the chief, promising to cut censorship that could mean a return for donald trump. growing anger over drone attacks against ukraine. iranian authorities deny any involvement. ♪ brent: welcome. we begin with a violent assault on the husband of u.s. house speaker nancy pelosi. police say they saw a man beating 82-year-old paul pelosi with a hammer at the couple's house early friday in san francisco. he is now being treated at a hospital. the suspect is in police custody. authorities are investigating whether the crime was politically motivated. nancy pelosi was not at home at the time of the attack.

i asked our correspondent what else do we know about this assault. reporter: it is still scarce on details, but the police have named a suspect, 42-year-old david do puppet. he was not desibed as a nspiracy theorist, but a quick search online shows he has a website with conspiracy reads ranging from covid-19 to the united states being running i an elitist system of university to anti-semitic language on their. so that clearly points in the direction of it being politically motivated. we do not have confirmation about that or mediaeports that the man entered the building in the middle of the night. police apparently saw him do that.

we are seeing an increase in threats that have doubled since 2017 against lawmakers. more than 9000 over the past year here in the united states. that is very disconcerting. we are also seeing pulling that shows voters, between 25 and 30%, believe that violence is a legitimate means to use violence. critics say this is down to donald trump. a few say it in front of a camera. the january 6 committee is still investigating that. several individuals have already been sentenced in connection to that. it is a huge concern here.

largest shareholder, a new era began for twitter as elon musk to control. in his first post after taking over, the ceo wrote, the bird is freed. an apparent not to his wish to see fewer limits on what users can post. elon musk, who describes himself as a free speech absolutist, says he wants every free speech about on twitter. critics fear it this could allow hate speech and disinformation to spread. among the first to react to the buyout, was the government. >> we will closely watch all the possible changes to the platform in the coming months. we will draw our own conclusions.

that could lead to asking ourselves whether we want to remain present on twitter or not. reporter: cap european union officials are also watching closely. one responded to elon musk's tweet, saying in europe, the bird will fly by our. kanye west, whose account was recently suspended, is already back on the platform. elon musk said the decision to allow him back with mei before he took charge. donald trump, whose account was removed after the attack on the capitol, could also make a comeback under elon musk. twitter users have been wondering what his version of free speech will look like. he gave them a clue in another tweet made after the takeover. he said a moderation console

will be for him to decide acceptable content and no accounts will be reinstated before it makes. brent: let's take a look at some of the other stories. security forces in around have fired on antigovernment protesters. authorities try to crackdown on dissent. 31 people have died and nine others are missing after flooding in the philippines. north korea has carried out the latest of a series of ballistic missile tests. south korea's military detected the launch of two rockets. the u.s. has warned north korea that using nuclear weapons would mean the end of the regime. russia says it has completed its call up of 300,000 military reservists.

they say more than 80,000 troops have already been deployed to ukraine. the rest are still in training. vladimir putin issued the mobilization last month to increase russian forces in ukraine. the call up led to protests and it prompted tens of thousands of young men to flee the country. iranians living in ukraine demand the government stop supplying russia with attack drones. ukraine says it has shut down hundreds of iranian drones launched by moscow. tehran insists it is not provided russia with the weapons. >> the blood of ukrainians this -- is on your hands. that is the cry from ukraine as russia's drone attacks continue. >> thiss especially painful

iran that is providing these drones? >> remember, when a cruise missile explodes, it does not disappear. the wreckage is at the sight of the explosion and there are lots of pictures online showing wreckage from these drones. you can see they match the kinds of drones iran has. they have not hidden ese drones. they showcase them, they are very proud of them. it is clearly the same weapon. brent: if this is true, we have brown violating -- i ran violating the embargo. what does this tell us about russia? >> russia is hard up for munitions. ukraine is getting them from the

united states and nato, but russia does n have a good source. they can produce some domestically, but very limited. wars require a continuous stream of weapons and munitions to keep armies in the field. ukraine has it supplies from u.s. and nato. russia is scrambling to keep its army supply. brent: russia says it has completed its call up of up to 300,000 military reservists. what does that mean overall for russia's strategy in ukraine right now? are these the final call ups that russia can pull from? >> first, i doubt they have called up all 300,000. that would double the size of their army. i know they made that claim. maybe they sent out notices. it takes a lot of time to call that many reservists up.

some of them are clearly getting to the front lines. the russian intention is to beef up its forces. they have taken a lot of casualties. the strategy is not to go back on the offensive, but they will try to hang on to what they have and prevent further ukrainian advances. and extend the war into the winter. their hope is that europeans will crack under cold weather, inflation, recession, high energy prices. and then european populations will demand a cease-fire. brent: we appreciate your time tonight. thank you. >> thanks for having me. brent: sober and words today

he himself was a key architect of, that policy was close dialogue and not come from titian, that policy has built and needs to be changed. that was really what he was trying to get across. he made the leap from the war to the difficulties being faced by germans, particularly economic difficulties, the rising prices, the energy supply and threats to democracy. he had an image for all of that. he said the tailwind that germany enjoyed after the cold war was being replaced by hate wins. -- hate winds. he called on germans to be more capable of conflict, more assertive and self-controlled as well. it is a pretty stark assessment of where germany is right now. brent: we know when the german

mass protests continue to rock iran six weeks after the death of a young woman in the custody of the country's morality police, it's off the biggest challenge in years for the ruling bureaucracy. ♪ thanks very much for joining us. we begin in brazil where voters are preparing to head to the polls for round two of the presidential elections. the incumbent, bolsonaro facing off against the former president lula. he topped also narrow 48% to 43% this month but bolsonaro outperformed opinion polls and has been narrowing the gap. we go over to our correspondent tim vickery, joining us life from rio de janeiro.

what are the latest polls showing and what are the candidates doing? reporter: we have the last tv debates tonight. they have all been affairs, all hate and no light. bolsonaro need something different this time he is trailing in the polls. he can count on a late surge with his problem is as it stands there may not be enough votes left on the table for that late surge to take him ahead of lulu and sundays second round. it has been a campaign for the incumbents marked by scandals and revelations, he has been on the defensive then he would like. he and his team have spent the campaign searching the silver bullet, the moments, the issue that will be the game changer. they have not found it yet. can the former army captain find the silver bullet in tv debate? it seems plain to his base will

not be enough. bryan: in the meantime, bolsonaro has spent this campaign casting doubt on the integrity of results election system. is there real fear that he could reject or contest the results if he does lose on sunday? reporter: it's a moot point. on wednesday, it seemed that the bolsonaro camp were flirting with the idea of pushing for the elections to be postponed on serious grounds. right-wing politicians flouted the idea. bolsonaro called the meeting and found he did not have support for the idea, and backed off. it looks as though they will have to face the music on sunday. bolsonaro has paid the ground to contacts -- contest the election results, with no evidence, on the integrity of brazil's electronic voting system. we could have a third round in the courtroom, perhaps even more

he is to avoid the same problems twitter leadship has faced until now. >> research has shown tt the most active twitter users are already gravitating towards unsavory, not safe contact. and fewer restrictions can exacerbate the problem and make advertisers less likely to spend on the platform. reporter: despite internal confusion tied to fears of mass layoffs and dismantling culture. bryan: elon musk has expressed a desire of twitter to become a bastion of free speech leading to concerns that political disinformation and hate speech could run wild on the platform under his ownership. he tweeted of the company will be forming a content moderation counsel of diverse viewpoints that will weigh in. we will turn to a professor from the university of north carolina's center of information of technology and public life.

thanks for being with us. how is this deal been received in washington? what are we expecting to see from twitter under elon musk in terms of political speak in the u.s.? >> we are seeing the typical partisan reactions. those the right are welcoming his purchase and those on the le are concerned about it. i think what we really should be watching for is, does he actually make the changes to content moderation policies that he has talked about? how quickly will those be rolled out? bryan: it's not only of course what he wants or in theory would like to do he is also dealing with advertisers. he will have to turn the company around and make it profitable. we have seen him, in the past couple of days, try to mollify advertisers and tamp down some of the concerns that twitter wels -- twitter will become this wild west of anything goes.

how will he perceive that? >> if he looks at the other platforms that have taken that approach, he will see it is not a good business model for raking in advertisement dollars. it will damage the political reputation of the site as well in being a place for politics, for journalism. bryan: what about abroad -- twitter has had trouble enforcing policies in places. brazil has it to undermine after laurel -- electoral faith there. it will face a wide range. >> probably as the other platforms have been trying to deal with the same things. election disinformation is one of the greatest concerns, not just in the u.s., you brought a brazil. but other places around the world. twitter in some cases has it easier than other platforms in

that most of the information is primarily text based. we know who the problematic users are. it's the people who have tons of followers, who also have political power and who are spreading lies about elections to try to undermine the public's ability to holthem accountable. this is who content moderation policies, platforms like twitter should be looking at. it doesn't have to be scaled up to billions of users. bryan: speaking of that, this came out, musk is talking about this content moderation counsel of widely diverse viewpoints. how do you think that will fair -- fare in relation to the content moderation that twitter has in place prior to his ownership? >> i sounds like he is floati a version of facebook's oversight ard and having some other dy to try to make decisions about ese things. but the reality is there are

people inside twitter who have been working on content moderation for years, who do read the research that folks like myself and others in the academy, around the world look at. if this board is something he is serious about, it could be useful. he probably has a lot of resources internally at twitter of folks who deal with this. to the last point in his tweet where he says, there is going to be widely diverse viewpoints, i think many people who are respected scholars or thought leaders in this area would probably not agree to be on a board who includes people who hold openly white supremacist or massage and -- misogynist ideals. i don't know how that will fair going forward. bryan:. good point. professor sam matekane, think -- professor shannon mcgegor thank you so much for joining us. moscow has finished mobilizing
