thank you for joining us. what explains the heavy declines we have been seeing? craig: there are a few factors. one, the simple factor is this is now spreading fast and wide, and we do not know how bad it is going to get. it is inevitably going to cause disruptions, which is going to take economic consequences and a big consequences to certain sectors and companies. we have already said for example, sporting events and other events in italy being canceled and we are likely to see that now if we see a similar spread in other countries. and they are not causes of basic, economic consequence. under is purely complacency, but the coronavirus has been spreading now for more than a month, but when it appeared to be contained within china, that was an offer for investors to buy, and send it back to record high levels. and there is this complacency that it could not possibly spread outside of china, and

buyingre, the continued was justified. that was never justifified becae once we see accelerating cases in some of the countries like iran, and once we see cases popping up all over the place, the panic sets in, and it has because of the levels. now we are at the worst weekk since ththe global financialal crisis, and there is no indication at this moment in time that things will get better. >> that is what i was going to ask next, do we have any sense of when these losses might actually come to an end? >> the difficulty with this is it is purely headline driven,. and will potentially take some of the heat out of the clients eclines, andout of d we may see less extreme declines on a day by day basis, but ultimately that will depend on the news. everything is news driven. if we continue to see
5:55 am
acceleration, say we see more cases in france, germany, and we see signs that it spreading across parts of europe, we will see more days like we have seen over the course of this week. similarly if we see cases like that in the u.s. as well and it continues to move across the world. we are likely to see more cases like today. any sign of stabilization or containment, or de-escalation in these countries that have been particularly sensitive so far, we will start to see bounces in the market, and we will see the bargain hunters coming in, but i think this could be gradual because my fear right now as we will not see signs of deceleration, but only signs of acceleration, and that will continue to pressurize markets. seenst question, we have chinese authorities especially proactive with stimulus measures to try to boost the economy. should we expect other governments to follow suit? >> absolutely. we have seen hong kong to do the same, and singapore.

this is not traditional efforts banks, and this is not for politicians to look at central banks and cut rates. that will not use the funding pressure for small and medium-sized business measures. and whether they are deciding to spend or save, so we need to seek support from small and medium-size businesses. governments need to instill confidence and consumers that this will not lead to a recession, otherwise, it will become more self filling. >> craig erlam, thank you for the insights. turning now toaoa story' and frfrance where a countrys angle to a storyng now inin frae e were a country's annual agricultural conference. they're not enough nenew recrui. >> between them, they have all made the same conclusion -- they
