fighting reignited on sunday over a decades-old conflict involving a disputed territory. over 130 people have died. u.s. president donald trump, russian president vladimir putin, and french president emmanuel macron issued a joint statement on thursday. it condemns the recent escalation of violence and urged the two former soviet republics to resume good faith negotiations without pre-conditions. the three countries have previously served as mediators in the decades old dispute over the region, an ethnic armenian enclave in azerbaijan. recep erdogan is clear, saying it is unacceptable the countries are involved in a search for a cease fire, given that they've neglected this problem for nearly 30 year. people in hong kong staged protests against beijing and the

hong kong government on thursday, the 71st anniversary of the founding of the people's republic of china. police say more than 80 people were arrested. responding to calls by a pro-democracy group, people gathered in central parts of hong kong island. they called for independence and freedom for hong kong. the national security law was imposed on june 30th. since then, the number of major rallies have dwindled. but public frustration against the governments of china and hong kong remains unabated. >> we demand the chinese communist government to end their one-party dictatorship, to give the power back to the chinese people. >> authorities deployed some 6,000 people. they patrolled the route of a banned antigovernment march, preventing crowds from gathering. earlier in the day, the hong kong government hosted a ceremony to commemorate the anniversary. >> translator: hong kong has

earlier my colleague spokeke wi a professor, an expert in u.s. politics at soef tia university for more insight into how the debate shapes things going forward. >> well, u.s. media and the public as well is seeing this debate as the worst presidential debate in history. do you think there was a winner? >> i think as you mentioned, you know, the debate was very unusual, unconventional, so it is difficult to tell which side won at the time. president trump and vice president biden tried to energize their bases but they couldn't extend -- they couldn't reach to the undecided voters as a result of the first debate. >> what about foreign policy? it wasn't of course on the agenda this time, although there

was some mention of china and president xi jinping. do you think the two candidates will approach u.s./china relations in certain ways in the coming debates. >> i think, you know, the third debate, one of the major issues would be china and foreign policy. one of the things, vice president biden suggested several changes in the course of the china/u.s. foreign policy if he's elected. there's two points, first one is he may try to rethink the high tariff. the second is the environment. the trump organization has, versus china, but if biden wins, one of the major issues between china and the united states would be environment, especially on co2 gases.

>> let's look at the schedule. trump and biden will debate again october 15th and the 22nd. do you see any surprises coming up? >> we willll see, i should say. the race will be decided by the undecided voters, especially in the battleground states. they have to folk cut on the battleground states that are undecided voters. it's difficult to send a message to them. so maybe debate is not a quorum to cement their voters, but they have to go on so-called ground games, they have to visit, their camps may visit supporters and try to persuade them to vote for their own candidates. that would be the key.

aomori frequent. the group was started after this man h heard about single parent who couldn't afford to feed their children. >> translator: when i researched the number of children's cafeterias in aomori frequent, e learnedd we had the secondnd-lot rate out of any prefecture in the region. when i discovered children had this need, i decided to find the way to solve the problem. >> reporter: at first he set up cafeterias using community centers and city office. he soon came across a problem. he learned that some children couldn't make it to their location. that's when he came up with the idea of going mobile. using crowd funding, he raised enough money to rent a used bus. he built the kitchen himself. it's not just his handyman skills that have proved useful.

mongolia bringing accumulating snow. the cold air could affect northern japan next week. our meteorologist sayaka morii joinins us now with the details. >> hello there. chilly air is covering parts of mongolia bringing significant snowfall. areas in the southwest experienced about 27 centimeters of snow as of thursday morning, and the pressure gradient is pretty tight over the eastern side of the nation. blowing snow is occurring. cold air will continue to affect the area at least into the weekend. the air will move into northern japan as we go into next week. so it looks like hokkaido might see mountain snow because of the cold air. before the arrival of the chilly air, warm air will surge in from the south. so many areas of japan could see warmer-than-average conditions into the weekend. tokyo could see a high of 27 on sunday. that's about three degrees higher than average for this

forest firires continue to burn central argentina. the blazes have been on going for the past ten days. high temperatures reaching 37 degrees celsius along with shifting winds have been blamed for the situation. close to 16,000 hectares have been burned in the province. we need rain and cooler temperatures, but it looks like no significant rain is in sight at least into the weekend in places like southern areas of brazil, argentina and paraguay. the western united states will see high temperatures on your thursday. that's it for me. stay safe. ♪

non-manufacturers improved gaining five points to minus 12. the tankan also covers the views of executives. the index for all industries. including the service sector showed no improvement from the previous survey. the tankan indicates that employment still has a long way to go before it returns to the prepandemic situation. for many workers, these gliers of hope are too little too late. an oecd graph illustrates devastating job losses worldwide. it shows just how far working hours in major industrial countries have fallen during the covid-19 pandemic. the rate of decline in the third month was much worse than during the 2008 financial crisis. this grim situation is forcing employers and other organizations in japan to think evermore creatively to survive.
