three debt. a statement has come about in the past hour saying the attacks were carried out by confused and manipulated young people, suggesting the attackers were ugann. 81 people have been arrested in the past six weeks and seven suspects killed whileesisting arrest. it is all in the context of several other attacks which have happened in the past six weeks, and while today's attacks were quite spectacular, very coordinated in the central district outside the central police station and on paiamentary avenue, the suicide bombs three nutes

apart, but there have been small attacks in uganda over the past six weeks. october 8, october 23, and a few weeks later, a third device on a bus in which only the alleged bomber was killed, but today's attackwere much more spectacular, much better coordinated, and much more planned. it seems that this is really part of a pattern and both the president and security forces are claiming that today's attacks were [inaudible] mark: there are reports of a domestic terror group linked to the allied democratic forces. who, what are the adf?
3:36 pm
>> it is kvitova shadowy group, quite well known in the region. really -- it is a shadowy group, quite well known in the region. they were originally formed to overthrow the ugandan government and were originally a ugandan group, but since 2013, they have been carrying out some really vicious attacks. in 2019, a radical offshoot of the original allied democratic forces claimed allegiance to the islamic state group. in march this year, the u.s. state department called them a foreign terrorist organization, and since then, there have been

attacks since the start of october. theshave been mnly me bombs, improvised devices, small ied's whichave gone o in rious are on e outskirts of the city. today, these attacks happened i strategic areas downtown where there are government buildings, a lot of people coming and going. these attacks seem to be much more coordinated than the previous attacks, so it seems to be a real change in the modus operandi of the group and a coordinated attack, which has not happened in the past with this group. mark: thank you for that update, and please keep us up-to-date with developments as they

3:39 pm
i don't think this looks like freedom. we bought this tent, and police come here, they cut it up and throw it away. now we have to sleep outside. it was raining today. it is cold. mark: a migrant voice their. police have burnt down the camp and dismantled, it seems, all the belongings of the unfortunate people there. a representative from the group utopia 56 joins us. what is your opinion of what has happened today? >> our opinion is that it is a very sad situation. first, y have tknow that this eviction is completely illegal. no people have an informed of anything. people have been forced to go inside the bus, given no
3:40 pm
information about where to go. you have people that have made 400 to 500 kilometers. you have people all over france and then their belongings have then destroyed. they had no information at all, not to mention that this morning, more than 300 policemen came in the camp, and you had the equivalent of four or five workers that did not even go inside to explain to people what would happen. it is a complete disaster. you have to imagine that we receive a lot of calls from people, they have no idewhere they are, they have -- they do not ev understand why they are there or what happened this morning. we try to break through and explain to them what happened and try to bring the truth.
3:41 pm
mark: can i cut you off their? on that line you're developing, the french congressional report jamming france overt handling of the crisis. there has been reporting in recent months about changing and being more hume. this seems to fly in the face of that, doesn't it? >> it does. it is the difference you have between the reality and the speech. if you look at the situation in france, there is a clear mistreatment of the people, clear. we have so many examples that just show how the sta is actually trying to build this environment to send a message. we are very happy about this

commission being brought to the public, even if we know that for that person that has been working on it, he received a lot of blaming about the wordse used, and while we could not expect this commission to do such a great job to look at actual reality and the fact, today, it is still difficult for the general public to accept it. mark: we've had this congressional report that promises to do better, but in light of the congressional report, is it fair to say that nothing has been learned from previous errors and mistakes in handling migrants? >> if you look at the situation, there is less people at the border, but what actually happens is there is more and more and more people crossing, so when we try to put things on
3:43 pm
the smuggler and say everything is because of the smuggler, the smuggler has never been working more than this year. you have less people at the moment at the border but way more people actually crossing and going through those conditions. it just depends what you call the right strategy. the state looks like it tries to redu the number of people on our ground, or to actually bring up the human rights and take care of the people where they are. mark: director of utopia 56 speaking out on behalf of the migrants. thank you very much indeed for joining us here on france 24. we appreciate your time. we will be looking for further developments on the story going forward. cease fire reported in the latest flareup between armenia and azerbaijan, following armenia reporting deaths and lots of positions in border

3:45 pm
>> tensions boil over at this border crossing. polish police fire water cannon at a group of migrants they say through objects from the belarusian side, severely injuring an officer. it is one example of the mounting pressure after weeks of thousands of at the -- thousands of asylum-seekers being stranded in limbo. the belarusian president said he spoke to angela merkel about reducing the strain. >> we came to an agreement that escalation is not in the intere of eithe the european union or belarus. we cannot allow an escalation to happen, even though some may wish for it to happen. >> most of the migrants arrived in belarus from the middle east, many taking planes to minsk -- to minsk after being granted visas. migrants were taken to the borders and told they cannot go back to the belarusian capital. >> me and all my friends.
3:46 pm
>> the eu says belarus is weaponizing migrants in revenge for sanctions. president lukashenko denies this, but i former belarusian diplomat told france 24 this is >> ok, if you impose sanctionsd. on me, then i will impose a blind eye on the border. >> seems like this do not reflect well on the eu, but as winter approhes, the polish government says is it's preparing for the crisis to stretch on for months. -- says it is preparing for the crisis to stretch on for months. mark: as we speak, a reminder some 4000 are bedding down for the night in what are set to be subzero temperatures. just consider that as other people consider the diplomatic elements of the story. time now to turn our eye to business.

business means one person -- kate moody. good evening to you. great to see you. germany suspended the certification process of a controversial gas pipeline. >> it is the controversial nord stream 2 pipeline. it is facing a legal hurdle, but it is eight political and financial hot potato. russia already provides more than 1/3 of europe's natural gas. nord stream 2 would have doubled its assets at a time when consumers are facing increased energy prices. >> it is a gigantic project with even larger energy implications. >> i believe this is a weapon. i believe it is wrong not to see
3:48 pm
that this is a dangerous weapon. >> the 1230-kilometer-long nord stream 2 was completed in september and would transport natural gas from russia to germany under the baltic sea, bypassinukraine. that would dl a devastating blow. ukraine pumps between 80 billion to 90 billion cubic meters of russian gas to european markets each year, earning $2 billion in transit fees. the transport of natural gas has long been a source of dispute between the two countries. following russia's annexation of crimea, ukraine halted transit of gas from its neighbor. ukraine fears it could be used by vladimir putin to undermine
3:49 pm
ukrainian stability. >> increases the chance of full-scale war between russia and the ukraine. >> the u.s. and poland oppose the pipeline. >> the announcement sparked another jump in natural gas prices today. the european benchmark rose over 14%, tapping 91 euros per megawatt hour. at the start of the year, it was trading close to 17 euros. analysts are increasingly worried that european gas supplies could run short and lead to rolling blackouts this winter. let's take a look at the rest of the day's trading action. mixed close. ftse 100 closing slightly in the red. slight dance in paris and

losing money because of covid restrictions, including the requirement to check customers' health passes. they are asking the government to support them with tax breaks and rent subsidies. some business associations say they support efforts to curb the spread of covid-19, but they do come at a cost. >> [speaking foreign language] >> and that is all the business news for now. mark: pleasure to see you, as always. now, to truth or not to truth, that is the question. james with the answer in truth or fake. first up this evening, claims be rounded up>> it is not trut.
3:52 pm
i have given the whole game away now. what does truth mean? i can't remember. this is the french page four " the observers" in french. there is a video that was doing the rounds. 150,000 views on one link alone. let's just take a look at what they are saying. this is absolutely appalling. electrified facilities built in queensland, australia, to hold the unvaccinated. >> you think these are just for people who are sick? look at this. it is double fenced.
3:53 pm
double. they are not mucking around. >> there you go, the claim that this was to do with those who have not been vaccinated against covid-19. a comment on that particular video was pretty sharp, i think it is fair to say, and more and more people, i think, do have this instinct to not trust everything they see on social media. this is someone saying they're a skeptic when it comes to content like this online, and guess what? he was right to be skeptical because that is not what claimed to be in the video. if you look at some of the work that was done by that team, in the video it was claimed that this was in australia, so if you do some searching on google earth and whatnot, you can identify that there are a number of facilities in queensland, in brisbane, the capital, and do street view, you can match the images from the video to
3:54 pm
facilities. the facility in question, there was a tender issued first in 2017, so well prior to the pandemic, and it is near brisbane airport, and it is a detention center for the processing of immigration, nothing at all to do with the pandemic. there you go, it is the kind of scaremongering we witness more and more of. and there is always the contextual factor of a real toughening of measures -- this is austria, for example, where we have seen that unvaccinated people are being requested to say home. also australians have been on the tougher end of things. in the context of criticism of australia's approach to things, that kind of claim could be credible when normally, it would seem utterly preposterous.
3:55 pm
with headlines like that, people would be more likely to believe stories, tall tales such as this, so it had nothing to do. mark: if you saw the detention center, it just seemed bogus from the start. >> and if the person in the video believes this themselves is another question. what's her motivation? why did you do this? mark: let's carry on to the next story. a lot of attention in dance -- in france over reported ufo sightings. >> the story was picked up but i suppose the main private channel here in france.
3:56 pm
the connection, ufo spotted repeatedly in the skies over southern france. the reason why it was credible, the local weather service has compiled video of the different sightings. you would think that are probably pretty clued in with what is happening around the ies and so on. in any case, what hapned was this particular group of people, the guy in th center, he is a well-known hoax there here in france, and this gentleman is behind the weather service. they joined forces to hoodwink media, left, right, and center, across the country. if i could just show you the video in question so you can see here, ight? this is the local weather channel, and the video showed -- spooky music, etc.
3:57 pm
all of this, because it was published on the local service seemed quite credible. mark: deliberately using "the x-files" fame seems a queue that this is not real. >> you would think. but there were various media picking up on this. anyway, it gave them the opportunity to say, what with the fact checkers doing about this? mark: poking fun at the fact checkers. they have a very nice cow. you cannot disagree with cattle. james, thank you very much indeed. straight down the line, good stuff. great to see you. thanks to you for watching, too. stay with us. more to come "live from paris."
