have become commonplace around the country as russian forces bear down on eastern ukraine, they are keeping up with attacks elsewhere in an apparent effort to weaken ukraine's ability to defend itself. >> i call on all those who live under unending bombardment. the russian defense ministry says it struck more than 300 targets overnight across the country and downed ukrainian fighter jets. monday, the governor said the strikes that killed and wounded several people. this is a bump -- a barbaric attack on a civilian target. people came to work in the morning.

domestic policy. i asked her what this latest offensive means in terms of russia's tactics. >> it depends on whether u mean the offensive in terms of the donbass. there has been escalations of schelling. there is the regrouping of the russians in donbas in preparation for the attack that is said to be imminent. the latest report is the russians have around 76 battalion groups stationed in the area. the expectation is that the attack will come shortly. for the russians, that is the last military chance if they lose the battle.

that is why the russians will try to focus on this military operation in order to try to get as much out of it as they possibly can. >> we have to consider the fall of mariupol to russia. that would be a huge loss to ukraine. what would this mean for the defense and security calculus in kyiv? >> in reality i think we have been expecng the fall of mariupol for a while now. it was a question of when, not if. this is all about whether the ukrainians were able to support their fighters. over the next few days, this will effectively fall. in terms of what it means, it

will be seen as a victory for the russian side. it is important symbolically because it cuts off the ukrainian control. this is the anti-nazi crusade that president putin has been going on. it would allow the russians to reinforce their campaign by moving the troops in marpol eastward. i don't think that the fall will come as any surprise and tactically and strategically, they would have been planning for that. they would have calculated this into some strategic planning. >> beyond the battlefield, the eu commission chief said in the past few days that it is just a matter of time before russia goes bankrupt. i am wondering if russia is now

running against the clock here. running against these economic sanctions while ukraine finds itself rushing to keep itself armed so it can continue fighting, are those the background battles that have emerged in this conflict? >> to some extent, yes but i think we have to keep in mind that what we have on the battlefield is ukrainians having the manpower, needing more firepower. the major problem is the lack of manpower. even if we hear the stories, the difficulties in creating new equipment -- it is a question of if they have sufficient manpower soldiers to be able to fight it. in the long run, sanctions have very negative fallbacks in terms ofussia's capacity to rebuild

themselves militarily. the russian military would be much weakened by sanctions. >> russia is starting this new offensive against ukraine. at the same time it is licking its wounds. something the kremlin did not. images have now emerged, appearing to show this ship on fire. this missile cruiser counts as the biggest russian warship lost in action since world war ii.

volodymyr zelensky is hoping for rapid progressn joining the european union. zelensky submitted a complete membership document to the eu representative today. ukraine was to be branded candidate status at the eu summit this coming june. this is one of the most important centers of the jewish faith in europe at the southern part of ukraine. life has changed radically since the war broke out. ukrainian officials say it has been the target of russian rocket attacks. schultz visited the jewish community to see how they are coping with the russian invasion. >> the sagogue can hold hundreds of worshipers. since the start of the work,
