassador. the reason for this is down to his apparent lack of relevant experience. we heard frorom senator mark
3:19 pm
warner on the senate intelligence committee. he is saying that the prpresidet has seselected a person who does not have enough intelligence experience. this has been reiterated by many critics particularly within the democrats. also, they have said he has been handed this position guess he is a staunch trump loyalist and he has been very vocal for his conservative views. for that reason, it is not a good appointment because he is not going to be neutral in his new position as -- the white house has come out saying that richard grenell will take a nonpartisan approach. brent: we also understand that richard grenell is going to be the acting head of national intelligence. does that mean he is going to be there temporarily or is this a permanent move? >> in fact, he even said it
3:20 pm
himself. he tweeted earlier saying he was the acting intelligence director and the president trump would announce the nominee for the job soon. essentially, it was not richard grgrenell. it has also been reported that republicans wanted to nominate someone who had experience as a national security professional. richard grenell is basically going to be holding onto his job as the ambassador and also he will be acting as the intelligence director. brent: we noted that the u.s. president, he has a history of naming someone to a position, the media reports and then he changes his mind. is there talk that this is another example of that? >> in many respects, what he tweeted confirms that this is going to be a temporary position. like you said before, president
3:21 pm
trump has been known to change his mind. for the time being, it looks like richard grenell will be taking this job. it is effective essentially immediately then we will see what exactly he means by the fact that the president will be announcing who will be taking the job permanently. brent: thank you. the berlin film festival is underway. it is the festivals 70th year. the opening film is -- it stars sigourney weaver from alien. we understand it is anything but science fiction.. >> hugh discovered that people, i don't know who these people are, people have been publishing salinger stories on their persononal weblogs.
3:22 pm
this is blatant copyright infringement and we are going to have to scour the world wide web to put an end to it. brent: sigourney weaver has come along way since alien. my guests are coming to us from the red carpet. you have seen the opening film, my salinger year. how was it? >> the premier is underway as we speak. we had an opportunity to see it in the press screening this afternoon. it is something like the devil wears product through a literary prison. it tells the story of a young aspiring poet who heads to new york with literary dreams. when she gets toto the big appl, she understands her work is
3:23 pm
anything as glamorous as what she thinks. >> sigourney weaver puts her to work answering letters addressed to jd salinger who is her clieient. the reclusive author does not want fan mail so this character is responsible for basically writing to these poor souls who identify with holden caulfield saying we are not going to respond to you and we will not forward your mail either. but along the way, she starts to connect to their letters and feel that maybe they deserve a better response than that. >> on the whole, i think it's fair to say it is a love letter to a bygone era in new york. brent: you guys are spot on with the comparison about the devil wears product. it looks exactly like that film. the jury was presented today with sinema royalty.
3:24 pm
who is in charge? >> jeremy irons, the british actor is presiding over the jury. they will watch the films in competition and select the winner for the coveted golden bear award. he is a great actor, a big name. a bit of an odd pick since it is a very political festival and he is an older white guy who said some off-color things about women, gay marriage. >> he tried to set the record straight on the press conference this morning almost delivering a shakespearean soliloquy for which he was famous. he tried to set the record straight on those issues. >> i support wholeheartedly the global movement to address the inequality of women's rights. and to protect them from abusive damaging and disrespectful harassment.
3:25 pm
i applauded legislation of same-sex marriage wherever it has been obtained. i support wholeheartedly the right of women to haveve an abortion should they so decide. brent: that was jeremy irons telling us what he wants us to know about him. there are other characters connected to the film festival who are providing lots of talk and kindling for scandal. >> this is the 70th edition of the film festival. it started in postwar berlin under the american military authority and the first director of the festival in recent weeks it turns out was more connected to the not sees them we previously knew. >> there was a prize that was connected to his name. in light of this, that prize has
