♪ welcome to "nhk newsline." i'm raja pradhan. we start in thailand where a man has opened fire at a child care center in the country's northeast. police say at least 32 people are dead, including children. they say the shooting happened at a facility for 3 to 5-year-olds in nong bua lamphu at around 12:30 on thursday. the gunman is among the dead. local media report he was a former police officer whose job had been terminated. now, in major league baseball, two-way sensation

ohtani took the mound for the more missiles were fired from north korea just days after a launch triggered alarms across northern japan. japan's defenseinistry says they launched two more ballistic missiles. but they believe to have landed in the sea of japan. officials think both projectiles fell outside japan's exclusive economic zone. they estimated that one flew for about 800 kilometers and it may have flown in an irregular trajectory. no damage was reported. this is the sixth north korean launch in 12 days. analysts believe the firings have allowed them to improve their capabilities. on tuesday, pyongyang raised alarm after it fired a missile over japan for the first time in five years. the ballistic missile flew a distance of 4,600 kilometers, the furthest ever for a north korean projectile.

japan's prime minister condemned the repeated launches. >> translator: i have instructed the relevant ministries to provide information to the public and ensure people's safety. this is the sixth time pyongyang has launched missiles in just a short period of time since the end of september. it is absolutely unacceptable. >> the defense minister says japan launched a protest against the north through its embassy in beijing. the launch threatens peace and stability. south korean military sources say pyongyang appears to have fired two different types of short range ballistic missiles. the news agency says military officials are looking into the possibility the first launch was a ballistic missile that north korea calls a super large rocket.

the news agency said the second missile may have been modeled after russia's iskander missile which travels at low altitude in a regular trajectory. the missiles were fired eastward outside of pyongyang. the first missile threw about 350 kilometers and the second traveled roughly 800 kilometers. south korean president yoon suk-yeol vowed to defend his country. >> translator: we will protect our people's safety based on the strong alliance with the united states and the trilateral security cooperation with the u.s. and japan. >> the launches come as a u.s. aircraft carrier was deployed to waters east of the korean peninsula. the north issued a statement before the launch condemning south korea and the u.s. it blamed the u.s. for posing what it called a serious threat to the stability of the korean peninsula. they spoke to reporters

correspondent nakajima takeo. he covered maj league baseball for more than a decade and spent six years in the united states. ohtani put up remarkable, historic numbers in 2022. can you elaborate on his historic season? >> last season ohtani proved he could be one of the best mlb players in both pitching and hitting. he became the first player in 104 years to reach double-digit wins as a pitcher and double-digit home runs since babe ruth in 1918. he finished within the top five of the leagues in most of the pitching and hitting categories such as wins, strikeouts, and home runs. >> we reported he qualified for both batting average and earned run average in the same year. how significant is this? >> yes, in mlb, a player needs a certain number of appearances to qualify for the pitching and batting titles. ohtani met that requirement in 2022. in modern baseball with the designated hitter system in both leagues in mlb, pitchers concentrate on pitching. also, a starting pitcher like ohtani will pitch every five or six days during the season, so it is difficult to maintain that routine and perform as a batter at the same time. ohtani not only pitched and hit for the entire season, but also maintained high numbers which surprised baseball fans. >> now that his record-breaking

our meteorologist jonathan oh has the outlook for here and elsewhere in our world weather report. >> hello, if you did not have a jacket with you as you went out the door, you were cold because it was a lot colder as we went through this thursday, and for those of us across the eastern areas of japan, we also had this persistent band of rain constantly rolling through the area and that's kept things dreary and cold and wet. it's not very pleasant to be outside. low temperature in tokyo on thursday was 11.6 degrees which was the lowest for the season so far. and 92.5 millimeters of rainfall in a 24 hour period. we have a stationary front along with a low pressure system lingering in the area really contributing to the pattern and what's going to add on the rainfall is more rainfall out of the west, over the korean peninsnsula.
