joined by the dw reporter. why is tiktok pulling out of hong kong? >> they are doing it in light of recent evidence. very vague statements. it leaves a lot of things unanswered. are they doing this because beijing is telling them to do so? is this a heroic move to show that they care about freedom of expression in hong kong? the parent company says they don't take any orders from beijing. nor do they share any data with beijing. there have been cases where they have censored content or taken down content. brent: the u.s. tech giants now reassessing their positions on hong kong. they face restrictions or bans in mainland, china.

>> you could look at this new security law as the beginning of the great firewall of china. also covering hong kong. under this law, social media platforms and individuals can be fined over 10,000 euros or they can be put in jail for up to a year for content that is critical of the government. the social media companies really have to reassess if they comply with these laws. the laws are very vague. brent: what about tiktok? it says it will pull out of hong kong. you have to remember that it is a chinese company. it is owned by a company in beijing. >> you can say that tiktok has become a proxy or symbol of the rising influence of china in the world. it was banned in india over a border conflict between those
