seen in other situations. we thought it in the united states in 2020 with trump. the issue is that the supporters of right wing -- obnoxious candidates don't like to respond to surveys. they do not trust pollsters and they are often off the grid. consequently, pollsters in brazil did not build into their models the need to take this into accnt. consequently, leading to just a few days ago, bolsonaro was behind by 15%. severely undercounted. as a result, it built up expectation of a first round lula victory which was unrealistic. >> i am wondering whether something like megastar footballer name are coming out and saying he supported bolsonaro made a difference. >> i do think there were these uncertainties, if you will. that pollsters can't predict but probably should have understood

decisions of voters. in the for one, bolsonaro in the lead up to the elections, announced a cash giveaway program that was going to benefit 22 million families. clearly that was an effort to buy votes. other endorsements, such as the fake news that bolsonaro and his supporters engage in, certainly helped. again, this should be an obligation of pollsters to understand and predict. >> does lula have the support to carry this through and to win? he is in the lead, let's not forget. >> he is in the lead by only 5%, according to the first round votes sunday. he can probably win. it is probably his to lose. the two under -- other candidates account for almost --

certainly enough to get him over the finish line. if they swing behind lula come and play probably well, that it is his to lose for the problem is that bolsonaro has been ceding doubts about the integrity of the electoral system. the hope is that lula would win big. it does not look like that could happen because there is a real risk of post electoral upheaval in protest directed by bolsonaro. >> that would be good for any -- that wouldn't be good for anybody, would it? >> precisely. brazil right now is confronting a severe economic problem. inflation is running about 10%. the economy, for the last eight years, has only grown by -0.1%. according to oxfam, there are 33 million people who experienced hunger in the last six months. these issues need to get

resolved. in this pitched, polarized battle and the questioning of the electoral institutions is not going to help those critical matters. >> what you have pointed out with the oxfam kind of points towards the policies that lula has been touting come of the leftist agenda. which brings us back to the beginning of our analysis. how on earth did bolsonaro managed to sustain the score he got and to stay in the race? >> it is a fundamental question. when we are asking ourselves in other political contexts. the truth ishat populists of the left and the right, irrespective of their own performance in government, managed to maintain the loyalty, fierceoyalty, of a number of supporters. his core support, his floor is around 30%. his ceiling is only about 45% or 50%. but he does have a core group of
