5:38 am
how could he manage to secure the leadership, despite the status and huge popularity of someone like him? >> there was a really interesting contest between them. they cut along well around 80%. essentially electoral college comprises of party leaders from across all the various states, and definitely he has a really brilliant track record in the legislator. nine times he's been part of the region of legislator, and he's been a minister. and after that it's been a leader of the opposition. so essentially he has a good currency amongst the huge number of party leaders. and just to add to that, this

someone who has had an impeccable track record, but is he the wide choice to heal the wounds beyond the political divide that has undermined the national congress and potentially taken a party to win the 2024 elections? >> thank you, i believe that he has signaled huge change. it has been alongside someone outside the family has become a president. is not just because someone outside is becoming the president, but he also signals change because he belongs to an oppressed community in india he also is someone who is so seeing an elder to the party that he is perfectly the candidate could have social coalitions.
5:41 am
i think congress party headed be a party that had been gripped by imagination and remained a limited -- are completely failed to counter the cultural nationalism for the bjp. we had forgotten to do so. he was only comfortable raising economic issues and economic guidance place for the congress party, but he had forgotten to bear his social coalitions and cultural coalitions. and him coming in now signals a new change because politics is about symbolism and he signals a change to a huge community outside, and this in your already commands risk inside the party, as well as outside the party, and congress, at this point in time, needs to build coalitions inside and outside, and i think he's the most suited person to do so.
5:42 am
so, i think it was a very, very good choice, and it's important. it's not just that he does not command it in india, but his constituency is very limited. it is limited to a foreign world. and he does not bring to the table the experience who came into politics at the end of the 16, has been a legislator since the early 1970's, and has risen from the bottom, from the grassroots level. in a piece that i wrote for the times of india, both of them are self-made, but the circumstances of which the two of them grew, the circumstances in which both of them got educated would represent the signal of very, very different things through audiences in india and the electorate. and also, one final point, he

congress is battle ready to face the challenges ahead, the jury is still out. there's absolutely no denying the credentials and what it is and indicates the experience and in government. but he's not an agent of change. he is more -- she will continue the straightest course. he will not bring about the kind of radical changes that are required for the congress party to take that giant leap forward. it could be much of the same. incremental changes will not lose the congress party. the agent of change would've been the choice was relevant between them. in that sense, he represents was the agent of change. he's a man of ideas. the congress party had the change of freedom, it also
5:45 am
needed a change of narrative, a change in the manner of which it functions and it works, and them afraid under him, it would be more of the same. but now that the deal is done, i think what the doctor has ordered for the congress party is the likes of them and for all the young talent which has not been allowed to be given responsibility and interested. these are a fact of life as far as the party is concerned. they won't walk away into the sunset, and now the term that he has been chosen has been elected. in the gandhi's might put their shoulder right behind him and discuss. >> you must her heard the -- targeting him from the supporters. basically they are saying, we were looking forward to see some
5:46 am
optimism. what we saw is gandhi implementing their own proxy within the party and how can you bring someone who is an octogenarian and tell the people we are looking forward to have some change? >> i still have my own personal views, but now since the elections are over, one thing i found is that this party election is not -- doesn't mean that it is a rule of laws. the idea that it is propagated is still level. what's going to happen is that somebody like him who has tremendous experience, along with the likes of people like -- and they put out --, we would hope that we have a new relationship, and i can say that over the last one year. there has been a lot of examples
5:47 am
and we strongly believe that it is more strong and open. the people that essentially believe this are those central organizations. so everyone has done this and they believe it somebody and people sugar member the fact that even though congress had lesser number of seats in 2019. people of the whole population were voting for us. so congress is different for the opposition and they come around. and i think he can do it. and just making an example of it. we have millions of party workers. all of them are walking the length of the country.
5:48 am
he is flocking the kilometers and has the most number of workers in its there along with the elections on the fresh ideas that will move to help the congress come back and save the country from misery. >> it has been led by those trying to discredit and taking over the bjp. but i want to ask this. this is a party of the national congress and a party that has been losing popularity doesn't appeal -- it doesn't appeal anymore to large sections of the party. his had its own ideological and structural problems. what you think he should do to be able to fix the problems that the party faces? what should be his top priority?
5:49 am
>> precisely to the region that you mention that the organization has been in a crisis and the reason why the congress party has been in a crisis is because it has allowed a certain kind of electable elite to be in control of the party. more fascinated by the economic ideas of the prime minister rather than having social coalitions or breaking ideas. i've been very critical of the congress party for the last five years because they have been fighting the culture with many wrong tools, and therefore, him being elected as the party symbolizes huge change. he has mentioned as an agent of change. for there is no proof that he would've brought in change. he could have been like list trust who could've demolished a party from inside because he has
5:50 am
a propensity of talking too much. and arrangements inside the party as well as outside. so, you need to signal a -- that here is somebody who is from the oppressed community and here is somebody who comes from a region that has a vast number of muslims. they decided that he speaks with an accent, and he can manage a lot of things. politics, as i said earlier, is a game of symbolism. and signals to a larger audience. there is nothing to prove that he is an agent of change. there is nothing that he has done in the last 10 years that tells us he was a greater agent of change. but this is an organizational theme.
5:51 am
money also can't wish away these things. >> ok. this is about symbolism. we do clearly understand that you and for someone like him because they pick someone who comes from an oppressed minority to tell the people that this is a party that is going to move forward, reinvent itself and accommodate those who don't have. but don't you see there's a risky move when you have someone coming from the south going to northern states. both of them contribute to something like 120 members of the parliament. >> the advantages that he's multilingual. most leaders are not very proficient from south india. it accounts for more than 120 seats. so he is fluent in english, fluent in hindi, he could speak
5:52 am
and understand hindustani. that would not be a problem. the problem is that the congress is a very old, conservative party. the resist change is not very admirable and it takes a very long time and changing. by the time they bring about changes, that moment has passed. whether he will be able to hasten the pace would be allowed to bring about those changes and that remains to be seen. but now that he has been elected , there is no other way but to move forward with him and empower him. there is no political party in india, and this includes them taking this on. it has to be a coalition of other parties. the congress parties and the other parties are shrinking. so his challenges are that he needs to control that the
5:53 am
congress starts winning election and then builds strong organization and then total reliance is, which can then take them on. >> you need to build an organization, a stronger organization for you to move forward and when the 2024 elections. but when you have a one-handed bgp with modi basically, constantly battering congress, what can he on his own do? >> before we get into that, i don't think that the director about the speakers of told is that he has been selected and elected because he represents the most oppressed section. now the fact that it's the elite, modi's assumptions are wrong. it's a member of congress --
5:54 am
parliament and he has been there in the last 15 years. it's the most oppressed placed. and he's definitely most battered at heart, but he understands his party and he's also receptive of the scenes we all want to embark on. we should not look so cold on papers. >> i have three other issues to cover with our other guests. >> ok. >> what i will say is that it is no longer what it used to be. as a soldier, the people of this country, over the last 10 years, nothing tangible has happened and there's a huge amount of fear. not only the minority parties, even economic fear, fear in the
5:55 am
minds of people. you have the national organizations coming on knocking up the doorstep. so intellectually they can stand to death. yes there is a lot. work hard, and i'm sure that we already started. it would be in the next few months. >> under similar conditions in 1986, the congress did exactly the same thing, picked someone else. and he was evicted in two years and ever since it was the matriarch, sonia gandhi taking over the political party. it could be the same scenario replicated again and again because behind-the-scenes you have the three key architects, sonja, raul and priyanka with an absolute massive stay over the
5:56 am
political establishment. >> but the circumstances are different. 1996 and 2022, the congress was already a week organization, and they cannot afford to evict him in the same manner that they did because the other reason is he is from the oppressed community and they tried to push him very hard. if the signals go out, it's going to be detrimental for the congress, the congress would be over because already, the most oppressed ballots or with the bgp in many states. and there are 200 million in the year, and hopefully a number would crossover. looking at him. so if you try to do anything with him, drastic, i think it's
5:57 am
going to backfire in congress. let me at this, he is a far more sophisticated person. he was in the 1960's when it was not so fashionable. he was trying to have the party of india that was about the region at that point of time. he was organization being center before he joined the congress. and you should know he is a staunch buddhist. he's an extremely -- man and he is a very, very sophisticated man and he is not a fan. he is someone who learned his lesson -- >> thank you. let's see whether he will be able to revitalize the national congress and take the party to 2024. really appreciate your insight. thank you.
