a commissioner with the u.s. agency in charge of telecoms says, american tech giants should remove tiktok from their app stores. he called the popular social media app a national security risk. commissioner brandon carr posted the letter on twitter addressed to the ceos of apple and google. he said the app is collecting sensitive data about u.s. citizens and warned that the chinese government has unchecked access to it. carr said tiktok's beijing-based owner company is required by law to comply with china's surveillance demands.

u.s. media reported earlier this month that tiktok in china fruently access users' data. the operator tried to calm the outcry by saying data would be transferred to servers owned by u.s. software giant oracle. carr says if apple and google do not remove the app, he wants an explanation by friday next week. but the s.e.c. has no power to regulate app stores. invitations to join nato.
